Hi all, since my Renault traffic is now sold and with its new owner I thought I had better start one of my Bongo fleet. This one is quite rare as its a manual gearbox and 4 wheel drive. She's been stood a while so will need a full service. So far I have repaired the split charge system, replaced the main battery, cleaned and sterilised the water system and fully valeted the interior. She has a problem with the stop solenoid in as much as she wont stop once started and she is lacking boost so there's a couple of issues to sort. Anyways she should be done by the end of the week and up for sale.

Not got much done on the Bongo today as I have been doing a corsa diesel timing chain. Had an hour sorting out the gear lever gaiter on the Bongo as it was badly split and torn at the top. As it had about 2 inches of spare material I was able to cut the torn and damaged part of the top then redo the seams at a sharper taper to maintain the hole size in the top. Lastly I added a seam to the top so a small tie wrap can be threaded through to pull the top tight once fitted. Only a small job but it improves the interior quite a bit. Cheers - mike

Have been pottering about with the Bongo today.
She's now serviced and the new stop solenoid is fitted so she now starts and stops just as she should.
Not had any success tracking down the boost leak yet but I can hear it leaking but not find it.
Got a bit of work to do on the wiring this afternoon as I have removed a dodgy old alarm.
cheers - mike

A possible way to trace a boost leak is soapy water in a spray bottle, squirt it about and watch for bubbles Ttfn Glenn

Hi there
thanks for the tip. I usually use leak detector spray, the same as I use for checking gas systems.
I'm going to have a look at the egr this morning as I think it may be stuck open.
Hope to at least have it diagnosed.
If it is stuck I will clean it and disable it.
Hope to get up to north yorkshire in it tomorrow to enjoy the good weather.
Cheers - mike

I finished and sold the Black Bongo last week. The boost leak was sorted by repairing the elbow on the end of the inlet manifold. It had been fitted without a gasket.I also fitted an egr blank and disabled the egr whilst I was at it. Got my next one to start later. Its going to have a genuine Mazda rear kitchen fitted, plus new roof bed, improved rear electrics and a few other odds and sods. First job is to give it a thorough clean inside as its minging. Cheers - mike

I get through 3-4 a month depending on how i'm feeling.I have lung cancer so some days are better than others. I only buy in decent vehicles to start with, not into welding and painting these days. Have just finished wet vacuuming the interior of the latest one.Got a huge amount of curse word out even though it looked fairly presentable. Have also removed the nearside rear seat and trim panel and trial fitted the kitchen unit. I have the wiring to sort, electric blind switch to re locate and water and gas to sort. I should have it all done by the end of the week as I want to go up to Richmond fly fishing in it on Saturday.

Got the kitchen unit fitted this afternoon. All the wiring is done, battery meter,12v sockets and feed for water pump all in. Got to pick up a gas bottle, regulator and pipe and a water pump and single switched tap tomorrow. The unit needs a bit of work as well as its fairly flimsy plus I may make some new doors for it. cheers - mike

Connected up the gas, water and electrics in the kitchen unit yesterday and gave her a run out to Lincoln for a picnic lunch with my daughter.
Gave her a wash this morning ready for a few viewings and had her sold by 4pm for the full asking.
Got a black one to do next week but no rush as I have an a4 cabriolet to do as well. It needs a new roof, electrics, brakes, wheels and tires, mot and service. Hopefully done in time for Friday as I'm off to Scarborough for the weekend.
Cheers - mike

Just bought a van for my next full conversion project.
Its a 2007 Citroen dispatch hi-roof,very good spec so ideal for a camper conversion.
The layout will be similar to the Renault Traffic I did.Side conversion, rock and roll bed, smev hob and sink, compressor fridge, mains hook up etc.
No rush on this one as its a fill in job between other projects plus I need a van for running around in.
Cheers - mike

And another one! Picked up another Bongo earlier today. Its got a very good quality side conversion with hob,sink,240v hook up,fridge and rock and roll bed. Its just passed its test without any major issues but needs tlc. Its has quite a few electrical gremlins to sort, new cambelt and service plus some body work issues. It is however very sound mechanically and structurally. Hopefully complete in 2 weeks. Cheers - mike

How easy it it to get parts for Bongos, and to get them insured? With them being 'grey', are the insurers not a little wary?

Hi there
parts are very asy to get, all the service stuff comes from the motor factors and there's lots of specialist breakers.
Insurance is not a problem at all as they are identical to a Ford Freda which was sold in the uk.
There can be a problem when they are converted to a camper though but using a specialist insurer like Adrian Flux usually sorts it.

I hope there's a frame inside the wardrobe to mount the seat belt top loop from?

Have started work on my latest Bongo. Spent the morning cleaning and repairing the interior. The high level cupboard was loose and badly fitted so I stripped it and improved the profile were it meets the roof. Its now refitted and completely secure. Removed and cleaned the fridge as it was alive! also fitted it properly into the unit and secured it. Made a new mains lead for it and fired up the on-board 240v electrics, all of which seem fine. The 12v system needs work though as the radio and lights all work of the main battery. A new feed needs to be made into the fuse box, fuse 8. Cleaned the upper bed and repaired the tent to roof fixings as they had pulled away. Will be removing all the dodgy stickers on the outside this afternoon and assessing what body work needs doing. Cheers - mike

Spent the afternoon pottering on the Bongo
Have done some repairs to the wiring and re-wired the interior lights and radio to run off the leisure battery.
Had an hour with the hot air gun removing the multitude of stickers. Lots on the rear wings had been laquered over so have left a mark. All in all she's pretty sound, good doors, sill and front wings. There's two areas of rot at the top of each screen pillar which is a common spot plus the rear arches are getting a bit rough. Not sure what to do with them yet, either grind them back, wels in some new metal and fill and paint or just cut them out and fit new arches.Sprinter rear arches are a good match and I have fitted them before.
It all depends on the return really, she's likely to sell for £4000 with the arches as they are or close to £5000 with them done so will have to see.
Cheers - mike
