Is 2001 old enough to be retro? Arguably not, but sod it - sixteen years is a long time, and the styling of the TT is dictionary-definition retro, so here we are. Let's call it nouveau-retro. The Civic has gone, and here's its replacement - the best engine choice for the Mk1 TT, I reckon. (I'm sure the 3.2 is lovely, but I just love turbos.) It's Avus Silver, which is a little more blue-y than the usual bright silver you find on these, and it's already got a few basic mods: 19" wheels, -40mm springs, Cupra R splitter, later front grille, 3.2 exhaust surround. I've got a few plans for it, one of which will be to replace the wheels - I absolutely love the design, but they're not real BBS LMs, they're replicas, and the lacquer's tatty. I don't fancy spending money to refurb fake wheels, so I'll just replace them. And I've got a few other ideas too. It's been with me for 48 hours now, so it's getting its first mod tomorrow - a Ramair induction kit. This will undoubtedly be joined by various other shiny things in due course. Thar she blows: DSC_7493 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_7488 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_7506 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_7504 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_7498 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_7489 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_7502 by dbizzle_, on Flickr

Very nice. Something quite timeless about the Mk1 TT's unlike the facelifts. 3.2 is peachy if you find a good well looked after one. I had a 2004 A3 3.2 Sport Quattro but unfortunately it was a bit of a lemon/Friday afternoon car. All I will say is cam-chain stretch. The 1.8T can be made to perform as good if not better with very little hassle and £ and considering the difference in VED between the two, the 1.8T is a no-brainer. That said if I could find another 3.2 but in good fettle I'd have another in a heart beat. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

Great purchase. I had one a little while ago, heavily modified. Air ride, induction kit, mapped to 270bhp, straight through exhaust (was very noisy!). I rarely regret selling a car, but I do regret selling that one. I think you're gonna like this a lot, I look forward to seeing progress.

I do like the Coupe, and have a hankering (but lack of ability) to stick a 150bhp PD TDI engine in one, and prod it with a remap stick.

Ianw what are the specs on those wheels? They look lovely Thanks They're 19" replicas of the original 18" RSTT rims and are finished in chrome powder coat.

Surprisingly easy... mate did an Octavia 20v turbo petrol to ARL conversion in a day, wired up and running. VW stuff is so modular. The 20v and PD share mostly everything for mounting etc

Little bit of belt-and-braces this week - it's had a service, and a new cambelt & water pump. It's also entertainingly wooshy now thanks to this thing: DSC_7515 by dbizzle_, on Flickr And the private plate is on. DSC_7508 by dbizzle_, on Flickr Next time: er... some other stuff. I'll be running monthly magazine updates on it in Fast Car too

Love these. I've got a MK2 TDi Quattro roadster and it's a blast to drive. Quite fancy some dished rims but being on 19's they're pretty pricey

This looks like a lovely purchase and spot on as it is! The combo is just right!
That Ashley certainly can deliver! As you may know I came very close to buying one when I bought my Clio instead of one. However, for my budget (£2.5k tops) I saw alot of rubbish out there with many "common" problems as well as neglected cars (i.e no oil changes, cambelts well overdue as well the suspension feeling looser than Jordan after a few glasses of bubbly!).
I did debate getting one when I sold the RST and bought the M3, but my heart ruled my head on this occasion. And then my wallet...
Yup, the TT Mk1 will remain a 'what if'.

Yeah, £2.5k can't really buy a good TT unless you get lucky. My budget here was £4k and it still has a bunch of issues I want to sort. But playing the long game, I think it's a good 'un!
So far it's put a massive silly smile on my face every time I've driven it. And that's exactly why I bought it. Mischievous little toy.

Had a visit from the thrust retardation fairy. DSC_7518 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_7527 by dbizzle_, on Flickr Packing some king-size rubbers. DSC_7522 by dbizzle_, on Flickr ...and it's also got some new rear shocks, as the old ones were a bit leaky. Plus the windows go up and down properly now. Progress!

Glad you put a cam belt on it. I had a 225 Roadster 10 years ago and the belt ( which wasn't due for a change when it went in for a service, because I specifically asked the question ) slipped and cost me £1500 to repair the damage caused. That was by an ex Audi mechanic. had it had to go in the price would have doubled.

Yeah, I didn't want to take the risk! Good timing too, as the water pump turned out to be completely knackered as well...
