Great choice of motor! As a Radiant Red '90 spec XR3i owner i can highly recommend a Radiant Red '90 spec XR3i Nice one mate I like being part of the gang! Bit of an update from me... Gave the car a service on Saturday... First of all had to pop the bonnet as the cable had come off. I ended up putting a cable tie like so to hopefully stop it happening short term like this Once I was under the bonnet I started making my way through the pile of parts... I didn’t quite get all the way through due to time constraints but did manage to change Water Pump, Cam Belt, Alternator belt, Thermostat and gave it fresh coolant Alternator Belt needed doing…
Frustratingly the air filter I purchased is wrong and the right one is a bit of a curse word to source, luckily managed to find it on ebay. I’ve never had to put back such a disgusting filter before
Also the fuel line was just darn right dangerous running across the whole engine bay. It was curse word fuel out when disturbed so I also swapped it and the fuel filter. When I put it all back together it was tapping heavily I thought curse word I had buggered it! I then re-did the cambelt to check it all out, then I thought about it and because the car was nose up in the air there was some oil starvation, so I topped up a bit of oil and let it pump some oil around then all was good again. That left me with coil, air filter and spark plugs left as I had to shoot off down to brighton for a night out Saturday and wander around Sunday Monday I was also fed up of the exhaust so went from this…. To this… although still got the rubbish "ouch" sticker falling off but suprisingly difficult to remove Tuesday and I was still car orientated in my day.... on the way into work the rev counter died and car was down on power, I limped it to work and couldn’t see anything obvious, so I then gave up took it to a local garage to asked for advice. After speaking to them I tried swapping the coil pack in the car park which didn’t work and then noticed some dodgy wiring and again it didn’t work. By this time I was late for a meeting so had to leave the car at the garage. It ended up being 2 of these culprits (see below) with wires to the coil just pushed in. The garage sorted it for me for beer money. I took it home last night and gave it its first wash in prep for Insurance Valuation photos. I took these today in between showers So all in all a busy few days next step to keep driving it, see what else breaks, fit some replacement bits then investigate some faults (e.g. Central Locking that has been disabled by removing the fuse)... I can't wait! Cheers Josh

Hi although not much to update I thought I would throw in a few bits and bobs that I've managed to do. The car has been great since last update been using for the commute into work and starting to rack up the miles. Only issue is that I think the tyres are rubbish as its wheelspins pretty easily in first 2nd and has rubbish turn in especially in the wet. The tyres are a rubbish brand so will need to address at some point First on recent things I've done was to renew the air filter and change the air filter housing as was missing some clips I then had to prep the car for a show on Sunday so gave it a wash and sortof polished it before it rained on Saturday. When it did rain and this showed up a few leaks in the boot. One was from the rear window seal and it was also leaking from the rear lights. As the LHS light had a crack in a la: I thought best to change it. This showed up someone had gone to town with some heavy modifying by putting tights over the rear lenses at some point, the remenants of which were still fixed to the back of lense. Unsurprisingly this was soaking well so was a good source of water access. And replaced to look like this... (also shows beading as a result of polishing!) Annoyingly has a bit of a chip but can't really be seen The otherside I thought I'd check aswell. The previous owner had siliconed it into place and there was some dodgy wiring. I decided to tidy up wiring and replace the light lense. Whilst it rained on Sunday, I also soldered on a decent connector onto each 6x9 in the wooden rear parcel shelf and tidied up, then trimmed of the excess cable so that I can remove the parcel shelf with ease. Anyway the reason for the polishing was a classic car boot in Kings Cross Finally who knew chewy would smell this good! Cheers for reading, more pics of classic car boot in general section Cheers Josh

I like the way someone has ironically scraped it off after it was stuck on.

