Right. This is a little thread on what my two kids are doing for RRG17. Being under 16 they wanted a way of getting more involved, despite the obvious hurdle of not being able to drive! Now, if you were camping at RRG last year, you may have seen the pair of them riding around the campsite over the weekend (often accompanied by an odd fellow on a lawnmower) In case you didn't see them, or just forgot, these are the bikes in question; Now the basic plan is to somehow tie the bikes in with the Vitesse. Without wanting the bikes to follow the same scheme, they devised a plan. The Stingray was to have a similar look to the car, as it has a big fat rear wheel, we thought that would be most suited. The Lowrider was to have a kind of 'reverse' scheme. So, with a fair idea of what they wanted (but not rigid) work began. The bikes were stripped down to the bare frames and I stripped the original paint off. (As much as they and I want them to be involved, I didn't want them getting on the wrong side of industrial paintstripper. Quickly followed by a coat of acid etch primer;

As the Stingray was to follow the colour scheme of the Vitesse, the frame was treated to 3 coats of "Triumph white 19"; And after sanding and etch primer, the forks had the same; Now the Lowrider is having a 'reversed' scheme, the frame was painted in the exact same shade of green that the Vitesse wheels are; And to further tie in with the car, the mudguards were painted in the same Triumph white; The mudguards will have some further work, but I won't say what yet

After much thought, it was decided that spraying the whole of the wheels for the chopper would give the best (and less fuss) results, so, that's what happened; Which brings us up to the weekend just gone. My Daughter spent a fair while with the Brasso cleaning the wheels and other chrome that was being kept; Whilst she was doing this, we reassembled the front forks on the Stingray;

As the afternoon progressed, so did the bikes. Previously my Daughter had recovered her seat and made some handlebar grip covers (She's incredible with a sewing machine!) and we slotted in the front forks and wheels; And whilst we did that, my son dropped the handlebars, seat and rear mudguard on his; You'll have to excuse the blurry pics at this stage as I didn't realise that I had dirty fingerprints on the lens, but it's safe to say that they're both well chuffed with how their bikes are shaping up so far

Great bikes, a job well done! Thanks. They're certainly happy with how they're progressing. We've got some nice little custom touch's in the pipeline to really pimp them up. Also there's all the boring stuff like brakes to sort out yet

Right then. I have to admit that my Daughter and I are a little bit excited about this next bit! Remember me saying that the mudguards for the lowrider were going to get some more work?! Well, tonight they got it. It's a little touch brought over from the lowrider car scene. Something seen quite often is lace paint, and we decided that we should have a go at it. I mean, how hard could it be? Well, one of the hardest parts was finding some appropriate lace. Your average curtain won't do as this is a really narrow part that we're painting so we need a reasonably fine detail pattern. After exhausting all the local shops, we actually got lucky on Ebay!! Anyway, enough waffling, you lot want to see pictures don't you! I didn't take any 'in process' photos as I was just winging it tbh. So, here is the result of my first attempt at 'lace painting'; And a quick teaser on the bike; To be fair, we're over the bloody moon how they've turned out!

Now THAT I like, had it on the tank of my Fizzy in the '80's and loved it ever since, my favourite colour combination as well. Bookmarked for sure.

So, another weekend, and some more bits back on the bikes. Lowrider first, Mudguards fitted (very carefully!!) along with repolished brake calipers; and some nice new brake cables; The handlebar grips my Daughter made; And the Stingray got similar treatment; And a little sneak of our practice go at airbrushing;

They both look fantastic, i really like the lacework on the lowriders mudgaurds, was it hard to do? Not as hard as I thought it would be. The hardest part was getting the lace to stay in position on the mudguard, which wasn't easy at all due to the shiny paint and compound curves. I ended up stretching it a bit and stapling it together on the reverse side. Turned the spray gun down a bit and kept a fair distance so as not to blow the paint underneath the lace.
