I have struggled to describe how I'd like my Viva wagon to be like without saying 'the rat look'. So I usually just say I'm keeping the patina. I like derelict and I shall use it in conversation more often. I had originally planed that I would restore the wagon with nice paint and all but when I finally started working on it I decided (mainly due to a total lack of money) that I would just do the bare minimum to get it through a test and on the road. However I just couldnt help myself when it came to the engine bay.. I have an ever so slight OCD thing about messy engine bays and as soon as I started my quest for a neater bay it got out of hand quickly. I agree with and enjoy seeing a proper derelict car being used daily. There are heaps around here in NZ due to the climate and lack of road salt. My original home district of Marlborough has the oldest average age of cars in NZ due to very dry climate and very tight old folk who see no real reason in getting rid of a car if its still working fine. This attitude I like muchly. Car pics for thread... My Uncle Jim, RIP, who for years bombed around the lanes of Surrey near Reigate in his SSS Datsun. He ran it on a shoestring budget, knew exactly how little it needed as he was a very gifted trade mechanic (worked building chassis for John Cooper at one point). He didn't really care how the car looked just as long as it went well. I think Datman ended up with this car. Some random old ute in NZ....

Found it! I couldn't remember what thread I'd seen this in but this also is beautiful and amazing. From the Spotted Thread. I have been looking for a picture of the Lark with the LS engine in - looks very similar to this one, a little straighter and another example if a derelict. I approve of this thread. P. Not sure but this one has a 6.0 LS in it. He has the other fenders those are some fiber ones he put in for racing. (It also graces an article in Grassroots Motorsports this month about cheap car racing) All rights to the photographer on the hood of their Berkeley.

Not the one I was thinking of but a good example. I was looking through some photos I took at the spring nats from about 5-6 years ago, pretty sure I will find them but in the meantime I have started looking for a Lark on eBay... dangerous..... I think my mate Toby's MGA fits in the ethos of this thread... 1959-mga-roadster-restorationIts getting all repaired and painted underneath, but will hit the road looking just like that. -Steve-

Heres a pic of my old ital van i do miss this one Matches my One Ton, at least when it was new... Here's a picture of my mates one which has been repainted in its original Southern Electric livery and has a replica ladder rack on top, it gives an idea what I'm aiming for with the Series III one.

I'm having a hard time combining the word derelict with new, uprated underpinnings, in my head. I suppose because I'm so used to seeing actual derelict cars, ones that have lain up for years, be dragged out and recommissioned without any running gear changes. Ostensibly from the US scenes and vintage people in the UK, and as you said there's no shouting about it, it's just dragging that old car and getting it going again. Putting the high performance/modern driveline in is much more in keeping with the original hot rod ethos. As are the shiny wheels, even if they are flats, steels or chrome hubcaps, which all just stand out and point towards it not being "derelict" at all. However I fully agree that "rat look" has become a caricature of itself. I would posit that my Skoda Favorit 136LS was a "derelict" car when I began with it But it was pictured on forums over here after being spotted in the carpark at a modified show, and labelled "the first rat-look car in NI". I never claimed it to be rat-look, I just wanted to build something stupid, but looking back at the evolution of the genre I can see how it very much signalled the way that "rat look" was heading. If I were defining the term, which I am not, I would say that to be derelict means that when parked in a carpark, care must be taken to ensure the police do not put an 'abandoned car' notice on it. or if on your own drive, the neighbours curtains are at full twitch. which is exactly where this other Favorit was However I don't care that much about definitions, and I don't want to ruin your nice thread, which I am quite enjoying. I like and appreciate every car posted so far, regardless of what people want to label them up as. I will not apologise for the amount of Skoda content in this post. Nor will I apologise for posting pictures of daverapid 's Estelle, which is and has been a benchmark for this kind of thing for a few years now, whether or not the genre was there to put it at the top of
