I suspect none of us own a million mile Volvo, but I was looking around at cars yesterday and realised I was balking at anything over 100,000 miles, possibly to do with the state of my old Smart ForFour which we took from new to over 100k and were somewhat unkind to. Has anyone got to interstellar mileage either by their own hand or through a purchase? How was it? Have an image of a Volvo that has done 3 million miles :

Current Saab is on 167k . I know it had a new turbo , dual mass and clutch and injectors before i bought it though [ £300 ! ]
I used to have the 100k thing as well because i was still treating all cars the same as cars i grew up as a youngster , when 100k millage meant your car was clapped out .
I don't know where the stigma came from , possibly the sort of old ' dad-ism ' talk ?

My landrover discovery has clocked nearly 250,000. Which is enough for it to have driven to the moon, and done some surface exploring. Quite a lot of surface exploring. At least once all the way round.

My current Cavalier has 150k on it and still going strong, but back in 2002 I bought 5 ex Kidderminster taxi Cavaliers with mileages ranging from a mere 320k to a hearty 570k. And the car I went away on my second honeymoon in, in 2004, was an Audi 100 Avant which had accumulated 271k when I bought it a few months earlier. As far as I know, that one is still going!
I too am of the generation that considered an engine well past it's best at 100k, many years in the trade has taught me better! Nowadays I won't entertain a LOW mileage modern diesel as I reckon one that has been thrashed up and down motorways for 100k or so is a better bet than one that has been pootled to the shops twice a week!

Oh and my Volvo 122S Estate which I bought in 1982 with 129k km showing and sold in 2005 with 340k on the clock is DEFINITELY still going, though I did rebuild the original motor not long before I sold it!

Current cars are only just run in, 245k on the 1990 W126, and a measly 146k on the W140

Two out of the three Citroen BX's I have owned were high-mile (190k and 220k), when I was younger I had a Volvo 360GLT which had 212k on it when it threw a rod through the block at about 90mph on the M1. Current 1800 Mondeo daily not even run in at 93k!

A few years back, I bought a Saab 900 (GM-shape) that had done 285,000 miles. It wore them very well to be fair, the interior was mint, no rust and no mechanical issues. The best thing was the price: £256!
Drove it for a while, got the Saab bug and then went down the slippery slope of several 9-3 turbo's

Something a bit more unusual: I had a 944 with an odometer that stopped recording mileage at 249k in 2010. It's still going now 7 years later; must be pushing at least 300k by now. Used a bit of oil, but still drove beautifully.

personally, nothing that high, my 205 gti had 131k when I bought it, now on 166k.
mum bought a 405 TD estate on 170k and its now on 360k.
its quite a difficult one to quantify on a worldwide basis as the culture and distances vary so much, the size of countries and how far people are willing to go.

I have two EA Falcons with over 450,000 kms on them. My daily EA has almost 290,000 on it, and my wife's BG Laser is getting very close to 400,000. Our dailies are only 27 years old too.

My old Audi coupe had about 70k on when I bought it, and I ran it up to 273k without any real trouble, and it'll be back on the road at some point though I haven't quite decided in what form. The TT I bought to replace it as a daily driver was on 27k when it arrived, and it's now on around 161k.

I've not quite reached the starship milage like many of those above but a few years back I had an S-Class 320cdi (W220) that had done 280k and drove beautifully. It had had a few things replaced like suspension, alternator and the usual wear and tear items over the years but nothing detrimental. It would still be going strong now if the mate I sold it to didn't put it into a central reservation on the motorway. Even our daily Audi TT Quattro TDi (8J) had 123k when we bought it a couple of years ago. My other half was a bit concerned about the milage but like I told her, it's a German diesel and will do twice that if looked after. It's now on 146k. Incidentally, we have a 3 year old Evoque with around 30k on the clock and I worry more about problems on that than I do on the TT.

My XJR has just hit 140,000 and sailed through the MOT yesterday and is running spot on. Highest mileage car I've owned has been an e28 BMW M535i which was on 240,000 odd when I sold it. Still ran beautifully.
Mate of mine had a W123 Merc with 340,000 on it. He sold it when he left the UK and I spotted it again on eBay a year later still running strong.

My old Plymouth Voyager (1981) had 496,000 when I scrapped it. My winter car was an 88 528e that had 540,000 on it when I sold it to a guy needing a car to drive around Chicago while on leave from the Navy. My current daily is a 2012 Mazda 5 that I bought new and have driven 190,000 miles. Hopeing to make 200,000 by its sixth birthday.

I am not sure what the highest was but I remember taking a photo of our Mitsubishi Magna (V6 aut) when it hit 300.000km I did 60.000KM+ in 9 months in a brand new KIA Pregio. It never missed a beat. Great little van.

I tend to buy high milers. Even those that are relatively pricey. I bought my current RS4 as 180,000 km and now on 205,000 km
Sierra I just bought at 240,000 km. The last 3 subarus I had were all over 200,000 km when I bought them and I ran them all up over 250,000 km before switching.
On the more "exotic" stuff like the Audi my rationale is that the first breakages will have occurred and been fixed before I get there. e.g. DRC, Oil Cooler, Pre Cats etc etc.
On the older stuff I buy on the condition I can see and if the mileage is high then I'm confident it's been used regularly and not off the road for long period with items perishing.

I had an Audi 100 which had about 180k on it when I bought it to which I added another 5k.My Saab 900 had about 175k on it when I sold it (30k of those were mine. My S-Type has 163k on it. I'm thinking of keeping it and seeing if I can get to 200k.

I got the Granny at about 80k with a very pooped 2.8. Had the ole girl for 16years now (I think) and it is now at about 197k on it. Seems nothing compared to some on here though, especially when there has been several years with mine off the road so it's only really averaged about 10k a year in my ownership Customer at work used to have a DW8 Citroen Berlingo that he clocked up to 500k in, although that met it's demise through the bulkhead rotting out
