I can vouch for how surprisingly quick the 1.8T models are as I've been driving one since the beginning of the year. They also have a speed activated rear spoiler (between the top of the hatch and back of the roof) which is about as near to a Porsche as it gets I'm thinking of selling mine now as I'm getting too old for 'low and loud' and now need to do some wafting in a luxo barge.

Having clicked the soft top option for a hire car in Portugal I was given a modern cabrio Beetle. It was really nice so I did some digging and was amazed how cheap the original FWD beetles are. I think they are in the unfashionable price valley, they have depreciated to nothing and haven't started to climb as modern classics.
I think they are a great base to have a play with. Parts are widely available, no scene tax, no rust, cheap, lots of ideas from what's been done to original Beetles over the years. No worries about spoiling/devaluing a rare classic.
Okay not much storage space but this isn't Retro Campers - you can stick your weekly shop on the rear seats. In fact you could just remove the rear seats and build a carpet covered box and have an extremely generously spaced 2 seater. Even better with a cabrio.

Just a quick note about the lack of boot space. My one has a fold down rear seat (the base even pulls up and forward to ensure a level load space) which vastly improves the amout of available room (I'm not sure if this is model specific though). VW also thought to provide a place to hold the rear head rests when the rear seat is folded down! Here's one of my current favourites -

I was thinking about all this new shape old shape malarkey this week. I guess people need to see the, as modern cars with lines that hark back to good, no great times in your memories. But they are ultimately what they are and a bit Marmite, so if they do not fall in your line of love, then buy an alternative. I like the new Mini, in early shape, but the latest harvest......?? Naaahhh. Fiat 500L etc..... ? Naaahhh.... New Beetle in latest form..... ohhh yesss, but I do not see an original Beetle there, just a great evolution. PS. I still want one to mod. New old shapes, calling on iconic heritage.... I'm strangely drawn to the S Type Jaguar once I give up my company hack... In diesel form probably a decent mileage muncher?

The best one I ever saw was in a photo in Volksworld, just as the original one had come out. It was bright white, lowered at the front only and running adaptors to put 5x205 pcd 15" BRM wheels on it. A modern interpretation of the original Greg Aronson '63 Cal Looker.
Other than that, my favourite was Rudy Olivenca's tube framed, rear engined, aircooled and turbo'd drag car.

I want to like that, but I just don't. For me, for some strange reason it just doesn't work! However, on the whole the new Beetle I quite like, especially the convertable My feeling is that they're probably very adequate like a Golf, but they've got a pretty party frock on! Plus, they're at a point now where they're fairly cheap, and no doubt they've got a heck of an aftermarket following, so spares, or mods won't be a problem!

I quite like them myself, although they do feel a bit odd sitting in the driving seat with the winscreen about five miles away! But I guess you'd get used to it!

Same question, different car. I saw this yesterday at Pepper Hill Sainsbury’s carpark. Self employed, mobile mechanic driving it. Car made me stop him to chat and take a photo. Just seems to have the right look to me. Rear seats removed, turning it into a small van for his business. I will start a separate thread on these in a moment as well, but suspect the older ones could be ready for some silly treatment and simple Retro usage. New Beetles seem to be about a lot these days, many very cheap. On FB of course it always feels like the advertising has something to hide. I guess I got lucky with the Berlingo.

BTTT for this one...
Does anyone know how noisy these are (road and wind noise?)
Also, how tricky to get into for an older chap? (NOT me, how dare you sir!) my dad is old, looking for something to replace the MR2. I'm guessing seats are suitably higher than the MR2, but do the sill extensions get in the way?
Worried about the noise as it bothers his hearing aids.

Cheers pistonpopper, I'll have a read through. Dad's had to stop driving, and I'm returning all those "taxi" favours he did for me when I was a kid. He is really struggling with the low seats of the Toymota, I could just buy a Golf/Polo/Fiesta/whatever but would prefer something with some kind of character Also, new beetles make good cars for audio, so I'll have to replace roundabout fun with music

I think the ultimate question is can you make a sand rail out of one?

I think the ultimate question is can you make a sand rail out of one? Please don't mention sand rails! I've always wanted my own full-size "Rough Rider" or "Super Champ"!!! In fact, I think if I can find a nice blue 1.8t or V5 Beetle, I'd try a "Sand Scorcher" replica, but lowered not raised. Not my favourite Tamiya from my youth, but it'll do. It could be a project for the kids I work with as well.
