A rare opportunity to own a rare JDM 90s gem. Up for sale is my 1996 Mitsubishi Mirage Asti ZR 1.6 MIVEC. This was one of the coupes produced in the Japanese naturally aspirated heyday, it was intended as a direct competitor to Honda's Type Rs and the toyota Levin.
Former readers car of the week on PH, and point of discussion at every car meet ("i've never seen one of these before" etc)
The 1.6l DOHC 4g92 puts out around 170bhp, and has a 8000RPM redline, MIVEC kicks in at 5000rpm, making the car very rev happy and sprightly off the line, seeing as it only weighs around 1100kg.
The interior is a major highlight of the car, it's in great condition and features fantastic period recaro seats and trim, and original MOMO wheel.
Parts are surprisingly easy and economical to get hold of, I will include a workshop manual and list of part numbers for common items.
I bought the car around 2 years ago as a rolling restoration project, thousands have been spent getting it back to a tidy and serviceable condition. I have covered approx 10k in those 2 years and the car has never let me down, don't let the mileage put you off, it still pulls fantastically and drives just as well as cars i've owned with half the mileage.
The Asti has been in the UK 11 years, and had one owner for around 9 of those. When I took it on, the underside had suffered so I had the rear chassis legs plated, outer sills replaced, and one of the rear wheel arches cut out and replaced. Currently the car is structurally sound, has some surface corrosion underneath, but is in good condition for a JDM car that's been here 11 years. In terms of bodywork elsewhere, there are some blemishes and marks here and there, and a couple of spots of surface rust, but nothing unexpected for a 21 year old car. As you can see from the pics it polishes up nicely.
Mechanically, the car wants for nothing, I had all major service items done last year. It's had a new cambelt and water pump, valve clearances checked, 4 wheel laser geo (wheelsinmotion), 4 new tyres (Toyo T1r), numerous bushes replaced, new discs, pads and calipers all round. Compression and leakdown test carried out which showed healthy figures.
Currently being freshly serviced with new oil and filter, terracleaned and aircon re-gassed. plenty of life left in tyres, discs and pads. New 12 month MOT (no advisories).
The car has a couple of subtle and considered modifications-
-Ultralite D1 15" wheels, chosen for their light weight (OEM wheels will be included in sale at no extra cost).
-Blitz panel filter
-JVC USB head unit
-Full s/s exhaust from downpipe back, with sports cat (nice burble, not too loud).
Insurance and running costs are pretty cheap, does about 28mpg with mixed driving, and only cost me £330 to insure last year. As mentioned before most parts are easy to source, and very reasonable. (discs around £15 each, pads about £20 a set).
As could be expected for a 21 year old JDM car at this price point, there are a couple of points worth mentioning-
-Passenger side electric window cables worn out, window drops into door if you go past half way, so i've disconnected the switch, shares this mechanism with the CJ colt so should be easy to source a replacement.
-the car has a few small marks and cosmetic rust spots, nothing huge or unexpected on a car of this age, it's not in concours condition but does clean up very well.
-could do with a fresh underseal before the winter
Any questions, get in touch. Priced at £2000, offers considered. no p/x thanks. Really hoping this goes to an enthusiast who will continue to maintain and restore it, will only get rarer, and should only increase in value. Located just outside St Albans, in Herts.
