Building a hot head for my 1971 Alfa giulia.
But I have a problem that might be solved by Subaru valve buckets........ the BMW valves I have in, have a larger shim gap.
The shim range by Alfa is not big enough for what I'm doing. but Subaru buckets are thicker and also available with inbuilt shims.
I've heard that Subaru cam buckets (both the type with and without shims) will fit.
IF ANYONE HERE HAS SOME VALVE BUCKETS THEY CAN MEASURE FOR ME ? I'm after the internal diameter (hoping for 33mm) and the external diameter (hoping for 35mm). I understand that they are about 24mm tall (Alfa ones are 25mm).
Can anyone let me know ?

Can't you grind 1mm off the top of the valvestem or the underneath of the bucket?

Cheers incar
Johnny, there's no rocker on Alfa twincam, so it's due to shorter valve that needs deeper buckets, or larger than Alfa standard shims

Ok. I fully realise there is no rocker,it's bucket and shim with the cam riding on the shim. I was thinking the valves were too long and you couldn't get thin enough shims. So, in a way, your issue is easier to resolve 🙂 What is the thickest shim you can get? Early Vw Golfs had solid lifter heads prior to swapping over to hydraulic lifters. Thickest shim, but stand to be corrected was, I think 4,25mm. Diameter wise they are about that diameter. If Vw used them,so would have Audi. Makes me think that possibly Porche 924/944 might use them as well?. Audi in the 1970's used a bucket arrangement with a tapered screw for adjustment. Weird arrangement with the tapered section having two parallel flats ground on them, that the top of the valve stem rode on. Could work but was a real pain in the Glutemus maximum as it was cams out to adjust.
Another option would be to get thicker shims made.

If you can make sense of the below well done. I put this together to determine what route I needed to go down. The VW shim plus smallest Alfa shim was way too big. As stated at the beginning biggest Alfa shim wasn't big enough. I knew my valve to cam clearance was bigger than 5.22 but less than 7.40mm. So after buying a 3.250 and 3.500 shim I managed to ascertain I needed CatCams C007 bucket, which has a slightly thicker bucket depth of 3.9mm vs the standard buckets 3.225mm. So these buckets are on order and combined with the 2.675 to 3.225mm shims will see me putting this problem to bed. I've attached the spreadsheet for other members future headache removal, so they can refer to this and work out what solution they can work....... whilst maintaining the standard alfa shim range....... or change vales to another car.
