No drains yet, but yeah need them (can you remind me again in a month ) hopefully I will remember when we drill the holes for mounting the seats We went and finished grinding the welds and primed up the bare metal..... used up a few cans of primer that were knocking about after we ran out of rustoleum stuff in a can, so it’s starting to look urban camo or fifty shades of grey....... or I’ll just get my coat maybe Then we later the bonnet on, which made it look a bit like a plane we thought Next week we are going to try and bolt some suspension on, then it will roll and we can tow it home etc..... Except, because the fugitive doesn’t use the standard mounts for the beam. The a-frame I got cheap won’t work.... so I. We’d to have a think about that (if anyone had a suggestion, I’m thinking use some u-shackles on the outside of the beam..... then somehow bolt the a frame to that, maybe using one of the bits of scaffold bar in there at the minute)

I can't see why your A frame won't work? They clag around the beam... It won't foul on the beam clamps you have there, should just go under and round the beam when its on? Or am I missing something?

It hits the clamps that hold the beam, it’s about 10mm on either side In that photo, the a-frame is resting on the clamps So probably just needs the tubes springing out a bit and maybe the clamp faces trimming... will have a better look when the beam is in

Ah now I see. Careful forcing it wider, you don't want to track any welds. Also if your fug weighs more than 750kg then blablabla legal wafflewaffle unbraked towing weights exceeded yaddayadda.
You have a welder now ;-) cut a pie slice on each side, kink to towards, reweld. Repeat on the inside further down to make a dogleg.
Or you can bend it the same way using ratchet straps and a jack.

Also to say, no matter what the weight of the trailer (and a car under 750kg on an a-frame is treated as a trailer by law) if the trailer is fitted with brakes, they must work... I have a recovery a-frame, and have used it a number of times with the buggy, but generally in situations where I can claim a breakdown (or have broken down) with both cars being fully legal. www.gov.uk/government/publications/a-frames-and-dollies/a-frames-and-dollies

So it would be mostly the spaceframe and gradually more bits. I wasn’t going to bother fitting the engine for a while (as we know it starts and that will save some weight) so I’m confident that it will be under the 750kg. It has no calipers on it though, so does that mean it doesn’t have brakes or that they don’t work? Beyond that, I was going to only use it for breakdown situations, and regardless I would happily argue that using it to pull the fugitive away from a busy road or junction quickly is safer than a bit of rope...

No calipers = no brakes = doesn't have to work.
I wouldn't worry too much most popo are pretty reasonable and / or can't be bothered with the argument. Just don't draw too much attention to yourself... LOL!!

Bit of pre-weekend progress.... Cut the back seat area out of the frame (should have done this earlier... but left it in just in case) And put a bit of paint around the areas that we will assemble Have been shopping (it’s strange buying tools to do the job properly after years of making do... but got a spring plate tool so Tom can do it) And bought some bits for the welder Self dimming visors are awesome!! Fitted the new torch...... and it didn’t work So took it all apart again, then took the new torch apart and the spring behind the trigger isn’t long enough to contact the block.... fitted the one from the old torch And it worked, only had a thin bit of sheet available, but had a quick go... (Think I need a bit of practice! ) Going to try and modify the swing arm spring plates before the weekend and then it should mostly be bolting together!

I should really get round to updating my thread, I did the modified swing axle spring plates a couple of weeks ago... It's pretty easy, just lots of measuring and templates first to make sure you can get the tracking right at the end.

I made a template from a bit of plastic sheet, and checked on both IRS plates (the template was the same but flipped) and then marked onto the swing arm plates, I then double checked with verniers, thinking the same about the tracking...... let all my slitting discs at the farm though, so got no further

Bit more gas and heat in those welds and slow your movement a bit. Make a little pool, then holding your torch at about 45* push the pool with your torch making little tiny zigzag or figure 8 movements with the tip.
Loving the progress!

Oh, cleaner metal too. There's some paint in there contaminating your welderising

Hi John, not checked in here for a while! With regards to the fuel tank, I'd run it up front if at all possible - you want as much weight as you can up front. My bug will lock the front brakes up and that's with a standard tank and sheetmetal. In my old drag bug I even had the battery mounted in front of the beam. The frame is coming along really well. As a little welding project, at the back, bolt in the gearbox and see if you can fabricate some braces from the side of the cradle to stop the frame horns twisting.

Morning John
Where did you get the fuel tank? I am looking for similar for a VTEC Mini project, are there any baffles or foam in it?

The plan was to fit the tank up front, but when we found we could get a spun alloy tank, I ordered that instead... but it doesn’t fit without modification. Long term I think it’ll have to go in the front (as that is inline with IVA, and though it’s registered as a ‘sandrail’ I’m still expecting somewhere along the line that they’ll decide to reinspect it)

It came from the US, I bought it through Machine7 www.machine7.com/product.php?xProd=11078I’ll see if I can find where it came from originally (but I got rid of the enormous box)

I should really invest in some bracing for mine lol! I imagine you’ll need it more than us, if it’s power related But there were some tubes that had been cut off nastily. They tried in with the engine cradle, so thought it’d probably need something extra around there. We’ve removed them, and are going to sort them out when we do the engine cradle.... need the engine in for the cradle, and also we can work out the best positions for the replacement tubes at the same time
