RamptonsCambridge. Off the beaten track. Had a fair few bits out of there for 90's cars although I suppose they have to move with the times and have a clear out now and then. There was the odd relic laying about and they still had those corner bits in the yard with unidentified bits of commercial vehicles and space ship parts. There was a Mk1 transit camper in there but it was proper dead for years, finally met it's maker in the last year or so. The last time I was in there about a year ago I couldn't take my eyes off the amount of clean rover 75's that had been stuffed through the windscreen with the forks. Phone first, take cash. One of those... 'go in and have a look' places, just wish it was bigger! RandalsHaven't been here for donkeys but it looks like its still going, don't know what the score is with walking about though anymore. I bought a head for a 1.6 escort here once and rolled it up in manky carpet and walked 2 miles with it on my shoulder. Gave in to pain and got the bus. They have those dark shaded bits where the cars don't move for years.

Wodbury Car Breakers Ham Lane, Exeter EX5 1LG
My first ever scrapyard 😊 alas having mived i havemt been for years but its still going strong. When i went two HUGE German sheppars wandering around that look intimidating as anything but will play tug and fetch using a it of radiatir pipe after five mins. They only have a small main site but fields abd fields elsewhere. Never couldnt get a part. And being in Devon the spoiler laws havent reached there yet! I remenber a skip full of small metal bits piled way too high eith a tranny van balancing on top. You could wobble the van!
Very Good thread idea! We should start mapping them up when we have a few locations!

Test Valley Car Breakers, Andover Road, Ludgershall, SP11 9PE Fair bit of modern, and some late-90s stuff and a little bit of earlier. All the cars are just dumped on the ground (no racks) and it can get a bit muddy at times, so worth bringing a jack and a piece of board if you need suspension bits. Prices seem to vary from 'blimey that was cheap' to 'HOW MUCH?!!". Noon Car Breakers, Linden Dairy, Hollom Down, Salisbury SP5 1BP I havent been for over a year, so no idea on stock now, but used to have a complete mix of 1970s to modern. All on racks but last time I went they seemed happy for me to wander around. Used to be run by a really nice chap, proper old school breakers yard, but without the bad attitude and flea bitten dog! Taken over by his sons (iirc), and now do a lot of 'recycling' and some second hand bits off the shelf. Used to offer a 'we'll take it off the car for you' service, but not sure if they still do. J Jones Motor Spares, Caen Hill, Nr Devizes, Wiltshire. SN10 1RD Never been inside, but have dropped off a scrap car. Looked a big yard, but no idea if you walk around. TBH didnt seem particularly good to deal with, but YMMV.

H Pringle in the West End of Newcastle. cars are still piled 3 and 4 high in a derelict barn, but no worries about accidents, as you're given the "yellow reflective jacket of invincibility"

Can I just point out that there aren't any laws stopping yard owners letting customers look round cars themselves. In my job I go to a lot of scrappies and the main reason why they have stopped letting people wander around is plain theft - people helping themselves to what they want and not paying. It's a common complaint with all owners. There's no reason why a yard can't make it safe enough for people to wander around, the EA Environmental Permit it should hold doesn't stop it and neither does the council supplied scrap metal dealers licence. With the metal price being so low and prices for Cat B/C Cars being high I can see why they want to protect their livelihoods, they need t sell every part they can.

Charles Trent aka Pick A Part have two yards, one in Rugby, one in Poole. Seem to be getting smaller in size though so I don't know if they are gearing up to get rid of the DIY yards
