Following on from a post by spookytim2 in classics for £1500, I was at the Thurton show/autojumble last weekend chatting to a feller with a Mk1 Cortina, 2.0 pinto and type 9 'box.
He told me that he's had problems with people telling him that because of his mods, he's 'ruined' the car too.
This took me back to a show I took my Mum's 1965 Mini 'woody' Countryman to, where some idiot got irate that it had the wrong grille, to which my response was
' Well here's 10p, go and phone someone who gives a s&*t! Its got the grille on that SHE wants'
Whilst I appreciate that there are rivet counters out there, and I would never decry someone who wants to do their car as concours, its not for me (those who have seen the state of my RRC will know this) and I am far more interested in an older car still being on the road, regardless of what its been fitted with.
I also know that I think some mods are awful, but I can still appreciate the work that someone has done on their car. My negative commentS usually refer to badly done mods, such as nyloc nuts on critical parts where the bolt thread doesn't reach the nyloc!
And at the end of the day, whose car is it anyway?
Any thoughts anyone?

Ugly is in the eye of the beholder. I just enjoy seeing old cars getting used. I find that I can look at a weird custom job and appreciate the work and skill that went into it even if I don't actually like the result.

Yep one guys trash is another man's treasure. I was at a show recently when my friend was harping on about how some fella had ruined his 68 mustang by fitting it with Thailand lights from a 73 mustang, plus the wheels were wrong! Now I consider myself to be quite an anorak when it comes to Mustangs, but I didn't notice the tail lights being wrong, although I did think the wheels didn't work as clearly they belonged on a mini-truck in the nineties! But really the car was flawless! But I said to him that he's obviously done it his way to his tastes as its his car! My mate, the purist didn't get it, but he has benefiting his car for nearly thirty years because it needs to be right! Me, I'd rather drive it than sit there patiently waiting for the right parts to show up! Goodness knows what he'd think of this beauty... But the guy obviously had a theme in mind, perhaps he worked at the fair... on the dodgems or something! But anyway the talents and work that must've gone into this thing must've been phenomenal!

Everyone's entitled to there opinion, as long as I like it I'm really not bothered. I could post a photo of my living room wallpaper here and I'm sure a couple will like it and a few would say it's awful. Why would I give a toss?

I have a 1967 MK2 Morris Cooper, when I bought it there wasn't much of an interest in them yet over the years they've increased in popularity some what.
The original engine, which I still have tucked away in the garage, was problematic, expensive and pretty dull. So I put a Nissan engine in it. 1/10th the cost of a replacement head for the original engine, twice the power as standard, 5speed box, reliable, predictable, munched up the miles and all in all made for a very pleasant motoring experience, hence why I did it.
I took it to multiple meets and stuff and I was guaranteed to get a remark somewhere. "You want 10" wheels on that rather than 13"s". Well if the wheels offend you come and have a look at this!
I build a car for myself, what I want and what I like. If people think I've ruined it that's fine. It's not parked in their garage. If we was all the same it would be pretty dull around here.

This is the exact reason why I'm on here. Holland has the most rivet counters per head of sivilissation. I Loved my rotboxes and for me it was just that they feld right and kept going on a budget. Always got slack. br]For me it started years ago when I had a practical classics subscription and got an extra magazine from them wich was made by a Guy called Kevin who was also in PC at that time. I think he was even together with will holman. It feld like nothing I had ever seen and it feld at home. They were building a sebring MGb gt. Nothing like we have ever seen in Holland . Not even close. And they used a Classic car for that. All dutch rivet counters would faint... So in short , Thanks retrorides for keeping me sane. I'm not alone out there. Amen

To a certain extent someone walking up to you at a show and saying something negative about any car, in any condition or modified extent boils my pee. What most important is the car is there, on show, if it wasnt there, there would be one less car, if all the cars that someone didnt like wernt there, there would be even less. I know what to expect when i see almost any standard classic, ive seen most of them before, to see a modified classic at a show is something of interest, something new, appreciate the creativity and personisation, it says alot more about the owner than a standard car, not that I'm being negative about a standard car at all, they are our heritage. When I had my mini estate it was standard when i got it, and i modified it, MG Metro engine, twin carbs, minilights etc, all the usual stuff, but when i had the roof painted silver to match the silver stripes on the side of it, someone id known for some time told me that id ruined it when i had the roof done and started lecturing me about how i should have left it standard. my reaction was ''its only paint!'' my dad was a little less diplomatic and wrote out a list of all the things that wernt correct on the chaps car (my dads car was modded, but he got really geeky when he saw an almost standard maxi with the wrong bits on it lol) If someone rescues a really old, say 1930-40 car from a barn its going to be alot easier to use what is easily available to get it back on the road instead of fussing about getting it back to when it left the factory, so if that old rare car ends up with different running gear and a slightly rodded look perhaps, just because it makes it possable to drive it, get over it, it exists! If you think it should be standard, show me your car!

