I have a real itch that I need to scratch. I would love to smoke around in a Spirit or Shadow with a Toyota or Nissan lump.
Anybody had a crack at it?
A Roller garage has one For Sale for 15k which is bonkers!

Keep an eye on ebay, as you sometimes see Silver Shadows needing repair for under ÂŁ2000. Also seeing as you're not wanting the engine, you can get some money back for that.
Another thing you could do, is see if any of the RR/Bentley breakers have anything without the power plant for sale.

I'd say a GMC V8 turbo diesel might be the way to go. They use the same autobox

I don't think your average Nissan or Toyota lump would cut it though unless it was out of a truck? My guess you would want at least 4litres capacity so maybe on of the American V8 diesels (which have there own range of problems) then you will need to do something about the auto box. IMO it would have to be dirt cheap to start with which will mean it needs a shed load of welding. Apart from getting a Rolls with a diesel fitted which should upset people unless you are getting cheap fuel you could probably have an lpg conversion fitted and get similar fuel consumption, and if you are using a huge amount of lpg there are ways of getting the costs down even further.

The one thing you do need to remember though is if you do that it will be worth noting if you wanted to sell it.

I'd agree with the 3.0 BMW suggestions, tweaked up properly you've got a nice smooth engine that'll make the car go well, and if done right would probably only be noticed if the bonnet was open, or someone astute enough to notice it doesn't sound quite right.
The 12 valve Cummins is a good lump, with lots of tuning potential, but bloody heavy, relatively limited max rpm, and would likely need a lot more body modification to make it fit.
The GM V8 Diesel is a boat anchor that offers pretty poor power and torque for the capacity and the amount of fuel it drinks, along with block issues etc.
The Nissan and Toyota sixes in 4.2 litre flavour are generally good engines (the Nissan is the better of the two) but unless you can find a complete Land Cruiser or Patrol to lift the engine from it's hard to get a complete one as most breakers will sell the bare engine and ALL the ancillaries separately.
GM V8's tend to be about the ÂŁ1k mark, as do the Japanese sixes, before adding another ÂŁ600-700 for the ancillaries, whilst a Cummins from a DAF truck (with gearbox attached) average between ÂŁ600-800. The BMW M57 is around ÂŁ600 for a fully dressed lump, although you'll need to budget another ÂŁ400 or so for a rallyraidUK wiring harness to allow you to wire it in as a standalone unit.
On price the Cummins and BMW (and I suppose a Merc OM606) come out as leading options, whilst the GM V8 writes itself out of the equation with reliability issues, and similarly to the Japanese sixes doesn't really deliver that much in terms of power/torque/economy for the capacity.
That's how I'd look at it.

Yes I wouldn't disagree but just love the thought of a bullet proof J smoker dragging the old girl around. I like The RR site as no stuffed shirts has banged on about how it would be a terrible thing to do and it better stock and sitting in a garage. These cars are getting chopped up in there hundreds do to being unpractical.
I could diesel lpg it and get 45 to the gallon which is handy as I do 17,000 thousand miles a year up the motorway.

Great advice, what about linking these options to the gearbox?

We use a straight 6 24v cummins engine in our compressors and I believe it's 245 hp but it uses a LOT of fuel and never revs much above 2000 to deliver it. They so seem very robust and run 24/7/365 without major problems. My choice would be the Audi 4.0 v8 tdi but no idea on which slush box to use to mate it up. Superb engine though, still v8 as well, wouldn't be cheap though. V10 Volkswagen derv lump of money no object!!!!

They're getting 2000hp out of the Cummins sixes in the states! That could be fun.
