Soup (recommended on another thread a couple of weeks ago) is a new show with just two episodes right now but right up my street, and feels like a good fit for RR. Lotus Esprits, Range Rovers, Kombis being restored - all done with charm, style and great production values (love the stop motion!) Ep 1. Ep 2. Just wanted to thank you for this, I’m finally getting into watching YouTube channels as normal TV now and this show is just perfectly balanced between technical and stories and informative and inspirational.

Not sure if it has been mentioned yet but, if you have skyQ you can stream YouTube from your phone or tablet straight to the tv. You can even control YouTube from the sky remote.
Nice way to watch it.

Great isn't it? I love how he doesn't go at his interviews with a pair of hedge-cutters like 'TV' has to, luxuriating in what they have to say.. The stop-frame animations are really original and you can't help but be enthused by his mojo-boosting shout outs to viewers, and his all-round friendly and laid back postivity. Be sure to subscribe and like the shows- the more positive feedback the YouTube algorithms get from users the more likely they will start promoting the show to other viewers in video end-cards etc. (once over the hump with 1000 subscribers he'll be eligible for ad-revenue = more projects and more shows. He does come on here every now and then I think so 'Hi George' if you see this - keep up the fantastic work!

I subscribed last week but just gone through and liked what I’ve watched so far. It’s tricky to do that when you watch it on tv rather than PC. The stop-motion scenes must be a pain to do when in the middle of trying to remove a stubborn bolt.

I was not aware this was how this worked, which is why I've liked your post, for useful information. I'll sub to SOUP now (and all the other great stuff I watch but haven't clicked the red button) [stupid I know, when I launched a channel a few months ago - but for advertising rather than monetising - and had no idea how the revenue worked lol] I started watching SOUP because of the link here too. Great show. Especially appreciate something of that quality coming out of Ireland rather than the "usual" sources.

surprisingskoda YouTube actually changed the rules last month making it harder for new channels to gain traction in this way as they'll only pay advertising revenues to channels with over 1000 subscribers and/or over 4,000 hours of watched content annually. This is causing wide outcry as it's raising the bar to entry for niche/just starting out video creators to get paid for the content they make, George's Soup shows are pretty long though so the hours-watched thing shouldn't be a problem but if his subs can get over 1000 he'll definitely be eligible to receive ad revenue As a side-note for anyone that has a fledgling channel - From my own experience, there are ways to get high initial viewing numbers on a video by paying a Click-Farm to boost it's initial viewership. I did this with one low-quality laser-cleaning compilation video I made about 18 months ago. I bought 20,000 views for about $50 USD. This raised the video's head above the parapet as it were and got the site's algorithms to start noticing it. 18 months later and it has over 171,000 views. I now also have also have about 600 subscribers. If I hadn't bought that initial fake viewing it would have rested in the doldrums with maybe 100 views. The cool thing now is that I have subscribers and can promo one video at the end of others, so another compilation I made now has almost the same amount of views - purely from the prominence of the first and clicks from end-cards and no nefarious use of click-farms. TL/DR - if you want to make a bit of beer money (I was getting about $75 usd a month from adverts before the rule change) with your videos to help you fund your equipment / car parts / garage heating bull you absolutely have to get people to like, share and subscribe your videos. To get over the hump at the beginning, though ethically dodgy - it's definitely worth looking into getting one of your first vids viewership boosted with paid-for clicks Or you can get sponsorship through Patreon. I sponsor Binky as it's total quality. I'd sponsor more if had the cash - therin the problem - if you have an interest and several favorite shows in that genre you can't really afford to sponsor them all. Sorry for the diversion. Pennance = non retro GTR with YooToob decals. Back to the cool vid recommends. For me that's Soup, Project Binky, Mighty Car Mods, (inc. The Skid Factory, Doug DeMuro, Jay Leno's Garage, Fully Charged. Jonathan Ward, and most recently Retropower Cars who are doing an awesome Mk1 Escort restorod for Gordon Murray.

