Mk1/2 Fiesta. Base spec 1100 with a loud exhaust and lows. Absolutely regret having to get rid of my mk2. Surprised me no end in regards to how it went/handled. I think the key is no power anything. So much more fun to drive something where the physical force you exert on the controls dictated how much force is applied at the other end.

Go lightweight, I drove this as a daily for years, 650kg 2 litre pinto but other engine options are available, mainly the crossflow. No power assistance or electronics to let you down either.

I'm with jiminwatford, especially as I commute in a 2002 Seicento Sporting Schumacher. It's very cheap to run and huge fun around the lanes of Kent. Matching the moderns doing 70 along the short dual carriageway sections is no problem and I always out-brake and out-corner them on the connecting roundabouts. Parts are readily available, cheap and easy to fit. With just 54Bhp from new, it's never going to challenge the skin of a rice pudding but it's serious fun.

i'd suggest puma as well. i've just bought a 1.7 to use as a daily whilst i recommission the usual suspects for the summer.
big drop in power/torque for me but it's no slug, nippy rather than fast. just enough power to enjoy but not enough to get into real trouble. mine was cheap (£300 cheap) and it shows but, so far, it is fun and the handling is much better than i expected. short gearing makes it a bit buzzy but it is what it is.
it's got a few creature comforts - p/windows, p/steer, traction control, remote locking and boot release, heated front screen etc. on the downside, it also has a few "issues" including intermittent instrument panel (mine has the digi dash), heater control valve stuck, idle control a bit wayward etc but that well known bay of dreams suggests that i can get all i need for around £60 (and some of those parts are even new !!). my rear arches are not rusty but probably will be by next tuesday.

Not the cheapest in the world, but my x1/9 is very fun on the twisty roads. The sensastion of the speed, noise etc makes you feel like mario andretti at about 50mph. About 2k for a runner though... and not the most reliable thing, as i have been finding out! Wont lose money on one though, and you get pop up lights. Yeh I had one for a few yrs, great little car, mint fun

Can I suggest a smaller engined version of the rover k8 200 series? Twin cam Engine is fast, can be altered lightly to release the right noises, and they handle good...

My first thought was an ADO16 or a Mini (a real one, not the bum ugly New Mini). Nothing wrong with a Morris Minor either. I drove an elderly friend's 1000 on a club run many years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Even an Allegro would do.

Or a 944. Quickly appreciating and bags of fun. People may want to come after me with pitch forks... however. A few weeks ago now I bought a R53 MINI Cooper S, one of those new ugly ones (I do also have a MKII cooper to balance out the evil new jelly mould mini out) and I have to confess it's probably the most fun I've had in a car for a long time. The older ones are 15 years old now, not retro but also not very modern either, despite that I find them very quirky, the interior seems to be very different and a very pleasant place to be. Despite my preconceived notions about the car it has turned the most basic and mundane journeys into quite a good bit of fun. Plenty enough room for 4, motorway speeds are comfortable and it seems to accomplish them with ease. Economy wise I have been very impressed with mine so far, 400/450 mile per tank seems to be achievable if it isn't driven in full on crazy b'stard mode all the time. I also thought they was a little girly, so I did the manliest thing I could and bought one in purple and some how it makes me like it even more! Alternatively, 306 Rallyes seem to have remained affordable, I also like the 106 XSI and GTI. The E36 also appeals to me a lot at the moment and I am just waiting for their prices to sky rocket like the E30 and become unobtainable as a cheap bit of fun. Clio 172s have always tickled my fancy but are not retro, much like the mini so I suppose that rules them out as well. Citroen AX? I saw a pretty cool one with a TU4 (I think) and running gear out of a VTS/gti for sale one here recently for fair money.

Probably not what you're after, but I've always wanted a go in one of those road-legal buggies. Must be fun up to around 50?

can't remember the last time I saw an R5 on the road!
not to mention a mk1 clio.
if its a small budget you're not likely to afford a 106 or a 306 rallye that is either worth having, or that wont swallow all your cash making it worth having.
plenty of saxo vtr's and 106 gti's still about, mostly tired and bodged to hell, but often really cheap so just break it when you've had your fun

Not specifically a Retro but what about a Suzuki Swift Sport? REALLY good fun to drive and they go quite well. Tiff Needell rates them as one of his favourite hatches so they can't be that bad.

Rumour has it that the owner has just bought a BMW Mini though Don't suppose it's a red one in the Linton area? I keep seeing one at the cross roads. Well, I've only seen it 3 times but considering how often I am an over your way that's quite a lot. Also saw a S2 cab joining the M20 by the Audi dealership in the week as well. I did wonder if it was mine but seeing where you are and where I am I doubt it would be mine you're seeing.

Citroen AX ? (same running gear as 106/Saxo but in a smaller lighter body = BIG improvement in power-to-weight ratio ) Small, great in corners, top speed makes it difficult to get "instant ban" type speeding tickets. What's not to like Numbers are dropping very quickly so grab one while you can if it's something you want to try www.axoc.co.uk/phpBB3/
