The only way we can get the temperature gauge to register in the AE86 is to earth the body of the temp' sender.
There are two earths on the engine, one on the block and one on the head. We cleaned them both and made sure they were sound. We just thought it would earth through the thread of the sender but not having it.
We have had to run a separate wire to make the gauge register. (Botched it for the minute, car is not on the road yet so no matter).
Any ideas?

That's sounds really odd. I'd take the sensor out and clean the threads up. Have you tried a meter on the sensor and the head to see if you have continuity?

Is the head earth on a manifold or the rocker cover ? i used to have issues on old fords when the head earth was on the rocker but not when on the manifold with the temp sender, i allways put it down to the thick rocker gasket preventing a good earth although you'd think the bolt passing into the head would be ok but no allways ?

Head earth is on the lifting eye. That is bolted straight into the head where the sender is screwed into. It took some head scratching to get the gauge to actually register. I earthed the connector to make sure the gauge actually worked and it went up to the top. It has always registered cold but would not go up to show the actual temperature. It has the digital dash fitted so we were dreading it being faulty.

Is it single or two wire? Sounds like a duff temp sensor or not the correct calibration resistance to the dashboard ... ?

I could be wrong but I think a digi dash corolla has different engine sensors than an analogue setup.

Yes, I knew that one about earthing it to check the actual gauge was 'alive'.
