There is no doubt about it - it's the way forward - thing is why has taken it nearly 100 years to catch on ? - the 'Hybrid' car was first invented / built in 1911 - press.porsche.com/news/release.php?id=642 - with the first practical all electric car pre dating this by making an appearance in the 1880's !!

I for one can't wait to start shoving electric motors into older machinery. This, what a project I'll have electrifying my mini!

I do a load of miles everyday for work, but I could quite easily use an electric car if I could afford one. As said before, range isn't an issue on most anymore.

Hot rodding of the future, done by keyboard. Imagine how ace it would be though to be able to map, absolutely, down to the nth degree, what power gets delivered when...

What's this nonsense about horses? Me and my men will have a field cleared in a week, and sown in a day. I'm sure this will just blow over.
There's talk of steam engines overtaking the horse. I can't see it myself. They need water every 10 miles, who's going to put water points across all of the country? There's no interest in something that can only go that far. I'll be sticking with my horse. We've got shire horses for working the fields, horses for transport and small ponies for working down the pits. I'm sure this will just blow over, you'll see.
People on the streets are sayin' that this new kind of engine is going to overtake the steam engine. What a load of codswallop. This empire was built on steam, it's lasted a hundred years and will last hundreds more. We've improved them over the years and they'll keep getting better. We've got steam engines for our boats, trains, traction engines and pumping houses. People are buying petrol in tins, it'll take ages to fill your car up! And how are they going to get petrol to every town and village across Britain? I've seen some of these new petrol cars, they can only go 20 miles and I can run faster! No, I'm sorry, steam is king and it's here to stay. I'm confident that this will all blow over.
I've heard about electric vehicles are the up and coming trend. What tripe. My diesel engine will keep on ticking for another 300 thousand miles, I've no need for a car that can only go 100 miles! And how are we going to get electricity to people's homes? This will definitely blow over, mark my words.

I was thinking about the 23 years timeline, and 23 years ago the internet was an obscure thing that only scientists and sci-fi nerds (aren't they the same people?) used. Mobile phones were clunky primitive things that just made voice calls and text (and only business men & drug dealers used them!) If more electric cars looked like these then I'll be happy.

I'll just point out that having run lpg vehicles for years with 160/180 mile range it's a complete PITA. you are constantly aware of how much fuel you have remaining and thinking where you can go to refuel, if you get there and the pump is broken it's more of a pain. 400 mile range is the minimum I would be confident about. I've got that at the moment and have still been caught out a few times by shut stations, at least I can run on petrol rather than being stranded awaiting recovery.

Our Kia has a range of 90-115 miles (it's temperature dependent), but I don't find it that prohibitive. Obviously, if you do a regular daily run of more than that then you'll be needing to find a rapid charger en route, but for the majority of peoples commutes, that's plenty. And the range of EVs is improving all the time. I reckon 200 miles is the sweet spot where people will feel confident.

I think for a daily the range won't be an issue for the vast majority of the population. Ive had many motors with similar range on a tank of fuel. My impreza never made more than 170 miles out of a tank, my cossies were all in single figure mpg and my 2.1 capri on twin 48s used to take a gallon to start!

There are a few electric beetles being made, for example
I drive an EV as my daily, I am on my 3rd one as I've always liked to change cars just to see what else is out there. Current daily is a 2015 Nissan electric van. I am a convert to EVs, but what got me started?
Having seen what oil exploration (and burning) does around the world I have really changed over the last 5 years or so into an eco-friendly vegetarian plastic-avoiding environmental activist I got my first EV (a cheap 2003 Citroen) so as to not be a hypocrite turning up to meetings/demonstrations etc, and I liked the relaxing silence and the fact my EV was mot and tax exempt, but I didn't expect to love it so much. I then put in solar panels at home so I can often charge up for free as well. (actually, charging at rapid chargers at services etc is free as well )
It has made me want to do an EV conversion to an old car now, so i can get the acceleration, low running cost, reduced maintenance and other benefits such as instant heating, never having to go to petrol stations, and not having to buy brake pads, exhausts, belts, oil, filters, plugs, gaskets, etc.
Just got to decide what vehicle to convert, and how, and how much money to throw at it, it ain't cheap!