I can still remember being at Bromley pageant 25years+ ago, we were in my mates austin Devon hotrod, when a wee fella came over, giving dave big grief over how he had ruined this wonderful piece of British tin, turned it into some sort of abomination and should never be allowed on the show field with all these beautiful cars, Dave, bless him, kept his cool over this tirade of his just recent show winning "best of britain" at the hotrod nationals, with his polite answer/question, "oh what car do you have then?", An "Austin seven special" , by this time I was gettin a little peeved with this twonk, I'm afraid my pee was reaching boiling point by now, "ah a f-ucking HOTROD then" he scurried off at that comment from me, Dave and I later found the "Special"complete with twin carbs alloy head and alloy wheels and a very badly home made body, it was just pure wibblepoo, it even had frayed rear brake cables, a couple of substantial oil leaks, 3 cracked tires plus more, we did give the car an autopsy, a loud one,🙄 within hearing distance of the owner, I think the old adage comes to mind, "Don't throw stones in glass houses" was about correct

I get comments about my SIMCA-Talbot pickup. A guy at Newark Autojumble has told me more than once that the slot mag wheels, the MATRA Rancho grille and the 205 GTI seats spoil it. I suppose he's entitled to his opinion but it's my truck and I like it that way so.... him!! He didn't ask further to find out that it's got a 1442 Bagheera engine in place of the original 1118cc...That would horrify him. He's never seen brother Kev's 1100 hatchback.... that would give him a heart attack... It's 16 valve Honda powered..!!

i hate rivet counters.
i don't get worked up though when some idiot thinks i want to hear their opinion, i just don't care lol my response is "well, good job i didnt build it for you then" or "good job its my bike and not yours" or something to that effect.
have to laugh because they're usually the type of people who don't own anything cool, or do any type of work on vehicles. And if they do own something it usually never leaves the garage, and someone else work son it lol at least mine are out on the road haha

Never had anyone tell me I've ruined my car*, but maybe I just couldn't hear them over the sound of my awesome.
*other than me quite regularly over the last year and a bit, and maybe Will Datman reminding me I need to sort the rusty bits out (which are on the list of things to do still!)

I've had this comment said to me regarding my International Tractor. Tractors unlike cars are 99.99% of the time painted in the manufactures colours, so an International should be Red unless you are the military (RAF painted them green apparently) or you have an industrial (yellow) version.
I painted mine in green as it had no paint left on it and I had 3 large tins of this particularly bogey coloured green paint in the shed.
One day it lost power to the all hydraulic steering and I crashed it into a very deep ditch. It ended up on its side in the ditch and I had to climb out using the wheel to step up the bank. You could have driven by the ditch and not even noticed a whole tractor in it. Anyway after getting an old manny and his Hymac to lift it back out the assembled audience were more concerned that I'd ruined it by painting it green than by stuffing it down the ditch.
"that's no right thing to do" apparently...

I've had quite a few comments on the amazon about this, but we are liking it's montego turbo diesel power, and the 45 mpg, it has transformed it from its finnekety 2.0 petrol at 25 mpg . My response is that it is used s a daily, and it's not a show car, but here to be used and seen..........where's yours? To which they either haven't got one, or have one that they are 'restoring '

The Model A restorers are the worst. They even have a uniform ( striped engineers pants & hat ) I had a flock of these shuffle past my car at a show and one of them gave me the death ray stare and said " you took a lot of liberties with that body " Yep... I did...

BTW... Anybody ever heard of the German coachbuilder Spohn? They made the ugliest cars known to man, loosely based on the '51 Gm LaSabre concept car. One of them is built by modifying a Veritas. Which is itself a racecar based on a modified pre war BMW. Somehow the restorers are falling over backwards in praise over that one... Try and figure that one out...

I've always considered it to be a compliment, mainly because it's usually said by the sort of person that has a rusting heap on their drive that they're 'going to restore, one day'. Yeah, when you finally get enough money & talent together. Not the sort of person I want to like my cars, stick to your BRG MGB's...