Hi, Very quick update in prep for first MOT and classic Ford. Unfortunately quantity of items done was hampered by the dreaded clutch quadrant change which took most the time to do and wasn't helped by me initially inserting the pawl in the wrong way. Anyway the amount of times i put it together incorrectly I reckon I could change one pretty quickly now and have the order of the washers ingrained in my head. What a ballache that is by the way. why did ford make it such an awkward design. I'm going to have to go back there at some point as the kit that came with the car is a cheap £5 job and didn't include new bushes. The ones on it are pretty warn so will need replacing before they turn the pedal hole oval. Replaced fog light switch which had stopped clicking on and replaced the indicator stalk as it was extremely loose on mine. and finally swapped out the rubbish 6x9s for some slightly better 6x9s to fit in the MDF parcel shelf so that I can play music at a reasonable volume without it crackling. Rubbish speakers... New (to me) speakers And fitted I had to move my Capri to work on the Escort. It started after some juice in the battery. I love this thing I must get it in a garage to get it pulled straight and fixed... After the above mass of activity I've still got quite a list to go throgh. I'm not sure if it will pass its MOT. I've spotted some areas of corrosion so rather than try and hide I'll leave them as is, as the garage is pretty good and will get them to do a repair as needed. MOT is next week and Classic Ford is this weekend so priorities that I want to get done early on Saturday prior to heading to the pod are - Fit 38mm grommet in hole for rear wiper and remove tape - Remove "ouch" sticker on rear bumper - Clean - Polish - Wax The only other things I think to do for MOT are: - Rear seat retainer is a curse word to catch and requires a lot of force. Metal bit on seat needs bending a bit to catch easier - remove high level rear brake light that doesn't work Other items to do (in no particular order) - Silicon seal Rear lights as still leak in the rain - Change Oil (now well over the 3000mile mark since last change - but does leak so self changes to some extent!) - FIt new Spark Plugs - Wire brush weids and repaint patch on underside to check its solid - Re-fit front speakers and covers - bleed brakes - balance wheels - re-seal rear window as leaks - refit amplifier and centre console as is missing a load of screws and isn't fully inserted (also sort mess of wires behind the dash at same time) - Replace rear bumper - Check for rust and treat (before winter!) Finally some pics I took after a "test" drive of the new clutch pedal mechanism, felt like a rally with the rain! Love the rear quarter view Cheers Josh

Nice XR3i there, doing a good job of bringing it back to how it should be. Keep the pics coming Thanks mate appreciate it. I can't believe its been 2 months since I last updated this thread, the XR3i has been great and I use it pretty much every day. First and foremost... I put a bung where there once was tape… Then did these bits for classic ford (no pics unfortunately): - Remove "ouch" sticker on rear bumper - Clean - Polish - Wax It had a great day out at classic ford and by coincidence there was another XR3 on the Capripower stand which meant it sort of looked a planned amongst the sea of Capris. Was interesting seeing the differences from an early car to the later car. Also was useful to see the differences in the models that I never really picked up on. I was able to get some good pics of some similar cars to mine which I can use on references. Followed classic ford up with the MOT which it passed after a TCA bush and CV joint although the garage also highlighted that it was wearing the wrong type of wheel nuts which I corrected shorly afterwards. Was also getting an intermittent charge issue so a new alternator sorted that. Went to pick up a rear ¾ for my capri from Preston – I’ve written about that somewhere else was a good drive up and a slow drive back. I should really add this pic to the retro load luggers thread That highlighted that the brakes weren’t the most confidence inspiring so the next weekend, after I’d done the oil change and the spark plugs, I thought I’d bleed the brakes. On attempting the “quick bleed” there was an issue as the NSR drum wasn’t getting fluid. The brake hose had collapsed, it was 1.30pm on Saturday at this point, and the local motorfactors had just shut so I had to borrow my dads car to do the 50mile run to burton power to pick up there last braided hose set. The brake hose must be as old as the car it was seized and I ended up cutting it off so I only replaced the troublesome brake line. I need to go and do the rest when I’ve got a bit less time pressure and didn’t need to shoot off to spend some time with GF. Car was looking great and I went camping…. Campsite was amazing looking over the Swanage Railway Then went camping again… this time in Sussex Then went to a festival… no photo as you don’t want to see the state of it. I then replaced the HT leads as one end had a crack so car was a bit hesitant at times. The fuel line also had perished after only a month so I swapped it for a braided hose made of the super resistant stuff which the name of escapes me. Before After The fuel line is a bit loose so not sure I’ve routed it correctly. If anyone has any comments please let me know And that sort of brings me up to date…. Out of my previous list I’ve not done much but its not grown much. I’ve really been enjoying cruising around it. So still to do - Silicon seal Rear lights as still leak in the rain - Change Oil (again its due!) - FIt new Spark Plugs - Wire brush weids and repaint patch on underside to check its solid - Re-fit front speakers and covers - balance wheels - re-seal rear window as leaks - refit amplifier and centre console as is missing a load of screws and isn't fully inserted (also sort mess of wires behind the dash at same time) - Replace rear bumper - Check for rust and treat (before winter!) - Re-hang exhaust (bloody speed bumps) I cleaned it for the first time since classic ford and it came out beautifully…. Hopefully not so long til the next update Cheers Josh