fad your list is for stuff within the last 25 years WRONG and here is why
MiniDisc - Sony brand audio players were on the market by 1992 (so developed long before roll out)
Optical Computer Mouse - Early optical mice, first demonstrated by two independent inventors in 1980.
Satellite TV - was available in the USA from 1975 if not earlier
Recordable DVDs - There were several formats developed for recording video on optical discs before the DVD. Optical recording technology was invented by David Paul Gregg and James Russell in 1958 and first patented in 1961. A consumer optical disc data format known as LaserDisc was developed in the United States, and first came to market in Atlanta, Georgia in 1978, Recordable DVDs would have been available for industry long before the use for the general public as PCs weren't able to cope back then.
Lithium Rechargeable Batteries
Doppler Radar - The Doppler effect (or Doppler shift), named after Austrian physicist Christian Doppler who proposed it in 1842, Digital fast Fourier transform (FFT) filtering became practical when modern microprocessors became available during the 1970s
Flash Memory - Flash memory (both NOR and NAND types) was invented by Fujio Masuoka while working for Toshiba circa 1980
Camcorders - In 1983, Sony released the first camcorder
Satellite Radio - known to have been in development from at least 1992 before going commercial in 2000
Flip Phone - The first Motorola model to support the clamshell design was the MicroTAC, created in 1989, although General Telephone & Electronics (GTE) held the trademark from the 1970s for its Flip-Phone (one of the first small hand-held electronic phones), until 1993
JPEG - public release date 1992 Microblogging Caller ID - In May 1976, Kazuo Hashimoto, a prolific Japanese inventor with over 1000 patents worldwide,[6] first built a prototype of a caller ID
Mobile Broadband - he CELLPAC[10] protocol developed 1991-1993 was the trigger point for starting in 1993 specification of standard GPRS (General Packet Radio Service)
Blogs MP3 Player Electronic Word Processing - In 1974, Koplow's interface program was developed into the Wang 1200 Word Processor, an IBM Selectric-based text-storage device.
Webmail (web-based email) - The first Web Mail implementation was developed at CERN in 1993 SMS (Text Messaging)- Adding text messaging functionality to mobile devices began in the early 1980s.

fad your list is for stuff within the last 25 years WRONG and here is why I believe I said: But let's not let pedantry get in the way of a good point, eh? I also said: "Off the top of my head" - I'm sure with the power of Google I could have been as accurate as you. But while we are in the realms of pedantry... "MiniDisc - Sony brand audio players were on the market by 1992 (so developed long before roll out)..." So, 25 years then? "Optical Computer Mouse - Early optical mice, first demonstrated by two independent inventors in 1980." Demonstrated. Not released as a consumer product. "Recordable DVDs - There were several formats developed for recording video on optical discs before the DVD. " so everything you wrote after that was irrelevant since I was talking about DVD not other mediums or formats. "Doppler Radar - The Doppler effect (or Doppler shift), named after Austrian physicist Christian Doppler " I know aaaallll about RADAR, ex RADAR engineer. Again... Commercial availability and "possible" are very different things. "Satellite Radio - known to have been in development from at least 1992 before going commercial in 2000" - so, 25 years then..? It is still 2017, right? "JPEG - public release date 1992" - sooo, 25 years... GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is NOT broadband. Completely different protocols. "The first Web Mail implementation was developed at CERN in 1993" - so... 24 years? Thank you for trying to tidy up the timeline for me. Though as demonstrated, you have misunderstood / misrepresented a couple of things. Technology and principles discovered doesn't equate to commercially available, DEVELOPED products. My point was, things that are mainstream and normal now were not 25 OR SO years ago. Some have been and gone. Imagine what we'll have in 25 years time.
