If stat housing leaks due to corrosion then give it a thorough clean and coat it with something like liquid metal/Quicksteel/epoxy resin (or whatever you have over there) and once set sand it flat on a linisher or a sheet of sandpaper on top of a sheet of glass. This will fill in all the pinholes/rough surface and get the gasket surface flat and will last for years.

That’s exactly what I did to mine and it worked nicely. I think I media blasted the stat housing to get a good finish and then used JB weld to fill it.

The corrosion is right on the lip of the housing. I'll do that if i have to, but I have another housing I'm pretty sure, so not too stressed. If the other one is just as bad however..
I'm not sure how jb weld will go. Obviously the head gets a bit hotter, but you can see how the dissimilar metals shrank/expanded where we filled the head. Surprised it didn't crack or leak, to be honest. Other than at the intake gasket.

JB is good stuff, but I'd probably go for chemical metal or similar. Heat wont be a problem for it.

Go on then? Hah. Got a spare 15k? Was planning on painting my bonnet this weekend. But Friday night I got drunk and had fun with friends, and then Saturday the gf and I decided to take it easy, so we visited a nursery or two. I did manage to stop in at Supercheap and get some bog and sandpaper though. Was pretty tired after that, though. Car ran a little hot in the middle of the day but wasn't too bad. Today I got up late, changed the stat housing over. This is the chunk out of the old one. New one is a slightly different design, it has a vacuum bung in the side of it, and a much more pronounced mating service. Cleaned the faces up, bolted it down, took it for a test run. Seems to have stopped the leak. Have just spent an hour stripping half of the last sticker off the bonnet. Just stopped for lunch. Back in to it now..

Just adding this in here so I can find it later.. 14.25l/100km Bloody show off! Hah. It's pretty poor, really. I have way better fuel economy than I did before, but it's still not amazing. Figured I'd better keep track of it for a while so I can justify the effort of swapping to an eleccy dizzy. Which I still need to order bits for.. Need to do an oil change this weekend, too. After 1700km.. those hot cycles when I was having thermostat issues must have cooked the oil. Although I wonder how bad the headers are oil filter directly below them.. if the stock exhaust had a heat shield... Edit to add - thermostat housing still leaks. Seems to be ana issue with the surface on the intake itself. When I get half a chance I'll need to drop some coolant and open it up again and try again with some goop.

That's atrocious fuel consumption mate, like less than 20 mpg. What's up with it? Does it include a lot of stop start around town driving? That said my 18R powered RX30 Cressida (NZ new in 1979) used to get around 18 mpg around town in the late '90s. It was also a grossly under-powered pig but I thought it looked cool. Wish I still had it.

Yeah my commute has no highway driving, usually lucky to get to 60 on the 70 limited roads. Although saying that, both this week and last week I've done a half hour trip out to my mates new house which is out in the sticks and thus 80-90 all the way. Didn't help my average though! It'll be interesting to see how it goes once I've swapped the distributor over.

I paid $1.60 a litre for 91 in Brisbane last month and $1.32 down the coast a bit. It's $2.35 here today. Also why are you running 95?

3.45US here in the states (gallon).... divided by 3.785 = 1.097 (conversion for litre) 2.35/ litre x 3.785 = 8.89/gal 1.60/ litre x 3.785 = 6.05/gal 1.27 US = 1 pound sterling. 8.89 x 1.27 = 11.29/gal 6.05 x 1.27 = 7.68/gal I was about to complain, but after doing the math, uh, I got nothin! JP BMW gets 24mpg average, Passat gets 30mpg average....Dakota gets 18 on a good day! JP

15.28l/100km. Was a short week between fills and prices have started to drop down again. Must have been an Adani conspiracy putting the prices up for the elections...
Igor, I run 95 because that's closest to recommended from factory, and also that's what everything is dialed in for. Not sure if it would make that much difference, but the dizzy also has a screw for vac advance (I think) that is based off what fuel you're running.

Interesting how vehicles, and their spec have always been aimed at certain markets. It still goes on.
On new vehicles, my D-max in Malaysia (built in Thailand) was detuned 30bhp to manage the sludge the Malaysians call diesel. On trips to Thailand, the difference was huge on their fuel in terms of driveability.
Here, Madam has a new Mazda C3 and I remember her being told to only use 91. 91, 95 and 97 are the normal choices, all minimum Euro 4, some 5. It's a very price sensitive market and Mazda obviously realise that. However, working on the basis that if 91 is good, 100 must be better, she filled up. It ran like a bag of spanners. I told her to nurse it and keep topping with 91 at every opportunity. Eventually, it sorted its life out, and is fine again.
On that subject, Petron boast that they are the only supplier of 100RON fuel in the Philippines. I reckon there's probably about 6 cars here that can actually drink it. How many others are being stuffed full of fuel they can't realistically use?
The '38 operates happily on 95.
