Whilst I go through video and photos from this year's Gathering I'm reminded of a good question for shows... Bonnet up or bonnet down?
What makes you decided to do which and when you are viewing or photographing cars which would you prefer?

I would say it depends on the context.
An expected engine, no matter how clean or detailed - bonnet down.
An unusual or defining engine - bonnet up.
The 'Engine' winning RB26 100E loses a lot of context if photographed with the bonnet down.

For me, even if expected, IF someone has lavished their time detailing even the standard engine, bonnet up! If it's something unusual, irrelevant of cleanliness then also up.

Depends how clean it is imo, though Dan's point seems to make sense. Also shows off whether there is some god awful fabrication in there hidden under shiny paint.

Both. Swap half way through the day. Ofcourse there's only any point in opening the bonnet if there's something to see..

As I said to one of my mates when we discussed something similar, my bonnet always goes up, it's just to check the fluids before I leave!

Being a bit of a mechanical ignoramus, nine times out of ten I prefer to see a show car with the bonnet closed. that way can appreciate the over-all look of the car. This is definitely worth showing off. Whereas this should always be shown with the bonnet down. I mean you just can't break up those lines can you?

Agree with Ratchart, generally bonnet up ruins the lines of some cars, but I do like to see a nice engine bay too.
In the past I've gone with the bonnet partly up, doesn't spoil the look of the car completely but also gives a glimpse of what's below....

If you want people to take good pictures of your car, bonnet down. If your engine is detailed enough that you want people to take pictures of that instead, bonnet up. But if its raining, bonnet down. I do think cars get more attention with the bonnet down, but then if its open it tempts people over who wonder why. If you have an engine at both ends, then its both ends up!

Whilst sat at a local car show I noticed that more people come over to look at a car if the bonnet is open. How long they stay looking at the car depends on the age of the car and what's under the bonnet.
Newer stuff only retains interest if there's something worth looking at under there.
Older stuff retains interest anyway as the engine bays look so different to modern stuff anyway.
I'd happily look at the standard and even slightly tired looking engine bay of an old Austin or Morris but not a standard 90's Ford for example.

Looks better down so it doesn't retract from the shape of the car - the reason that when I had my cube with an engine bay worth viewing I converted to bonnet poppers and removed the whole thing at shows.
I have a similar predicament with doors.
No doubt the car looks better photographed with everything closed but then if you have an interior that people might want to see - particularly with tinted rear glass - then you need to leave it open.

Bonnet down, I tend not to photograph cars at show with their bonnets up. If your engines that good that you feel the need to show it off, then why not leave the bonnet at home? Or go down this route...

One of the main reasons I like to see cars at shows is to admire fab work and details. If I wanted to see the outside of a car I can google that. Id much rather the chance to really check stuff out.

If under the bonnet is worth showing, then I also feel bonnet off, gives the best views, without breaking up the overall view, Ttfn Glenn

Bonnet closed - whatever engine is under there.
Having said that an open bonnet at the side of the road I can never resist.

If the most interesting part of the car is under the bonnet then it's obvious you leave it open.
I've taken my 110 to a few local shows this summer, and it's attracted a lot of interest due to the BMW lump in it.
With the bonnet shut it goes from an interesting conversion to a slightly sheddy old Land Rover in a bright colour.

We were at Classics on the Common looking at a modified P100 sierra with the bonnet open, my nephew, who is a testbed engineer, pointed out in general conversation that the nyloc nuts were doing precious little since the threads on several didn't actually reach the nylon, let alone protrude through it. Bonnet up? bonnet now down! Must have touched a nerve

A bit of both depending on what's the biggest feature of the car that needs or is wanted to be shown off, though I do tend to walk past standard engine bays, and am drawn to unique engine swaps and modifications! My Rover P6 I prefer to leave the bonnet down as it spoils the look of the car and I think most people know there's a turbo lump squeezed under the bonnet now. I did leave the bonnet open on my Land Rover during the show day as I thought people would be more interested in the Merc OM606 shoehorned in the front rather than a few decades worth of flaky paint on the outside! I really can't say how many hours I spent chatting to people about it and firing it up for them over the whole weekend, made the 3 months it took to build so worthwhile
