Neighbours 2004 suzuki ignis petrol will start with a jump drive all day with no issues. But still has a dead battery
I used multimeter set to 20 as per you tube and I have zero reading engine running.
Engine running lights on etc car runs fine no stalling
It seems like there is simply zero charge getting to the battery
Any suggestions please
Cheers

You set to DC not AC?
If you see zero volts on the battery with engine running, it ain't connected to the alternator and the battery is completely flat (unlikely), or the meter is busted.
Test the meter on something like a bulb when its on to make sure its working.

Battery is flat not sure if totally flat but not enough to light dash lights up or even click ignition
It's set on 20 v -...
Will check on bulb tomorrow but have used it previously so should be working okay
So if it's not getting charge from alternator what can I check?
Car can run fine once started just won't charge?
Thanks for time and replies so far 😊

Set to 20v AC or DC? *edit* just saw the -... After "20v" is that the symbol you have?
Are you measuring with both engine running and engine off?
If nothing when you turn the key, its either totally knackered and inert, or its not connected.
When you jump, is that from the battery terminals?
Is the battery sealed type or can you open it?
Its pointing towards a battery that is knackered or bone dry. If you can open it, look to see if there's any acid left in it (ffs be careful), but you won't be able to fix that anyway. You MIGHT get away with topping up with de-ionised water but if it really is zero volts on the terminals the battery is toast.

Nothing when engine off and nothing when engine running. I stick the pointy leads into the battery terminals. Yes jumps from the battery terminals Not sure about battery. But neighbour says less than a year old. My concern is that I thought I would get some reading with engine running at battery terminals? Cheers

Check that your multimeter is working properly first, and that you have it on the correct setting, by using it on a domestic battery (an AA or AAA for example from a known good battery from a remote control) and see that it shows 1.5v.

You should get a reading for sure. I'm wondering if the battery earth is connected or your meter is working.
Set the meter to Ohms (horseshoe symbol) and touch the pointy probes together. It should read zero, if it doesn't, check your connection for the leads then test again. Once it reads zero... Test voltage on a bulb that's on, or a battery,or something.
Measure voltage again but put the red lead of the meter onto the positive post. But the black negative lead to something clean and metal under the bonnet that is connected to the chassis. What do you read there?
OR
Set the meter to Ohms (horseshoe symbol) and touch the pointy probes together. It should read zero, if it doesn't, check your connection for the leads then test again. Once it reads zero...
Put one pointy wand in the negative battery terminal, and the other on the engine somewhere nice and metallic. Should read zero. If it doesn't, move the engine probe to a few more metal places under the bonnet. If you don't get zero, then the earth is not good / connected.
Its really, really strange symptoms though.

Many thanks will give it another go tomorrow.
Silly question but could it be something like a fuse link wire similar to the old ford's?

You have a busted lead or it is connected wrong.
Can you take a pic of how you have the leads? Suspect you have it configured for current.

Fuse might have gone inside the meter. Or one of your leads is kaput.

To be fair that type of meter is not fantastic. But works OK for what you are doing with it.
All a moot point, it is pointing to a duff battery. Have a look in the battery at the fluid levels and top them up with deionised water.
