There's some really interesting work going on there. Just one question (which may be common knowledge to many people) what is the gearbox from originally? the only rear engined Renaults I can think of are the Dauphine, 4cv, and 8, none of which I'd think of as suitable donors for a sports car- also they're the wrong way round for your car.

ratchart, Lotus originally used an R16 motor and gearbox turned 180 degrees. This set up had the ring gear flipped to allow 4 forward gears. The gearbox i'm using is from a Fuego (r18's had the same gearbox) which had the motor ahead of the gearbox but was still a front drive car, so no need for a ring gear flip. From what I've researched, the early Espace's had the same gearbox, NG3, albeit with different final drive ratios.
Bjornagain, Yup, same car, same builder as on GRM.

Lovely car, fantastic work. You've put the steering wheel on the wrong side though! Can't be too many Europa's in Canada and is the B yours too? Opposite end of the sports car spectrum to a Europa!

Always loved lotus cars. Really like the work your doing and the silver car pictured. Are you going for the same bodywork?

Andyborris, I built the chassis to accommodate both rhd and lhd. It's just a matter of swapping out the steering rack and moving the pedals over. As for the MGB, that's dear old dad's though he rarely drives it and has left me in charge of maintaining it.
In regards to europas in Canada, I couldn't say how many but I do know of at least 10 here in Vancouver.
JohnT, I'm planning on leaving the bodywork as is. I do like the look of the banks 62 body but to do the same on my car would mean too much work.

Looks very cool. A guy who works for me completed one of these a year or so back and sold it at auction - it ended up going to Japan to a car collector. It was probably better than new but done as per factory spec.

A small update, I managed to spend a few days this past weekend working on the car. I made up some "oddie plates" and fitted them to the front lid and engine cover. I still have to modify the Dzus fasteners, but fingers crossed they will work: Then I drilled the body to take a modified Healey Sprite handbrake lever: The original handbrake is off an early Cortina, but the car didn't come with one and the fact I had a Sprite one lead me to install the nice shiny chrome one. I still have to sort out the cables, but that shouldn't be too big of a deal. I had some help too: She seems to enjoy it, and only asks for wine in return (and a ride in the car when it's finished). Other than that, I rolled it out onto the drive and was sort of shocked at how low it is: This next weekend will hopefully see the car guide coated and block sanded. The goal is to have it in paint sometime in the next month and a half.

It's been a long, hard slog, but the car is finally painted, though it will need a respray in the spring. The paint is a bit thin in parts, but at least it's in colour. Saturday had it looking like this: By the end of the day it looked like this: Today the body was reunited with the chassis, and rolled out into natural light: I'm glad my helper suggested I paint it the same colour as my old Eleven, it think it really suits the Europa. As for having to respray it, I'm not too upset about it. The plan now is to fit everything to the body, set the door gaps, get it running etc. then wet sand a respray. That way I know everything will fit and I wont be scared to scratch or chip the paint. Rod

I love Europas. I'll just leave this here, oh and by the way.....it's not a real car! It's a 1/18 model!

not a car that I have ever liked...and they are not really growing on me now but what a great thread on a great build. it will be stunning when done and all the better for the sheer amount of "homebrew" underneath!

Like many who have commented, I didn't 'get' the Europa when they were released - but it's really grown on me. Love this build.

Thanks for the compliments. I used to think Europa's weren't the best looking cars, but they've grown on me. Once I saw pictures of a 47 I was hooked, which is the reason I picked up this one. It's an early S2 so lacks the warts and taller front wings of the later S2's and Twin Cams.
andyborris, The blue is a North American Ford colour, Midnight Regatta Blue, though I'm calling it Scottish Racing Blue.
