Hi all,
I've been offered a free car. Which is good news. The bad news is that it's in Ireland, registered in Ireland and not insured. I need to get some temporary cover for Ireland and the UK in order to get it back over here. I've seen plenty of companies offering cover for UK-registered cars and foreign-plated cars already in the UK but can't see anything for foreign-plated cars in the abroad and in the UK. Any ideas?!
Thanks!

"can't see anything for foreign-plated cars in the abroad and in the UK". That bit. In other words, I need a foreign-plated car insured while it is still abroad as well as when it's in the UK. The latter is no problem. It's the former I'm having problems with.

can;t see why that is any different to insuring an uk car whilst it is abroad. Because the companies I've looked at will only insure a foreign-plated car if it's in the UK

thats a bit odd and curse word, best get someone irish to get it to you then. It certainly is. It's a very tidy 406 HDI estate owned by a mechanic so I'm pretty keen to find a vaguely legal way of getting it back here.

just get it delivered to the port for you in Ireland. Then you only need UK insurance.

By digging a little deeper I got my insurance company to give me cover for a day. I initially made the mistake of not telling the car was Irish-plated. They just said they wouldn't do it for a foreign-plated car. But on skimming through my insurance booklet it mentioned in the "driving other cars" bit that the car in question must be registered in the UK or Ireland. When I pointed this out they agreed that they could offer temporary cover on an Irish car. I didn't go into any more details about why they wouldn't offer the cover for any other cars in case they changed their mind!
Anyway, picked up the car on Tuesday and brought it back without any issues. Not quite as tidy as I was told and has a fair few more things wrong with it but it was totally free! And spent a total of £150 on getting it back (train fare, ferry going over, ferry coming back, temporary insurance) so even if I have to throw a couple of hundred quid at it it's still a good deal for a 406 HDI estate (have my old 406 lined up as a donor car).