Hello gents George here from SOUP, a RR member [and SOUP Patron] sent me the link to this chat and I felt I had to come and say thanks for the kind words, feedback and support. It's been a real boost to read the convo here. I recognise Littlepixel from a few chats in the video comments too, thanks man! I stress regularly about cutting down the interviews but I have to remind myself I'm trying to make a show I'd want to watch and to just do it the way I want it. Everyone has something interesting to say if given long enough to say it. The episodes had gotten very long and I'm trying now to keep them to 30mins or less. It's tough to do. Anyway I thought I'd give you my experience from a year as a youtuber. Think there's a little confusion above, I currently have a little less than 4800 subs, and whereas the 1000 sub mark opens up functionality for a creator, it's the 10k mark that is considered the hardest milestone to achieve, and the one that gets a channel a shot at bigger potential. Once a channel hits 10k it is eligible to be promoted by YT's algorithms; in the side bar and in end screens. SOUP was monitised early on and for a long time. I demonitised last week though. I had left the monitisation on because I get a free platform from YT and thought it was decent to make the relationship a two way street. Lately though without any recommendation from YT because of new algorithms, I realised I was putting ads on the episodes and inconveniencing my viewers while others were making money from my hard work. I got two small payouts from YT in a year [I'm not bitching in the least but I couldn't put a K&N kit on the Esprit for the money] but both were a result of a flurry of views when a Jalopnik article featured SOUP. With the hype of that gone, there's no point in putting ads on my videos. From my experience, a creator in the current state of things would need to upload four videos a week and get minimum 30k views per video to earn minimum wage. That might be possible for a gamer, but if your videos actually cost money to produce... forget it. Buying views is one thing and is put to good use by some. Buying subs is possible but all indicators show that the gains there can be transient, the hype can grow a channel but in the fullness of time those people who jumped on the bandwagon slowly realise they're not actually into it and eventually leave again. The Jalopnik article nearly tripled the channel's subscriber base! Now that SOUP's in the no man's land of these new YT rules, I'm really noticing the fall out from that Jalopnik hype. It feels like I take two sub steps forward and one back. The new YT rules mean that it's next to impossible for someone to grow a channel organically, and thats important to me for the channels integrity. The algorithms look for engagement - subscriptions, likes, shares, comments, links from external sites and even dislikes all count - so even if you're reading this and you hate my face, go dislike a video [please don't 😅]. Do support your favourite YT'ers though by liking, commenting and sharing. Even if you only say something simple like 'thanks' or 'nice video', it's a big deal to a creator and they will be grateful that you took the time even if they don't show it
Thing is though SOUP has grown largely organically to date and it shows in the analytic data. Because the majority of the people subscribed actually want to be there the channel has the engagement of a channel [more fitting the youtube stereotype] with three or four times the subscriptions. My thinking has totally changed... if I actually had about 15k subscribers I'd be in a truly strong position and very happy. It's strange to say, but I don't have a goal of 100k anymore, apart from it seeming impossible, I just don't need that many. There's a good vibe around the videos while they're under the radar, I have less dislikes than I have videos and the current ratio of views to new patrons is still keeping me going. Even better I can kind of keep up with everyone who engages. There's something real about that.

Hello gents George here from SOUP Great to have you here, really enjoy your channel. Feel free to do some self promotion here etc. when you release new videos, think you'll find there is an audience here for your stuff Interesting to read the thoughts of someone further inside the belly of the beast as it were.

Thanks a mill HoTWire, really appreciate the gesture I'm brutal at pushing the channel, largely because of time but it's something I'm trying to be better at doing. I've a buddy here who's always asking me to go to your meets but the timing hasn't been right so far. Will make it one of these days. The belly of the beast... yeah it's like that. There are no solid guidelines or rulebooks, I'm constantly reading YT related articles and watching videos to try and get insights. YT have started to communicate a bit more because they are getting heavy flack for basically abandoning creators, but it's still early days. Knew I'd be taking the hard road with the way I structure SOUP but the upshot is the solid bunch who follow, really cool that way. Hey Littlepixel, hope you liked that one It's probably the most skin of my teeth episode yet, barely got it done in time. Still no home found for the projects yet, it may end up on my folk's drive for a time. I think what'll happen ultimately is I'll build a workshop in the series. If that means braving it on the drive to save funds then so be it, the uncertainty with workspace has been torture.

