Don't know what that's is, drained the oil and was very dark and filled with swarf. Is the swarf magnetic? not that it matters if your changing the box just interested for next time the question comes up on a forum, when you fit the new box fill it with fresh oil, VW have had issue with 2nd gear syncro for years, there are a few updated oils to use, have a google of golf 2nd gear issues and there are many recomended oils, best bet is to change slow into 2nd when cold to protect the already weak syncro on that gear. The stabiliser is a lower engine mount that stops the engine twisting when the clutch bites, IIRC it's by the diff and has a plate with 3 bolts holding it on and 1 bolt though a rubber bush Honestly couldn't say as I didn't check and the oil is gone now.

It's in a mk1 caddy but the engine is from a ahu 97 mk3 golf, I have got another box so just as precaution will swap it. Thanks for the advice guys. Linkage, I just bought a MK3 golf and it sometimes kicks me out of 5th. Gearbox pulls fine, works a little better now I've taken the surround off. So I can assume something was in your case, interfering with the linkage or the linkage itself just decided to work a little better than usual. As has already been said by some members on here.

If your stabalizer is bad or the peddle box bent it can damage the cables effecting the throw from first to second ( not so much third to fourth for some reason )
The syncro doesnt always engage 100% every time causing damage to the syncro itself....
worn linkage/balls on rod shift also can creat this problem..
Once you have fitted your replacement box as said above drain and replace correct transmission oil and make sure all the transmission linkages etc are fresh clean and well lubricated....
I would also dive in and make sure the peddle box isnt cracked twisted or bent as they are week....

What bortaf is talking about is what I'm on about. But swarf sounds like a box swap is the way to go. Check out opieoils website for gearbox oil should be plenty of choice for you
