For me, clay is an essential part of the preperation process for any detailing package. I've been through every kind, every brand of clay cloth and mitt and have always gone back to Bilt Hamber. Here's it being used as part of a protection detail as part of a wax showcase I done for someone

I was dubious before trying a clay bar - couldn't understand how it removes all the curse word without further scratching the paintwork. Having used a Bilt Hamber one for a couple of years I can't recommend it highly enough, removes all the surface crud and gives a great base to wax onto and helps give a super shine to the car.

I'm a professional valeter/detailer and my go to combo is a Farecla G3 mitt and water mister - best for results with no faffing about.
I'm waiting on delivery of a Surf City Garage Clayzilla system, currently on back order from the US. I regularly use their Black Edge products for dark paint colours as well as their rapid detailer and really pleased with the results.
In basic terms the clay leaves the top surface glass smooth, giving a uniform gloss finish when you apply wax. If you clay then use a carnauba rich wax you'll get that almost wet look finish.
Generally I'd clay once a year, and if you haven't tried one a basic kit is cheapish and works - just stick to the trusted brands.
I think there's a lot of mystery around using clay, it's difficult, it takes ages to do, you'll scratch the paint etc but it's really a simple process that achieves results and is safe to do.

My daily, gets clayed once a year. See how the finish is smooth and even. Apologies for the modern content.

I bought a really cheap 3M one on eBay and used mild detergent as a lubricant. I couldn't feel any difference and it didn't pick up any dirt That's the problem with low quality chinese material, a lot of development goes into making a good clay I see people using Bilt Hamber. Is their 'regular' bar around £12 good?

I've never used a Bilt Hamber Clay, but a branded more expensive clay will be 100% better than a chinese one. It's 'get what you pay for' to a certain extent, don't bother with clay that is overly priced £20+

Never used clay but as far as Bilt Hamber products are concerned I know from personal and anecdotal experience that they are excellent. The posters above who mention BH seem to concur.

I've used BH Clay before, it's excellent, and even more value since you only need water as lubricant rather than wasting QD.

Bilt hamber clay bar used with regular water (i use de-ionised) gives a brilliant smooth surface. I really rate their products and have had very good results.

I can't help but feel that this is thinly veiled advertising for the OP, who joined the forum, and makes 95% of his posts about car detailing and products, which he sells. As for Bilt Hamber, that's what I'd personally try - I often hear rave reviews of their cavity treatments on here and elsewhere. They're clearly a company which sells decent products.

I've just done a really contaminated Ford Focus this morning, one of the worst ones I've seen. My camera isn't the best as it couldn't focus on the smaller contamination, but the you can see the huge tar spots. This picture was after shampooing the car: Then a quick clay, hand polish and wax, this: Amazing what clay can do

I'm just passionate about clay bars, I like to get involved in conversation and I have tried to veer away from blatant advertising. I've had permission from the administrator to post a competition on the forum, I haven't recommended mine to anyone. I just like reading personal opinions and experiences.

I much prefer the F3 mitt to clay bars. Mine has been used half a dozen times and still works a treat. I like the effect of a bar too but with my big clumsy hands the chances of the bar ending up on the deck are pretty good.
I always thought my Alfa 156 was pretty clean until I clayed it. The difference was something of an eye opener.

I was pondering this after reading from the start and I think I'm going to start on the P100 with a breeze block, then move up to a brick, then the back of a bathroom tile etc. Gradually working towards a clay bar.
Mind you if I did the daily, I think I could skip a couple of steps and go straight from brillo pad up!.
