Hi guys,
With my AX/Saxo project I'm swapping the AX rear axle for a Saxo one. I seem to remember that the handbrake mechanism is different and you need the Saxo handbrake. Guess what I forgot to remove when I was stripping it 🙄
Is there any reason I can't have a hydraulic handbrake instead of a regular cable one? It'd have to be a ratchet style instead of a fly-off one (if such a thing exists).
Something that's niggling me though is I seem to remember problems with another Citroen (XM?) that used the brake pads in the handbrake system and once they cooled down the car would go off on its own.
Any help of ideas would greatly be appreciated 😊👍🏻

From memory you have to have a solid (wire) connection that operates independently of the hydraulic system.

Hydraulic handbrake is only allowable on pre 1965 cars. After that it has to be mechanical.
You can have a hydraulic handbrake, but if it is the only thing on there it will need a mechanical means of operation for the MOT test. (Doesnt say in the book that it has to be the mechanical means of operating instead of the hydraulic, just that it must appear that way to the tester!)

Information
Vehicles certified as being designed before 1 January 1905 and constructed before 31 December 1905 do not require a parking brake.
Hydraulic parking brakes as a sole means of operation are not acceptable on vehicles first used on or after 1 January 1968. However, they may be used to assist the application or release of a mechanical brake.
Reason for Rejection
Vehicles first used on or after 1 January 1968 the parking brake is not capable of being maintained in operation by direct mechanical action only.

From a purely get it through an mot point, I used to sell lots of cable outlets and inners to rally people using hydraulic handbrakes so they could have something the mot man could see.

Unless I can convince my MOT'r that the original cables are in use 😉

I assume that an electric handbrake runs a solenoid which pulls a cable in a conventional manor.
Am I right in thinking that my 1967 vehicle could have a hydraulic only handbrake?

and yes the electric handbrakes often operate a cable, they all have a mechanical ratchet of some kind.

i don't have beef with electric hand brakes per se', other than the fact its unnecessarily complex and is not solving an actual problem (for the user)

Citroen CX's have the tiny round handbrake pads that are a nightmare to adjust and not the best when 100%.
As for Electronic handbrakes I have had 1 in my A6 for a few years and you get used to it but it has no benefits what so ever that I can think of. The biggest nightmare is when you change the pads as there is a glitch in the VAG software which means when using VCDS you have to retract the pistons then wait 30 seconds before closing down the module otherwise you can screw it up and its ~ £250 a calliper.

I've only ever owned one car with an electric handbrake, it used to tell me it had failed everyday but still worked fine and passed the MOT!

It was the cx that had the dodgy handbrake.
When the disc cooled down it would shrink sloighty. This would result in the brake not gripping enough and the car rolling down the hill as happened to my dad!
