The owner is a lucky man. I see far too many cases where people hand over their car to a body shop and it sits in the corner for years with little if any work getting done. You on the other hand seem to have his best interest in mind. Thanks. I have restored cars for my own use over the years but I am slowly moving towards doing this for others. I don't do this as a full time job (got one of those already π). I do it for fun and earn a small amount which in reality only covers my costs. I am driven to get the projects done as I only have space for one car at a time and hate having stuff hanging around. Not relying on the income is a good situation to be in as I only do what interests me. I am already looking forward to the next project which will be starting this summer.π If you are interested check out my blog site below. Www.redhouseclassics.comI am pretty much in the same boat. I found out that once I helped one hapless MGB owner with his project, there was a floodgate of others wanting work done. I have vowed to stay away from " customer cars" until the P1800ES shelled Miata is finished.

You on the other hand seem to have his best interest in mind. Tell me about it. I left my Midget with a local body shop and curse word all was done to in the three and a half it sat there. In the end I paid him for what he had done and transported it home. When I looked at the welding it was an absolute mess so threw the towel in and ended up selling it to a part time mechanic who had a workshop to do the repairs in. Bought myself a Marlin Roadster Kit Car a few weeks later to get away from rusty bodywork.

Thanks guys for your interest in this build and also my website. So the primer was flatted back and the low spots filled and rubbed level. Several more coats of epoxy primer were then added and the process repeated. After this was flatted it was finally time to start thinking about the top coat. The Midget will be painted in the original colour of Brooklands Green. First off the door shuts, edges and gaps were painted with a small spray gun. After this I sprayed 4 coats of top coat over the whole car. The finish is not perfect with a small amount of orange peel and the odd bit of dust which I expected. These will flat out before the final polish after time has been given for the lacquer to harden fully. I am pleased with the result as you can see my shadow giving the thumbs up below.

Does look like good work considering what you have to work with.

No probs. Yes it was sprayed in my dusty old shop. It will be an acceptable finish when it is rubbed down and polished although never a show car. This was never the intention. ππ

Excellent work there! I have no mechanical or restorative abilities whatsoever so had my Midget 1500 done by a pro around 12 years ago... ...bumpers removed and suspension dropped an inch too. A new Heritage shell was used (cheating, I know).

Very nice ^ So the top coat was given a week to harden then the work began. The whole car was rubbed down by hand with 2000 wet and dry paper and machine buffed to a shine using Farecela G3. This was very time consuming, arm aching and boring work. I usually put some music on and let my mind wander⦠As you can see assembly has begun with the engine and gearbox being fitted as one unit. A new 3 piece clutch and slave cylinder were also fitted. A job that makes a massive difference to the overall look of the car is fitting the grill and lights which were done today. I am struggling to get the windscreen to body seal to fit properly so this is now held under compression with a couple of ratchet straps with the desperate idea this may help. I have started on the interior and have half fitted the carpets. This job is next on the list to complete. Once the doors are built up I will be able to fit the door cards and seats. The interior will then be finished. The engine should be up and running next weekend so this is something to look forward to. If no problems occur the car should be ready in around 3 weeks.

That looks great, and the grille is definitely the best of the bunch. Really fancy one of these one day, and they look much better without bumpers!
