Did you install a new carb? Was the engine running OK with what was on there before? What make/ model carb was that? Assumed carburettor problems are, as indicated earlier, often ignition issues in disguise. There's a weber specialist not far from me. Wonder if I can get them to come over and give it a look. If you mean Fast Road Cars - just give him a call for advice, it never harms.

Thanks for your reply, melle.
Bit of an update - weird one really.
I had a good think about this and did a bit more reading.
It was suggested on a reddit Auto DIY sub I read, that maybe there were imperfections in the mounting plates. A commenter then advised a technique of spray gluing a sheet of sandpaper to a plate of thick glass and then grinding the plates to see and then flatten out any bumps or dents.
Both adapter plates, the plastic PTC heater and the carb itself needed this work on inspection.
So I went through a whole season of Breaking Bad sorting that out.
In the same discussion, I asked about using gasket maker like form-a-gasket or Hylomar blue - these had both been recommended by Redline.
All the commenters on that discussion said fit the gaskets and plates completely dry - no additional gasket maker or sealer needed.
So, back I went to fit this all - hey presto! The car starts and runs reasonably. It was definitely rich, so I guess it needed a tune but was great to at least get it back on the road.
While I was doing this, I came across FAJS carbs which are Chinese copies of Webers. They were cheapish via a Czech company, so I bought their DGEV. It arrives as soon as I got the car out on the road.
The day went on and I noticed the engine was starting to rev high and was also running on when switched off.
I decided as the gaskets were dry and not covered in curse word, to dry fitting the new carb - easy enough.
The difference is night and day - still needs a bit of tuning but the car is entirely driveable. I've done about 120 miles since last weekend - mainly on A roads - and it's running fine.
So I'm thinking it was the old Weber carb in the end - probably some imperfection somewhere. Not sure what to do with it - it feels like it's 75% correct. Might be a reasonable fix but I have no engine to test it on.
Anyway, engine is running now. As I say, I'm going to go through a few tuning guides to iron out a few things. Proper chuffed though.
fad - thanks for all your help on this, man! And for the encouragement to stick at it!

Good to hear you have a runner again! DG(A/E)Vs are prone to spindle wear > air leaks. Worth checking if it's an older carb. You can upgrade the plastic spindle bushes with MR128-ZZ roller bearings once you're at it. If you need new gaskets and you want to have a go at having them laser cut locally instead of buying a kit, you can download cutting files from my website. Flattening with sandpaper on a dead flat surface is what I do as well, also agree with dry fitting.

I did wonder if it was the bushings or throttle spindle/plates generally - they were probably in the worst condition of all the parts. Nice little winter project coming.
