I'm with strikey! To bring it up to date, while colleagues are buying PCP cars, i am looking for and finding several 2003 to 2005 Focus from £300 to £900 that i think will pass another MOT or even 3! I just wish the Escorts i am finding doon sooth for similar money were close enough to grab! All the very best, Geoff. The focus makes a great cheap banger at the moment. I bought a facelift 2003 1.6 zetec model for £200 with 8 months mot left on it. Clean little car other than being a cat d, mint underneath, good on fuel and pretty fun to drive. I thought I had a real bargain till I saw another focus for sale with mot for £60! They seem to be really super cheap!

My dad did it throughout my childhood, always bought a car cheap and kept it on the road as long as possible with minimal maintenance, as soon as it would cost to much to repair/mot it got scrapped and another car purchased.
If it wasn't for my mrs turning her nose up and wanting something more modern as a daily I'd still be doing the same.

I did this for a bit back in my youth bought a Seat Cordoba 1.9 diesel For £100 11 Months MOT 9 Months tax one of the slowest things I have ever driven but a full tank seemed to last months completely abused it and It only ever wanted for a bit of radiator hose.

i don't do arsebook myself but my better half found my 106 on the local selling pages...its the way to find bargains but i think you have to really sit on top of it and be ready to go!
odd , all the mentions of focus'. i was only thinking to myself on the way to work at stupid oclock this morning that tidy low mile mk1's could actually be a good bet for a little investment dabble...aside from being a good drive!

There's a cheap focus estate near me right now. Diesel turbo let the seals go on Wednesday. There was much smoke apparently.

I've been reading this thread with interest. I suppose it's something that I've been doing over the years without even realising it. I used to mainly pick up old Jags for the region of £500. Used to run them as long as possible without spending too much and then weigh them in for £200 odd after pulling off spare bits n pieces.
Most recently, following my divorce, money was scarce and I just needed transport. Bought a 1996 Colt for £400 which lasted me 10,000 miles and got through an MOT needing precisely nothing. Only expense was a gear linkage kit. Finally killed it by hitting a transit van in heavy rain. Followed that up with a deeply tedious Toyota Avensis which was £360 and sailed through another MOT. Scrapped it when it needed an exhaust and I couldn't take the boredom anymore. Plus my finances had improved which saw me back in a Jag again.
I do find it odd that so many people turn their noses up at perfectly serviceable cheap cars. I don't even think it's an image thing, but more a genuine belief that a new car on hire for £200+ a month is a better option?

there is something deeply satisfying about owning a car that you really don't care about... I find that really hard though, the only time I've managed it is with an 80 scrap yard K10, never washed or even checked the oil and weighed it in for 80 when the mot was up, I felt really guilty. And most cars I buy cheap I don't want to do anything, but then it's a nice set of wheels, or just replace that panel, and then it's cost as much as any other

It takes all sorts I guess but I just wouldn't trust a £200 piece of curse word to hold up in the event of a high speed crash, I value my life a bit more than that.

We're looking at cars mostly from this century here, and how often do you see a rusty car these days? it's mechanical repairs that kill cheap cars these days, not tinworm. Provided safety critical parts like brakes and steering are ok, i'd think most post 2000 cars, and a fair few from the 90's too, would be structurally sound enough to withstand a crash. Changing the subject, i wish i could find a 305 SRD like the one upthread, i used to have one in the early 90's and it was one of my favorite past cars that i wish i still had, what happened t that one?

It's something I do for my parents for the last few years (their retired finances coudln't afford the 3 year old Passat anymore so I bought it off them, have it 7 years!) Last one was a MK1 Focus Diesel Estate. Brilliant car. Paid 950 euros and can't say I spent more than 250 euro in 3 years, including buying another whole donor for spares for a hundred euros (apologies, my iPad seems to not want my euro symbol to work!) Rust killed that one surprisingly last December. The entire back chassis rails were rotten behind the arch liners. It had every ball joint knocking and you couldn't fil it full of diesel as the filler neck pipe had a hole in it. The donor provided enough for 3 years and 60k miles of motoring. 400 euro a year done and dusted.
Now they have a Rover 75 Tourer. 2004 car brought in from the UK last year. 200k on it and a few choice MG upgrades. 2.0 BMW CDT engine is as sweet as a nut. Put a clutch in it for £100 with new slave and master cylinders. 500 euro for the car and so far 2 MOTs and no donor car it's only cost under a grand. One gentleman owner from new until ;sat year so the body is 100% and not a speck of rust or damage on it.
And because it's a Rover nobody wants them so spares are easy to come by, super cheap and even brand new super cheap on eBay,

Bangernomics is fine while I've got a 2nd car, but losing time off work (if it's my only car) and the time needed to look for a replacement removes much of the cost benefits.
It does, however, allow me to justify owning more than 1 car....and because the 205D, which cost £800 over 4 years ago, has lasted so long, it's been a good buy in banger terms.
I think most people buy new or late cars because they don't know how to buy bangers and want reliability, plus there's the "impress the neighbours" thing too!

I wish I had more use for a banger or three.
Fortunately I drive a company car.
Yes, it costs me benefit in kind tax but downgrading from a BMW or Mercedes as my rank dictates and signing a waiver that I would not ask to change back after 6 months, meant that I save £80.00 per month just on tax alone. (Thank you USA Road trip) or whatever.
However, like with my recycling, the kick or buzz it gives me, knowing that there is an extra tenner, or £100 in my pocket of rather same pleasure another guy bought new for.
Ego, and ignorance plus a bit of modern mystification probably makes many people buy new or almost new.
Prozac started as a perfectly serviceable £300.00 purchase, I spent as much as £400.00 on it, mostly on stuff that made me feel better. And a few safety or MOT items. MOT due mid October so hope it passes straight through, may sell then.
