Before I ask this question I'll clarify I LOVE cars, I spend far too long searching Ebay, C & C, RR and a few others just "looking" for cars. I'm not a sneak trying to make a quick buck on a car flip. Some love Footie, or Rugby, I love Cars.
I have a sum of money coming to me soonish following a family bereavement (£25k)
I can do one of a few things, Bank it, put it in ISA's or similar bond type things, or buy a car I want/like with the knowledge it will hopefully hold its value come the time I wish to sell it. I know there's no guarantees but I don't just wanna chuck the money away.
I have a deep love for Yank motors in general, but would look at J, Porsche or something interesting. I don't tend to like British vehicles and have owned over 100 VW's, only a Splitty has eluded me thus far so I'm not too fussed about chucking my investment money into a VW.
I've considered the following
Tri 5 Chevy Charger/Challenger Porsche (man they are expensive) VW Splitty despite my comments above
So RR what can you offer and suggest,
Many Thanks

Personally I'd be looking for something that I like, rather than something I think might go up in price.
What I would say is - find something in good solid condition and make it better, as buying something close to A1 condition will already be at the high end of the price range, so any chance of making money on the car will be slim.

I know isas are a waste of time 25k will yield roughly £10 a month and it'll take two years to put it in as it's 15k a year limit

TBH i would be tempted to buy a car and maybe spend a few thousand on rare car parts . Some stuff you can literally double your money in 5 years for just having something sat in your shed for a while.
Obviously this only applies to certain parts for certain marques that you need to know about how desirable they are .

NSX or a Skyline Gtr that is around 22 years old.
Skyline will shoot up in value once it hits 25 years old.

I was reading recently (octane mag possibly) that BMW 8 series are going up in value and the time to buy is now.

Already hit the roof as far as value is concerned I think. I have seen them at 25-45K for 'mint' ones and 7K for a sunbleached california left hooker with no interior. Sad as I really want one. But 25K gets you a lot of other vehicles. I would buy something you enjoy, and will retain its value. Who cares if you don't make a profit. if it sells for 20K in a decade. you have paid 500 quid a year to fly about in a Porsche, Challenger, Charger or get stuck overheated at the side of the road in a bay window camper.

I'd probably go for the oldest decent usable 911 you could find, or a BMW E28 M5 (or 535i if M5's now out of budget?). My brother in law is selling his 911 soon at around your budget, may be too new though as it's water cooled (2005 Carrera 2S 3.8L)?

What about the Alfa GTV V6, as prices have been climbing for nice ones. Plus you'll have a fantastic car with a great sounding engine.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.
This from a reply above sums up what I'm trying to achieve, "" I would buy something you enjoy, and will retain its value.""
The NSX/GTR and Porsche had me nodding, I promised myself I'd own a Porsche one day
but the Aston made my insides tingle !! An Aston...really ?
I'm off to research :-)

Japanese a Nissan GTR, R32 and as original as possible. R33 not quite as fancied I don't believe although I don't think that a decent r34 is within reach. A Tommi Makinen evo still has potential, as does a Subaru P1. Honda S2000, especially the second generation (facelifted) one.
Most porsches are doing very well although I cannot believe that there isn't some sort of bubble....!
Yank stuff Camaro iroc-z Pontiac Trans am smokey and bandit. And... Fox body Mustang. Try finding a good one, it's getting really hard and the really nice ones have increased significantly in the US.
Alfa Romeo before fiat bought them. V6 obviously... GTV6 or 75 is a bit cheaper than the coupes.
Ferrari Mondial. Cheapest on auto trader at £29k. There is an F355 at £45k (would require finance) and although it's done 151 000 miles, what a car! ;-)
I'm not sure about Astons. The DB7 is, frankly, not looking like it's going to rise in value... The bigger engined ones may be worth a look but not for £25k. The V8V and DB9 are too new and too common and have some way left to fall yet.
Bentley Mk vi Mercedes W108 The Mercedes W116 and 126 are a touch too common to have started to increase in value but i think that they will, in time. Mercedes SL R129 are firming up quite considerably.
The Bentley Continental, above is brilliant but couldn't be purchased for less than £28k and will be expensive to maintain given that the parts are now just so scarce (i am lead to believe)...
(This is a brilliant thread. I'm always in a similar quandary. I had an Alfa 75 which I bought for £4000 almost exactly a year ago and sold for £4500 a week ago.... sounds small fry but a 12% return isn't bad in this day and age! ;-)

Friend has Ferrari mondial which was at the NEC recently and did not sell dispite being cracking.
I really would stay away from exotica for that money. One problem or imperfection and your left with a pink elephant you cannot shift.
You don't have to spend it all and you can have money as a back up if you spend less. Maybe look at having a couple of cars a year maybe doing them up and punting them on.

I'd go for the 911, even the 996 models are going up in value, I sold mine last year a 2001 C4 Coupe, I made 3k on it in 2 years & drove it every day, there ain't many daily drivers you can do that with. My speculation for a modern classic on a budget is the Audi TT 99-06, especially the V6, better than the 911, imo.
