Midland Performance & Retro this sooooo makes me grin madly. What is a Cat N these days? Not financially viable to repair? Love the idea of 220bhp too.

Most older cat N are because it's cheaper for the insurance company to write it off than fix it. They pay out below market value, auction the car off & it's only cost them the difference.
If they repaired it, then there are the admin cost's, repair costs, hire vehicle costs.
Back when it was cat C/D - I have seen old cars that are cat C's with a cracked bumper & a under 6 month old cat D's with most of in front of the bulkhead ripped off.

I'm interested please post a few pics OK, so a while back I bought a project car blind, which turned out to be completely scrap, but before it turned up, I'd already got the whole thing planned out in my mind, and stupidly I'd already ordered over 5 litres of paint for it. So for months now, I'd been half looking for something else which I thought would look good in said colour. I spotted a low mileage Beetle Convertible 1.8T 20V (180BHP) at my local Copart. It had been registered Cat N, but god knows why, as the only damage was a crack on the NSR wheel arch (a plastic bolt-on panel) and a scratch on the rear bumper. It was a nice spec with full leather, electric everything, air con, heated seats etc etc. Anyway, it turned up and aside from the damage, it was unmarked apart from 2 small dings on the passenger door. In the glovebox was FSH and a plenty of receipts. It had even been recently serviced and a cambelt and water pump fitted. It also had 4 excellent matching Bridgestone tyres and no notable issues aside from needing a new O2 Sensor, a rear parking sensor and a NSR electric window regulator. All easily sorted. Anyway, I thought silver was a bit of a boring colour for a "fun" design like the Beetle, and the paint I had would make it stand out more. I can also safely tune these up to just shy of 220BHP with minimal outlay, so all in all, a fun, quick little car for not much money. So, the strip down for its full colour change begins..... A good second hand NSR wheel arch sourced for Β£25 posted, and absolutely no damage whatsoever remains once this is swapped and the rear bumper repainted. Nothing was touched underneath. Most older cat N are because it's cheaper for the insurance company to write it off than fix it. They pay out below market value, auction the car off & it's only cost them the difference. If they repaired it, then there are the admin cost's, repair costs, hire vehicle costs. Ahhh, thanks joem83 Kinda potluck then I guess. My S10 was a CatC or D which certainly does/did not bother me.

Cat N...Non structural damage
Cat S...Structural damage.

Midland Performance & Retro this sooooo makes me grin madly. What is a Cat N these days? Not financially viable to repair? Love the idea of 220bhp too. As has already been said, in theory Cat N is non-structural damage, so cosmetic only and Cat S is structural damage, but in practice the vehicles are hardly ever inspected closely enough to make an accurate judgement, so in practice it still pretty much works the way as the old Cat D and Cat C, where Cat D was estimated repair costs as 50% plus of the vehicle's value and Cat C as 100% or more of the vehicle's value. Then, depending on the insurance company they may or may not add in the costs of storage, admin, hire cars etc etc, plus some insurers works on a "fixed cost" repair deal with their partnered repairers, so one insurance company I know has this fixed at Β£1100. So, if a car has a claim for a scratch, the cost to repair is Β£1100. If a car has been rolled and every panel is battered to heck, the cost to repair is Β£1100, so some cars will be written off for nothing and some cars will escape being written off despite being badly damaged. I've always used the example as a MINI I used to have as being the stupidest "write-off" I'd seen for a minor dent in the bonnet, but I think this Beetle has to beat even that.

Iβd always wanted a βnewβ Beetle for some strange reason, but itβs one car Iβd never owned, until just nowβ¦.. Itβs a bit new for this parish (54 plate), but got a few plans for it, so can update this if thereβs any interest. I'm interested please post a few pics Project is now complete and will be looking for a new home, although I will be using it in the meantime as I have the roof down on convertibles in any weather as long as it's not pouring down with rain, plus the heated seats are very good! Nothing mad like a pick-up or modern Baja recreation, but been a fun little project, is a brilliant little car and I think going for a very bright and in your face hue adds a lot of vibrancy to it, which is more in keeping with the Beetle lineage than a sober silver.

I took a deposit on it last week on the basis of putting a fresh MOT on it (now done) and delivering it to Nottingham, which I'm just trying to find the time to do!

Good work on putting the beetle back to more subtle.
I hate questioning peoples decisions and builds.
Why are the Passats headlights tinted yellow?
They are terrible to have behind you in the dark or approaching you.

Good work on putting the beetle back to more subtle. I hate questioning peoples decisions and builds. Why are the Passats headlights tinted yellow? They are terrible to have behind you in the dark or approaching you. A reason for yellow lights . Another theory is that yellow lights were thought to be easier on the oncoming driversβ eyes and penetrated fog and rain better. An Academy of Sciences report based on a 1934 study by 'several doctors' stated: βThe observations made by users, and particularly those who have a scientific education, show that a projected yellow light dazzles less than white light and that the re-adaption of the eye after facing the glare is notably diminished. The yellow light gives rise to a lower rate of reflected light in fog or mist, or on liquid droplets during rain. It seems to reduce eye fatigue.β When i raced motorbikes in the rain/very dull days , iβd use a Yellow or Orange visor as it helped with definition .

Good replies thank you.
I like the look too.
Keep in mind I have created a few questionable mods in my time.
Sometimes understanding motivations helps a lot.

I still need to Amber the indicators and side repeaters