Good to see you on here George, we lured you over eventually I think one of the key points you made was just to mention and remind those watching to like/share/spread the word to like minded mates, something I've been more than happy to do and I know you've picked up a few subscribers as a result. If everyone did the same as I'm sure most would be willing to do with a little reminder/nudge, then I think you will soon reap the benefits. Keep up the good work, the offer on Goodwood/Beaulieu still stands but sounds like you have more pressing issues for the time being - good luck with the unit search.

It was via this thread that I found SOUP, and just kept on watching. It was via littlepixels in depth post on this page that I realised that subs and comments count on YT and that's why I subbed from both my own channel and personal account and started commenting. Where exactly are you George? Can't do much directly to help with space, I don't think, but if we know where you are, someone might know someone that knows someone. I've a vague "whenever suits" drive down to pick a car up from Galway on a trailer soon, and if it happened that I could be of some assistance to shift things around at that time I'd gladly help. It doesn't matter that I don't actually know you - there's something about putting yourself out onto video as you've done that engenders good will and friendly help, even on car forums it's often like that too. Super insight above too. Really interested in all the changes inside YT at the minute, and how they affect how channels are funded and surviving. Thankfully ours is self funded as I've no idea what algorithms are

...we lured you over eventually ... / ...the offer on Goodwood/Beaulieu still stands but sounds like you have more pressing issues for the time being... Howdy Sam! How'd you go at the show? Goodwood is a big one and I'm almost nervous about getting there but the time will come. I saw a chap with a channel about half the size of mine get a media pass so that shouldn't be a problem once I've the time. ...that's why I subbed from both my own channel and personal account and started commenting. / ...if we know where you are, someone might know someone that knows someone... / ...Super insight above too ... I've no idea what algorithms are Thanks a mill for the subs, really cool I'm in the south Drogheda area, the cars are actually in the town but it's looking like I'll move them home about six miles south. Playing the long game may be the best option - save money and try to build a workshop in the series. In the short term though it'll mean SOUP goes open air. I should say; my YT insight above is my take, it's not necessarily accurate. I'm not convinced anyone outside of YT really knows what the score is and how it all works. It all seems to be educated guessing, trial and error, and each creator experiences different things depending on the demographic their content attracts. I'm lucky to attract a broad demographic [25-54 is 91% of SOUP's viewership, that's three age brackets] but I can imagine the experience would be massively different for a channel followed predominantly by the 18-24 bracket or younger. About algorithms. My understanding is that YT uses automated systems to do things like monitor and quantify channels by how much traffic/interaction they generate, I guess so that YT knows where best to place ad space it's selling to advertisers. Chances are they also decide which channels to recommend so that the platform is active in growing more ad space. They most likely do all the housekeeping stuff too like monitoring for unauthorised use of copyright music or posting of inappropriate material. The algorithms are a big part of the reason so many are in the dark about how it all works, because it's a computer doing the work not an actual person. 10k subs also gets you the bonus of being able to interact with a real person at YT by the way. When I finish the RR [Range Rover, not the other] I can produce a non stop time lapse of a car getting a pretty comprehensive body overhaul. Initially I thought that could have a chance of going a little more 'viral' and generating exposure for SOUP. I'm not so sure now, not least because even just running straight time lapse [as in no talk, just everything happening quickly] that video would likely be well over an hour long, possibly close to two! Who's going to watch that.

I won't derail this thread by going into detail but made some great contacts and picked up a few bits as mentioned on my thread. Re Goodwood, I initially meant the upcoming RR weekend (19/20 May) which is the same weekend as Bealieu spring autojumble but can do the other events too
