So my six wheel RRC is having a mongy again. Lost 5th and reverse gears - not funny when I've got to push the thing backwards across a carpark to get out. Took the top off the trans tunnel took the gear selector housing off Took the selector yoke off, and its eaten the bush, AGAIN, and God knows where the snap ring is The ball is supposed to be retained in the nylon yoke by the snap ring, all in the centre of the yoke, but it fell out when I pulled the gearstick out! Lucky it stayed in the top of the box The gearstick has chatter wear in the side from the centralising springs THis is the 4th bush and snap ring in 18 months, and I even replaced the gearbox six weeks ago, with a new bush, gearstick, retaining plate and springs and its STILL happening! HELP!!!!!!!

Is this an LT77 gearbox? I'd say the gearstick is warn causing too much movement on the bush. Is it Britpart?

Sorry forgot to put that but in, no its an R380, one bush was sh*tpart coz I couldn't get anything else in a hurry, but the others were bearmach or similar, so I can't blame it on dodgy bits, What I really don't understand is why its happened again with a different box!

IS it the right gearstick and ball for the R380?

yes, its the only one that fits, and the stick was changed with the box, its still happening. Must be a resonance setting up somewhere, but props/mounts etc all seem fine

Those springs are new new or 30 years old new? Physics suggests that if they were not performing correctly I.E. too tight because of age or 'previous tension adjustment' then they will be putting too much pressure on the gear stick causing the vibrations to be absorbed by the bush and not the springs as maybe intended? For arguments sake, I would expect that if you were to do away with the standard springs and deliberately fit super hard springs in their place you would see the same problem but if you were to fit weaker springs the bush would live longer but the stick would have loads of play. Just a theory.

Thanks all for your input. Well I've replaced the bush and snap ring, again, and although I now have a box full of gears AND reverse (Bonus!) the change is pretty poor. Bits have had to be sh*tpart again because I can't get anything else at short notice, and I need the car So it would appear I have replaced a knackered gearbox with a knackered gearbox.
Great.
Time for yet another box, I should have this down to a fine art by now, even though its the worse job on the car!
Thanks again all, much appreciated

At least you know what happens when the box is knackered. Every cloud and all that...

Get out of town... Really? I have no time for jealous cars. My 635 is in on the naughty step for this right now. I use my other cars and leave it standing for months. The odd time I take it out, it behaves really well. Try it, it works!

having driven another RR out past it to test drive for a mate it decided it wouldn't start, it objects to not having its particular space on the drive, (it has marked its spot, it is a LR after all), and if you take your eyes off it for a minute, its off on a jaunt of its own! Oh and it breeds. When I brought it home I had two, now I have six

Thanks, I was thinking about changing the top plate and springs (again) but now the shift has become so poor its actually making my shoulder ache, and there's no guarantee that selecting ie reverse means its actually there, or going to stay in if it is, that I have already sourced another box (thank God for mates in scrappys) and that'll be going in next week. Of course, going to the LT77 box means that reverse is no longer below 5th, now next to 1st. so that should prove interesting until I remember where it is! Watch this space...."why have you reversed into me?"
