I follow a lot of Facebook car pages and the amount of older cars being stolen is worrying. A lot seem to be stolen by gangs, and towed away. I'm starting to think of ways to make my car as hard as possible to steal. There's a lot of expensive old fords and vws going missing, whilst at the moment I don't think my e30 would be a target, it does worry me as they are slowly becoming rarer and prices are going up which may eventually make it a target.
Overnight my company van blocks it in but during the day it's sat on the drive. I'm thinking about two things, one, something like a wheel clamp to stop anyone dragging it off the drive and onto a low loader, and two, something to stop to being started.
My lass has an e36 and on that it has a coded key and the car won't start without it. As far as I'm aware my older e30 just has a plain key which means it has the potential to be hotwired. I'm thinking either get an immobiliser or make my own hidden switch so that car won't start without it being activated.
Has anyone got any thoughts on my ideas and theft prevention in general?

Wheel clamp is a good idea, also worth considering is a decent stop-lok (think I spelt that right?) for the steering wheel, and even a handbrake/gearstick lock. Depending on how much you want to spend, a tracker is also a good investment as even having a sticker in the window saying that one is fitted would put off some would-be thieves.
I'm in the same position as mine is currently on the driveway, so try and make it as awkward as possible - such as parking it at an angle to the road if space on your drive will allow, so that it can't simply be dragged straight onto a trailer/low-loader.
Also helps to have decent neighbours, I've got quite a few elderly neighbours who are at home during the day, so any unusual activity will result in curtain-twitching

You are best having something physical and visible with something electronic. A disc lok , wheel clamp, parking post or similar and an imobiliser/alarm on the car. I've used Hawk alarms products in the past for alarm/imobilisers www.hawkcaralarm.com/ Good value and technical help.

A Rottweiler in the footwell with an elastic band on its willy. *n reply deleted. And this one. Errm no. I often try to work out what folk were thinking when I see odd situations they got themselves into - I refuse to ask this time! Disklock (yellow) Big, visible, and too much bother to remove. The only problem is - it's a chunky thing to have in the car when you're driving. Tip - later ones have the lock built in and are easier to use than earlier (with seperate lock) www.disklokuk.co.uk/shop/disklok/

No type of wheel clamp will stop it being loaded on a truck, a good quality pop up security post will as it will be too much effort and noisy to remove the pos. the advice about parking it at an angle will put off most 'drive by thefts' as again it will take time to move it . Most that get stolen are parted so although a immobiliser will stop a drive off theft it again won't stop a tow truck and won't make any difference to it being parted. A well hidden self powered tracker is about the only way to ensure the car is found.

Crook lok on any car of any age. I sold a very well kept escort once, crook lok every time without fail for 2 years, however, I had cleaned the car out ready to hand over the next morning... Including taking out the lok... Yeah, it got nicked that night. Unbelievable.
If mine is layed up for a bit, I take the driver's seat out, 5 minutes work and vital engine components may be disconnected and/or removed. The steering is always locked towards a wall or kerb and crookloked. Only the Hulk can dead steer a 6 series whilst pushing it. The cars are also covered by security camera. I am investing in a wheel clamp as I think it's a great visual deterrent. Good neighbours as said, helps too as mine don't miss a trick, they won't say a word to any crook during the act but will reliably inform me in great detail a few days after the event. But none of this is much use if you're followed somewhere so I have a habit of checking who's frequently behind me/ unusual vehicles hanging around. (All those years of checking for old bill served a purpose eventually)
If they want it, they'll get it. Trick is to make it an 'adventure' and a 'journey' for them to remember.
Although great in theory, technically handbrake to gear shift locks can easily be removed by pulling the gear knob off, so check that can't happen.

I used to have one of those disc locks, but I gave it away. I seen a video example of an ex professional thief and he could open one in 5 seconds, scarey stuff. I quite like the idea of a post on the driveway, and an immobiliser.
I have done loads of stuff to stop anyone getting at my motorcycles but the downside is it takes me about half an hour to get a bike out now if I fancy a ride.

The South Africans have a lot of anti car jacking devices, surely some of those could be used in theft protection?
I believe one was flamethrowers from under the drivers door...

My alarm has also got a tilt sensor, if they try to lift the car the alarm will go off. Hopefully this will be enough to get a neighbours attention. Also has removable steering wheel.

A car parked on full lock with a removable steering wheel is a great option. Is it expensive for clip off wheel?

I wouldn't buy cheap ebay rubbish to connect my steering wheel to my car! A decent quality NRG one is around £100 on the internet.

I've got posts on my drive. There about £90 in machine mart. There are cheaper ones on eBay.
With the steering lock. Is it recommend to turn the wheel into the wall or something so can't even just push it in a straight line? Or can that leave strain on the steering of turned for days at a time?
