Another random-ish question thread. I keep seeing these cheapish New Beetles on my FB feed. Similar to the Berlingo, they are bicycle money. I suspect that most have got more wrong than the adds imply. However........ Are they just a Golf in a posh frock mechanically? Could a transplant from a Golf work? Etc Etc Etc. Surely at this sort of money they are ripe for silly mods like roller paint in Nato Cammo green with stencils. Or a variety of other silly themes. Go on...... opinions.

There's a reason they are the same price as an equivalent Mk4, they are one and the same, and just as curse word.

yes, much like the tt, a golf in a different dress with poor boot space and rear headroom, other than that normal vw fare.
pq34 platform:
Audi A3 Mk1 (8L) Audi TT Mk1 (8N) Volkswagen Golf Mk4 (1J) Volkswagen Bora (1J) Volkswagen Lavida Volkswagen New Beetle (1C/1Y/9C) SEAT León Mk1 (1M) SEAT Toledo Mk2 (1M) Škoda Octavia Mk1 (1U) Škoda Roomster Mk1 (5J)

The missus had one a few years ago and I loved it .It did feel like driving a goldfish bowl but that made it bright and airy ,probably due to the bright yellow everywhere inside .Typical mk4 golf build quality and identical mechanicals so should be cheap as chips to fix .2.0 petrol was pretty gutless and the 1.6 is really bad 1.8t would be the one to have if you can find a cheapy. the only issues we had were minor electrical gremlins ,windows ,central locking. if I was after a cheap runaround id pick one over a golf everytime.

There is a mark green one for sale at the moment on some pretty cool wheels and interior. I will have to have a look for it. I think they made one of these with the R32 engine from factory which I think is pretty cool.
Although I own one of these with a roof chop (mk1 3.2 TT) I don't think I could drive the beetle, despite them being pretty cool. I sold my van to a chap who had a US import on Fuchs.

If they are that cheap it could be fun to use one to make a contemporary version of a vintage Type 1 racer. Like this one. Or this one. Or...

I actually like these beetles, a guilty pleasure haha I remember seeing one years ago in custom car that was awesome, it was a pro street one in orange running 9's or something with a big block in. The dash is so big that it didnt have to be modified for the engine to fit, it had its full interior still and flower pot! Think is was from canada, cant find any pics of it though, may still have the mag somewhere. If I wounldnt get beaten by the misses I would be tempted to get one to mess around with.

They stuck a spoiler on it, otherwise you wouldn't know whether it was coming or going.

On our 2nd one. 2l is absolutely wibblepoo, plaugued with problems. Got a pd100 version with a remap now, missus drives daily. Uses sod all fuel, pd engines are lovely to drive.
Usual mk4 fobles, every bush imaginable, window regs and door locks. Interior finish wears off like mk4. Also like the mk4, good (not great, but good) chassis, reliable if pd or 1.8t, cheap on parts, and platform based so everything swaps. Biast because i love mk4 golfs, but the beetle is good. And takes 'the treatment' very well.

My Ex-Wife had one, it was a horrible thing to drive and/or work on. As I understand it, it's just a mk4 golf under Beetle clothing. So nothing is get-at-able! In terms of driving, it was completely uninspiring and you have got no idea where the corners of it are when parking either. Hers was a 2.0 8v automatic which drank fuel like it was going out of fashion too - not much better mpg than my Jag XKR....
But they can look funky as the pictures go to show
EDIT: She traded it in a few months ago, with MOT and about 80k miles for £500

who the actual F wants a vase on the dash??? Holds the skinny ecigs as well though lol I had a 2001 1.6 for a short time (Mrs got pregnant pretty much straight after buying it lol) Apart from a few electrical gremlins (mk4 platform issues) it was quite fun, 2.0 & 1.6 are about 5-10bhp difference but the 1.6 is a bit better on fuel. You can get them with a 2.3 v5 for 5 pot noise.

These have become a guilty pleasure. When new I never cared too much but knew of a brand new one locally that had been smoothed an stick whacked. Should I replace the Seicento with one?

I like them, and think they're very cool, being a tight-ass I've been outbid on several in the past couple of months!

They're a MK4 Golf with no boot space, a smaller engine bay, an interior that is finally exposing it's structure and a reputation diminished from trendy-feminine to... well you decide - above all, they're as heavy as a Ford Granada, so pick one with a strong engine and expect it to be boring to drive.

Certainly in driving terms, i'd rather have a PD diesel than a petrol. I've not owned one but a couple of my customers have them, one is on her 3rd and has finally got the one she wanted to start with, a diesel convertible. She loves it and I don't mind driving it at all. I'm confident enough in my sexuality to not care about the flower vase! A lot better and much more frugal than her last 2 litre petrol one.
