Hi everyone. Time to upload the progress of my latest stupid venture. Got this clio beginning of last year and have only just started to enjoy it. It was blocked in my mates garage by another clio that we were swapping the engine into another clio infront of. Lots of white clios then! It got the lowering and Renault 19s on it the same day it passed the mot. Had to change the Heater Matrix, bit of a pig to do but managed it in an evening. Been using it as a nice slow daily getting 44 mpg. Just so so slow. I have been gathering bits for an F4R conversion. So it begins.

Starting with removing all of this Alternator bracket from an F series block from the volvo 400 range And a nice male/female threaded adjuster means i only have crank, water pump and alternator 172 owners have reported good torque gains from removing the power steering and air con, we shall see.

Much research on which gearbox i can use went on, mainly to do with this I needed a gearbox with a mechanical speed drive, so I researched what would fit with help from turborenault.com and i ended up with a box from a dci. Turns out i got a later one without the hole and part i need. So i have a large paperweight. This is problem number 1. Number 2 is regarding which belt length i needed for the alternator. first attempt second attempt. I now have what i think is correct but havnt fitted it. (for reference ive got a 5pk 850)

New clutch on the engine as the original had a bent finger and just looked a bit ropey. And I also sourced a proper 172 gearbox, so it will fit and give full acceleration. Most importantly it has the speed drive i needed.

Hopefully wed evening ill get a chance to bolt everything up and get it on its wheels again. Then i can start the really fun part of trying to get it to work. I have gone for a phase 2 172 engine and ecu system giving me the added complication of cable less throttle, interior UCH and imobiliser. I have everything i need i think, but it'll still be difficult. Fuel system will also be a headache i think, as its a facelift model engine it has the fuel pressure regulator in the tank, not on the rail. Will have a think about this one.

Got this all bolted up mechanically last night Selector needed swapping from the 172 gearbox (left( to the one I originally had (right) to make sure the gearstick worked as it should. Plenty of room still, but need the battery and ecu putting in. Made for it. Bonnet doesnt quite close. Just need to remove some of the strengthening underneath and itll be good to go. Like a normal 1.2 Catching just on the front edge of the manifold. Plumbing and wiring next.

My first car was a red 1.2 Oasis. Dutch license plate was SL TJ 10 - so it was quickly named Sletje10. Little Slvt10 ;-) Had loads of fun with it. Think it's about the only car I had mixed feelings when it was replaced for new car

Crikey - does it just go in on the same mounts? That was quick!

The gearbox body is the same so i was able to swap the rear mount over. Top gearbox mount from 172, only misses on one hole. I can live with that. Also came with the front gearbox mount which Renault kindly left a hole for in the chassis. The other mount is on the top of the head, which the hole pattern for is the same as the original mount, so that was swapped over aswell. Driveshafts are fine for the gearbox (as its in the same relative position). Some people put the front mount on aswell, but i don't have one, so i wont be doing that untill it proves it needs it.

I'm mainly looking forward to having a clio that can keep up with the crowd. I loved being in it. But the engine was embarasing. So excited!

Single fuel line made up, ready to go to the 172 pump/sender/fpr in tank. Also managed to finish my alternator adjuster. This is what ive ended up with. Its adjustable and it works. Good enough for me. And a realistic view of the finished look. Lots of little bits left to do, but getting there. Mark
