Hi guys, some of you might remember the build thread I had about the car below, A 68 Mercedes W115 on airbags, I built back in 2013/14; I still have the Merc and I just started a new project that requires more work.....a lot more work, its basically a ground up resto. The car is a 67 Alfa Romeo Gt Junior 1300. I'm not doing anything crazy to it, just give the weekend racer look; stripped bumpers better seats and lowered a little retaining the 'sprint car' stance. Hope you guys enjoy it, and I can keep filming each step as it takes a lot of work!! As for the video, there is a strong 'Project Binky' influence, except I'm not as smart or have near as many tools as the boys! Here's what the car looked like before the previous owner stripped it.

Beautiful cars and I still regret selling my Giulia 2000 GTV Coupe although I probably enjoyed driving my 2000 Berlina more as no one ever gave it second look. Owning those rusty old Alfa's taught me how to weld - I always remember reading a tongue in cheek comment that - ".....Alfa spent all the money engineering the driveline and suspension and threw the bodywork in for free. No good complaining that it didn't last - it was free..."
I now only have glassfibre cars.........

They do love to rust don't they!! The floor and sills are a collection of rust traps! Believe it or not I've never driven one, just had a couple of rides in a friend's perfect 1600 Sprint Gt. I'll need to find an engine and gearbox for mine, as the car was imported without them. I might go for a 1750 as most Alfa enthusiasts say its the most free revving motor of the lot. 1300 engines seem to have become quite rare...I'm keeping my eyes open for one but its not a priority at the moment

I am so going to enjoy this thread Geoffrey. Your garage facility has great light to work in too. I used to have a 164 V6, serious electrical gremlins and dodgy build quality. There again i expected it from an Alfa. Luckily little or no rust but there again i am in Australia. Junior pricing getting too heavy for me. Book marked and keep the updates coming.

Thanks, Yeah I wanted to add enough light, I wired and extra circuit above the work bench. 164s are pretty cool, always liked them but I hear they're not very reliable especially in cold countries :S I'm working on the 2nd episode but they take time, a lot of hours of work compress in a very short video I hear you about the price of juniors, this car had a lot more invested than what I paid for, I had already left out the option of finding stepnose model when looking for a project, even the worst cars are going through the roof.

Progress has been moving forward on project raising junior...This is the look I am aiming for: This car was built by 'the Singer' of Alfa Romeos, Alfaholics. I'm going more after the look rather than the all out updated racing mechanicals this car has, oh just not in red Traced out a template of the recess I need to copy: Removed the old right rear floor pan that was held by a mix of rottens steel, layers of thick sheets crudely welded on and the factory spot welds on the inner side Alfa peek-a-boo All this and more in the second episode of Raising Junior, which we're currently working on

If the Merc is anything to go by the Alfa is going to look equally stunning when it's done. I'm looking forward to your updates.

I second that...!....the Junior, Giuliettas, Giulias, and its Fiat cousin are definitely on the bucket list.....goreous cars. you are off to a thoughtful and great start! JP

Thanks for the positive comments guys, this is the first Alfa I ever owned. I always thought they were amongst the best looking cars of the era and they're very quite sophiscticated for their time. It has disc brakes all round, twin cam engine and 5 speed box, not to mention the balanced handling. Too bad they rust so much and were considered as cars not worth fixing up till a few years ago. It seems my car went to the phase of being mended to pass MOTs judging by the amount of flat panels welded over rusted corners

My best mate at school had a 1750 Spider, when I had an MGB; I can testify to their advanced qualities, and that the 1750 is one of the sweetest motive units of all time - we did 3000 miles round Europe in all weathers with no money, camping where we could, and she lapped it up. They are reliable and dependable if looked after - horrible if not - but why wouldn't you?!
Looking forward to seeing this progress
Cheers
Matt

I see you are in Ontario. I am in London, what end of the province are you in? Hi Bjorn...you noticed the plates on the wall right I used to live in Mississauga about 4 years ago, the number plates used to be the car I had there (daily 05 Audi A4, not a classic). Since then I moved back in my native country, Malta a tiny island in Europe. Good job on the Volvo, its a thread I follow and watch to learn from!

Yeah, I know where Malta is; quite a change from Mississauga. Having lived on an island for 10 years (Puerto Rico), not sure I would want to go back. Good news on the Molvo front is that I should be back on it by the end of October. Been fixing a badly crunched MGB for a friend and it is getting close to done. I assure you, the Molvo has been one huge learning lesson for me as I go along! Can you tell me a bit about this place where you work/store your car? Is it a shop or some sort of communal car club work-space or aer you just lucky enough to have such amazing facilities with individual car stalls?

The workspace is the garage area below my apartment, the other units belong to other apartment owners. I was lucky I scored one of the longer units. Its different than in Canada where you need a garage with a detached house to have a space to work.
Thats one thing I missed living in Canada, I used to rent and needed a reliable driver so I didn't have space to work on cars and take them apart etc. We do have some of that island attitude were things are relaxed and slow but its good overall, nice weather and good economy. Next week a classic car race called Malta Classic will be held and it seems like its going to great one, I'll try to upload a few pics later.
Looking forward to see some updates about the Molvo, I like custom conversions as much as original restorations, even though I never did any complex engine swaps myself

I was lucky to meet some life long Alfa Romeo enthusiasts who know their stuff when it comes to the tech specs. They said all engines in the 105 (spider, gt, guilia) series chassis are interchangeable, in fact Alfa never had 'numbers matching' cars. Its the one I would like to get my hands on for this car as it will have a 1750 influence

Very very pretty cars. A friend of mine is in the process of rebuilding a '73 GTV having had the shell restored and painted. his was a South African import and was remarkably rust free for an early 70s Alfa. He is going for much the same look but in white.
Good luck with it.

I had the 1800 in a 75 - a rare car with aircon - and to be honest I didn't think it was due all the hype over the 2000's that I had in my Giulia Coupe or Berlina - The best engine in my mind was the Twin Spark in the 75 TS LE that I had. I cleared all my Alfa spares a couple of years back. The 1300 went to a guy restoring a Junior Z and the TS went to a guy building a Super, I had 4 engines, 4 boxes and 2 axles squirreled away but really needed the space. The price wanted for coupe projects - I had a mind to build a GTAm replica with the TS engine - was in my mind just silly. Lovely cars as they are just I can't justify the values they are commanding at the moment no matter how much I enjoy welding

Your friend's car sounds like a cool project too, I'm still debating the final colour, I have a favorite one but I'll have to see a spray out first. I'm considering most original colours of the era except for red as its too safe and common and black as I find it dulls out the cars lines. Lovely cars as they are just I can't justify the values they are commanding at the moment no matter how much I enjoy welding I have a lead on 2000 + gbox so if the price is right I might go for it, not really thinking about the drive train till the bodywork has moved on far enough. I'll be able to tidy up the garage once the new panels go on the car. It seems 1300s are super rare. I hear you about the prices, they are ridiculous, restored cars are on average 35,000 Euros. Its nice to know the effort will be worth it one day but its really killing the hobby for average guys like me who don't buy these cars as commodities, it just makes rust buckets expensive too. I was thinking of getting a mid 80's 911 before the Mercedes, since then the prices just exploded for every classic considered as an investment
