Hi! I saw this episode of Jay Leno's garage on Youtube. With that Charger with a 9 liter Mercury boat engine in it... Couple of days later, I stumble across this. And it is beautifull! Stark raving bonkers mad!! Someone had the idea of taking an Evinrude two-stroke V8 and stuff it into a Volvo Amazon. Here's more of it, the next best thing to a build thread I could find: www.facebook.com/Rudezon/And now listen to it! This made me wonder - we've had a lot of crazy aero-engined cars, tank enigined cars - but are there more BOAT engined cars!?

Top grammar tips! Bought = purchased. Brought = relocated Lose = misplace/opposite of win. Loose = your mum

A 2 stroke V8 Amazon, I'm quite honestly amazed, and it's been a while!
I cant even pretend to claim I know anything about boat engines, my boat knowledge is limited to ones with sails, however a twin engined (much as they are in boat form) cigarette powered something or other would be pretty awesome.

Farina diesel shares it's power* plant with pretty much every canal boat. And they're still making that POS boat anchor in turkey. Hateful things

Can I make the joke that every Rover v8 is a boat engine? I'll get my coat. Should that not be Buick? There is a story (he said with his anorak pulled firmly in place) that the boss of Rover was visiting friends in America who worked for GM at a fairly high level and he "discovered" the V8 on their garage floor having been pulled from a donor Buick to power the family speedboat. I think this is the basis of the story that the Buick/Rover V8 is a boat engine since GM only ever put it in cars. GM had already dropped the engine from their range which is why Rover were able to get the rights cheap. It's also a fact that, as built by GM, the engine was redlined at a miserable 4800rpm which didn't suit Rover so they asked the GM engineers why they couldn't get it to rev to 5500rpm. The GM engineers were puzzled and asked why, in answer they were driven up and down the M1 in a V8 fitted P5 test car at 100mph plus (no speed limits on British motorways then) The GM boys, equally impressed and terrified, gave in and sorted the motor, they were used to the US blanket 55mph speed limit which made high revving engines un-necessary! Often thought that a light 7ish car with a 200hp 2 stroke outboard motor might be fun, 2 stroke engines are very light, no cams and valve train made from steel in them....another daydream car I'll never build!
There was a Ginetta that raced in Germany in the 1960's (a G4) that had DKW 2 stroke power, was quite successful too.

Ther was a hillclimber known as the Peter Voight special that ran a Konig two stroke which is a flat 4 originally designed for hydroplane racing. It was pretty quick in its day & made an amazing noise.

Well, there was an MX-5 in the 24h LeMons race that was powered by a Snowmobile engine 3-cylinder two stroke, with a CVT transmission. Seems to go quite well! Just as bonkers realy...

The Coventry Climax derived engine in the Imp had a marine application as well.

The Coventry Climax derived engine in the Imp had a marine application as well. Thought it powered a water pump for fire engines? Or is that just another urban legend? Steve

Steve No, that's exactly what it did. They crop up for sale quite often. If you want to really go back in time, the first diesel passenger bus built in this country was a conversion carried out by Barton Transport by fitting a Gardner 4L2 Marine engine into a Lancia chassis in 1930 This was closely followed by Foden fitting a 4L2 into one of their lorry chassis later that year

On the subject of [potential] urban myths, I believe the Volvo Penta 2.5l boat engine is a stroked version of the 2.3l as seen in 240 cars.