Update time on the XR3i. This is the first weekend I’ve had in a while. I’ve managed to get quite a bit done across the Escort and my Transit. Nothing major just lots of small bits that needed doing. I’ve had a dodgy shoulder as well so that didn’t help the speed. First milestone was where I was working… the street. This was a first for me. Normally I take the car back to my parents to work on their drive and use my old mans garage where all my tools are kept. However I’ve just managed to bring most my tools down as now have a lockup in which to store them in so thought I’d break my duck of working in the steet. First thing was to try out the ramp extenders with the £8 carboot ramps so I could swap the oil out. They work well and make things a lot easier. Should of got them years ago rather that faffing with blocks of wood etc… to get low cars on and off the ramps. As I left the oil draining I thought I’d tackle another issue that was the central locking not working. It hasn’t worked since I’ve had the car and you have to enter the car via the passenger door. I put the 15Amp fuse back in and as previous occasions the drivers and boot locks just cycle between locking and unlocking. The passenger lock doesn’t do anything. First thing was to take the door cards off… I think someone had been in them before. I’d read that it could be the connections and maybe cleaning them up would resolve it. I hoped this dodgy connection was the cause… Alas it wasn’t that and it turns out it was the passenger side motor. It actually started getting hot to the touch and by squeezing the casing it triggered the central locking to cycle… The casing couldn’t be prised open so I’ve resigned to ordering a new motor, which I’m hoping to win on ebay this eve (have just won). Next I wanted to winterise some of the rusty bits and previous repairs. I wire brushed the underside to get the worse of the dirt and rust off. This is a repair that was gummed up with silicon sealer under a seat mount. It got through an MOT but shouldn’t have. It needs to be repaired properly, but as that’s beyond my skill set, I’ve just undersealed it with the rest of the underside to protect it for the time being until I get it sorted properly. I had to dodge traffic on the road side of the car and the odd local youth on scooters to do the other side but luckily nothing as bad. Next job was one of the spot lights wasn’t working and hadn’t since I had the car. I thought it was the bulb so I undid the spot to find it was pretty rusty. I took it off completely then knocked it against the corner of the door which sealed its fate and the other spot duly came off so I wasn’t rocking round with one spot. So front end now looks like this After spinning the car around I was able to do the final job of the day. This was a consequence of the speed bumps around London. The rear exhaust mount had split. From this droop… To this, nice and tight against the bumper I finished with the XR for the day and played with my other toy Shameless thread link here: retrorides.proboards.com/thread/191459/1978-transit-autosleeperUntil this evening as I was packing up I remembered one last thing which had been bugging me. The sunroof winder had clicked round and gone out of sync with the roof. Small things but satisfying. I’ve got the spot lights and central locking on order, so won’t be long until its all back together and better than before. I left the 2 cars like this. Cheers Josh

Hi Quick update on the xr3i. It's been good to me having just gone over 6 months and 10000 miles in my ownership with no major issues (touch wood). I started with a bucket of bits And a bare front end This was the reason front was bare I purchased some replacements off Facebook which I thought were identical but in fact slightly different so rather than replace 1 lense I had to replace both Spot the difference Old New Sorted out some broken wiring and we had light I then swapped the air filter which I forgot to change when I serviced it Pretty disgusting… I'm tempted to get a kandn as the filter size isn't produced anymore but because it likes to blow out some oil I don't think it's worthwhile to do until I sort our a catch can or something. And this was what went in Nos Final action was to fix the central locking. I had diagnosed it as a dodgy passenger side motor which I had ordered a replacement of. I fitted it and result the motors locked and unlocked without going into spasm. But still annoyingly i can only unlock from the passenger side. For some reason the drivers lock won't unlock the door. It will lock the doors but won't unlock. I think that a linkage has gone which ill investigate a cure and if not I may get a aftermarket remote central locking kit to bypass it. At least it's better than before as I know longer have to lean over from the passenger side to unlock the cars. Should of also given it a wash but that can wait Cheers Josh

Will be that the Drivers door lock had another key. Ford door locks up until the focus lock with any random ford key for some reason.

The fixings in the door are slightly different from the passenger side so made me think it may of been replaced at some point. Saying that makes a lot of sense

Looks very good. Love to see the progress! What are the plans? Cheers pal it's not much and pretty boring compared to most things on here. I use it more as a record so I remember what I've done and get a sense of satisfaction from it. Plan wise I'm trying to resist to much as have 2 other toys and limited time to play as it is. As this is my daily I'm trying to keep it running. Short term I want to sort out the leaks before to long and touch up the arches and sills before winter takes grip. Then I've got to fit new pads, discs and shoes.. then sort the central locking... then I want to swap the suspension as it's a bit tired... then I also need to weld up the floor... oh and sort the ICE out as I'm missing a few speakers. HaHa quite a list. I'll be happy if nothing breaks and it stays reliable Cheers Josh

You sound sooo much like me lol. My wife keeps me from turning everything into a project, she's good like that..... erm..... I like reading the little updates, it's good seeing old cars getting some love, even if they're not having a fortune spent on them. That's why I love RR, such a mixed bag of cars and budgets, and everyone's like minded. Wish I still had my old '3i, can't keep them all though (so I'm told!)

