Debris from the sump is unlikely to get to the bearings as it would have to get through the filter first. Bearing damage most likely from running dry - which probably didn't happen straight after the sump-strike as you wouldn't have got 40 - 50 miles with no oil to bearings.
After the engine has been switched off and left for a bit the pump has then failed to prime on re-start, either due to the pickup/baffle damage or because it has been damaged by debris (it's on the wrong side of the oil filter and needs checking for damage).
Have had similar in the past on an old Sierra when a badger strike dented the sump and cracked the pick-up. Did another 140 miles the same night, but oil light stayed on when started after a night's rest as the pump couldn't re-prime due to the cracked pick-up.
