Well. Where do I start with this one?! In the aftermath/comedown period of the epicness that was RRG17 thoughts turned, once again, to campsite transportation. Feeling that 2 outings for the Atco mower was enough something else was needed. Initially I thought about doing a "Good Life" and building a trailer for my rotavator, but then my daughter (who is almost as leftfield as myself) sent me a picture through facebook, with the accompanying message "can we build this?" Said picture was this;  Now I'd seen this before and thought it was cool, but having been reminded of it I couldn't help thinking "what if.......?" So, over the next couple of days I built the car in my head. That was the easy part! A cheeky bid on ebay saw me with a shell to play with;  I already had the rear wheels as demo pieces for wheel banding. I also just happen to have kicking about a 9hp Honda GX270 engine;  What could possibly go wrong?! |

One thing apparent from the priliminary mock up was that bigger front wheels were needed. A kids bike was aquired and robbed for those!  I also wanted gears, and needed a clutch. A chance visit to the local lawnmower repair man saw me walking away with a 2 speed gearbox/clutch unit and rear axle c/w differential from some unknown garden tractor;   This is shaping up nicely! |

Now, I really want to keep this as close as I can to a classic Model T 'C cab' or Bucket/Fad style as possible. That means I need a drop tube front axle. Finding something off the shelf in this kind of scale is just not going to happen. That leaves one course of action. Make one! So, stub axle vertical links and axle end bushings;  A piece of 1" dia tube bent appropriately and steering arms, wheels spindles and tie rod made and fitted, along with drag link for the steering box;   And that's where we are as of tonight. |

Thanks for the approval guys To be fair, both my kids have a great appreciation for what we all do in this community with regards to old cars and generally dicking about with old tat. They have been brought up with it (at my end anyway) so they were either going to grow up hating it or loving it. Thankfully the latter has born true  I'll try not to bore you all with this build, and I'm hoping to keep the current momentum going. There's very little to purchase for it now, it's just making time for it! |

Well, whilst still on a roll, I made myself a pair of hairpins. Despite the fact I have no hair!!  Ok, yes. I admit it. They're not for actual hair, but for front axle location. I seem to have somehow accidentally opted for full on scale transverse spring set up, instead of the simple centre pivot I had previously envisaged;   |

And here we are again. It's update time! Not a huge one. I'm still waiting for a new sprocket to arrive along with a brake disc, which is preventing me building up the rear axle so, I thought I'd have a look at starting the chassis I'd already got some 1.2mm wall 50 x 35mm box section from a packing case we salvaged some months ago.   Looks a bit long. I need to drop the front axle underneath to gauge it better I think;   Well, I reckon the wheelbase looks about right at that so I'll chop 8" off of the rails and pop a crossmember in tomorrow. Ignore the reverse rake on the chassis, the rear will be an inch higher when the rear axle is built up properly and the front of the chassis will be an inch lower |

Do you think that motor is going to be able to get them wheels turning without burning the clutch out or is it going to be a matter of swapping sprockets until it's geared low enough?

Do you think that motor is going to be able to get them wheels turning without burning the clutch out or is it going to be a matter of swapping sprockets until it's geared low enough? According to my maths we should be looking at a top speed of around 20mph in high gear and low gear should be 12 so I reckon we should be fine. There's always the option of a different gearbox /clutch from a different application. I have a very similar gearbox on my rotovator and that drives just fine with no slipping |