Update on the XR Cars been in use daily for the last few months mainly trouble free... First day back at work this year... South circular revs die. Pull over just before a roundabout. I had a quick fiddle with wires under the bonnet, nothing I can obviously see, so I call the AA. They arrive in about 15mins (because of my location in rush hour) spend 30secs pluggling the coil back in, then it fires straight up... curse word at least a simple fix. Other problems is the oil consumption is growing especially if I gun it. I've purchased a head gasket set and the tool for valve stem seals so may whip the head off and have a gander. May also get a pressure tester to check pistons as theres quite a bit of crankase pressure. Final problem is that I noticed today the steering has a bit of movement. Next weekend I'm going to change the pads, disks, shoes and fit the rest of the braided hoses so will get it jacked up and have a look. Enough of the problems this is what I’ve been up to the last couple of weekends. Lock Saga... After getting the central locking working last time, it still wouldn’t unlock from the passenger side. I purchased a remote locking kit to ignore the problem. This was back at the last update and its being lying around since until last weekend. Not to exciting to show but wired it in and its great. Helped by purchasing this little lighter fluid powered soldering iron which I’ve used loads already... Next I moved onto changing up the ICE. I wanted to swap the headunit out of the XR into my campervan as the alpine unit in the XR has bluetooth which means can be linked into my phone and other peoples phones to play tunes when camping. I was going to buy a headunit to stick in the XR when funds allowed, however my bro gave me his old kenwood unit so thought it would be perfect to use. The XR also has an alpine in-line amplifier that I’ll likely stick in the Capri as don’t want the extra battery drain on the Camper. So slightly backwards step I started with this Notice the tape holder below the ash tray that doesn’t fit very well due to the amp. This was annoying me. After removing the head unit amp and tape holder I was left with this I tidied it up and removed wiring that I didn’t need The amp was guilty for a lot of it but there had been a fair bit of playing behind here. This is what I ended up with. Move on a weekend and I wanted to fit these Into here And here The speakers I had purchased I thought would slot straight in, unfortunately they didn’t and required some munipulation of the holders for them to fit. I could of taken them back and swapped them down for the size down, but chose to just crack on and get them fitted. I marked out the material I needed to remove from the holders This was last night and I realised I needed some tools to do the removal of the material as didn’t have anything suitable. I called it a night and woke up this morning to crack on and it was a bit fresh. Praise the heated front screen for mornings like this. As It was circa 8am no shops were open for me to purchase the tools so I decided to re-do the front spot light wiring as not long after I played around with it last time one stopped working. Wiring looked like this Used the soldering and some connectors to get it looking like this The screw that earthed the spots was the same as the front headlight used and didn’t really want to come out. When it did it then didn’t want to go back in. So I ended up rummaging around and finding a self tapper that was slightly larger to secure the earth which took a bit of buggering around finding and walking to and from the lockup. Hopefully the last time! By this time I’d killed a couple of hours I then headed to the shops and ended up with this so I could crack on with the speaker install It means I can work on the street without a power supply. I got a bit carried away and got the 3 piece set as the angle grinder will come in useful. I did look at getting better but figure I’ll likely break it and abuse it so is convenient that I can take it back to any Homebase and get it swapped out over the next 5 years. So after getting a cordless drill I went where I had a power supply as it was warm. Drilled out the holders Filed out the sharp edges and fitted the speaker to it Then fitted it in the car Because of the size I was worried the speaker cover wouldnt fit but I managed to get it secure Repeated for the passenger side Then tested it Happy days it works! Thanks for reading, cheers Josh

I had a few cvh escorts/onions back in the day, oil consumption and breathing heavy can be a blocked breather pipe, found down the back of the block I think, I could be wrong so check the location, It can get completely gummed up and want to blow the oil filler cap off, The valve stem seals can let a lot of oil through and giving it the beans can be like batmans smoke screen! Hope you get it sorted and looking forward to seeing a update, Keep going!

Reading your last post brought back memories! That was the ignition amplifier module. I remember being glad of the heated front screen also! Quite a novelty on a car of that age.
