Thanks very much for all of the kind words. Porsche ownership is something I have wished to be a part of for years, but the price tags associated with things certainly puts me on edge, so I am trying to take an affordable approach to repairing and returning a Porsche to the roads. In my case it seems as though the lay up of 3 years has had a detrimental effect on the car and caused things to bind up and otherwise fail. There has not been a huge amount of work completed recently due to having some time off of work, away from home enjoying the good weather. However now I am back hopefully some progress will be made. I went to start the car the other day and I had constant cranking and no stat what so ever. Looking at the tacho it was not bouncing. Must be the speed sensor! You may remember me going on about this earlier in the thread, it was mucky, needed cleaning and was the cause of my failure to start problem. I thought best to throw the original back in the car, and use the original sensor in the car. Through my extensive reading it suggested that cars which had been laid up for some time suffered with failures across these two sensors once returned into regular use. Because of this my search for a replacement pair of sensors begun shortly after I bought the car. Porsche wanted £145 per sensor which I was not prepared to pay. After a lot of reading and research, head scratching and frustration I managed to find a replacement from another main dealer at £10, so I bought a pair. With my non start problem I threw a replacement in. Original Porsche item on the right, alternative replacement from main dealer on the left. I threw this in and the Porsche fired straight up, seemed to actually drive noticeably better as well. Since buying my 944, I have grown some strange habit of trying to spot them. So here are a few. I went to work on a site down in Portsmouth or something and spotted this outside a Porsche specialist, I did enquire if it was for sale but it had sold a few days earlier according to the owner, he also had a large collection of 964's among newer 997s Then last Friday on the way to Stansted I saw this sorry looking state, very beat up, incredible damage to the quarter panels, smashed windows and all sorts, I can only imagine its destined for an oval track or parts.

Any updates on this? There will be a few shortly. There has been a bit of progress, but it's the boring, very uninteresting task of going and collecting new parts. In the next few weeks I hope to have some decent updates to throw up. I am getting seriously itchy wanting my first Porsche drive! Thanks for the interest.

After tucking this away due to other commitments a few months ago I pulled it out Saturday for work to commence!

Unfortunately my 944 suffered the dreaded DME relay failure. In the glove box were two totally shagged relays. This is what I was using to start the car to rule the DME out as a fault. I knew I had to replace the relay but I didn't really know what to replace it with. There are options out there starting at somewhere around the £60 to £70 mark and coming all the way down to just under £20. Logic would suggest spend more and get something better but I'm a tight wad and I bought a £18 Foreign special from eBay fully prepared to be disappointed. Threw it in and it works! So I am very happy! I don't know how long it will last so I will leave my DME jumper in the glovebox once this is on the road as a "just incase".

sounds familiar, bosch motronic + dual relay ? you could simplify/rewire by splitting it into two relays, that alone would future proof reliability but also make replacements a fiver

I made a DME jumper and keep it in my glovebox too. Too handy in a sticky situation haha, although thankfully mine has not gone on me yet!
Car looks good though, my mum has had 2 guards red 944s and as much as I hate to admit it it's probably one of the nicest colours.

Love it! Only recently became a 944 owner myself and am gradually going through all the posts to see what I'm letting myself in for! Bodywork had to come first on my list as it was in a light frontal but I'll get it home soon to work out its niggles! Great car, and great effort so far! Look forward to learning more from you!

I will see how this replacement goes at £20, even if I get just a year out of it I will be happy. However if it is a continuous thing that's certainly something I'd have to look into, although it seems apparent that you have a much better idea of what to do than me! DME jumper, refference sensor... I'm that paranoid I might even put an ECU in there! That's a pretty darn cool mother you have there, my mother was a beetle, golf gti, Capri kind of mother. There seems to be plenty of guards red about, and the paint on mine really needs some attention. I visited someone to collect some parts recently and they had one in your colour, or one very similar. Looked very nice. Love it! Only recently became a 944 owner myself and am gradually going through all the posts to see what I'm letting myself in for! I remember commenting on your one, black S2 with a bump? The 944 is sure good fun, although sometimes very trying!

You are Kent based aren't you? Or have I imagined that? Same case with these DME relays. Cracks in the solder or a faulty capacitor if i remember rightly. I'm pretty happy with my £20 relay, shame the genuine ones are £80.

I have to remove the tint off of these. Chemicals don't touch it. Thinners and spirits just don't do anything. I've started sanding but the paints a lot thicker than I first thought. What grade paper should i be starting with? I have been sanding with 2000grit but it's taking ages. 1000/1500/2000 and polish?

2000 grit is more like a finishing grade so will take you years. I'd try a light going over with 1500 then 1200 if that doesn't touch it. Using lots of water will help massively too.

I take it you have tried neat Acetone on the lights? That's normally pretty good at removing tinting spray.
Might be worth trying coarse cutting compound as well.

I frequent that area quite a bit for work as it happens. So if you see a crazed guy flashing and waving in a dirty white van it will possibly be me, or another local loony, there seems to be a few around here!

Yes I did, I was going to say I had tried that, but wasn't totally sure on the spelling so didn't! I stopped and got some lower grit paper today on my way home. I don't know what this tint is or how many layers there are but it's pretty stubborn. I'm struggling most to get it off around the print on the lights.
