Possibly my favourite hate word in car descriptions when for sale..... "Rare" However, I know there are some wise bods on this site who would know the answer to the following question about my Audi 80 GLS Estate. Or at least how to find out. I was wondering how many of them have survived in the UK. After reading about the Ford Taunus GXL Coupe of 64Impala, I was intrigued.

It's the first one I've ever seen so I'll put £3.25 on it being 'rareish'.
Might be worth a letter to Audi UK, enclose some piccies and the reg+VIN numbers. They might, on a good day, tell you how many were sold originally. This will give you a starting point, it'll obviously be much rarer if only 2000 were ever sold than 200,000.
You can also write off to a chap at the dvla who can supply current information on how many of each model are on the road. I think Shortcut on here has/had the details but last I heard it was iffy whether they'd supply the info - cutbacks and all. Also I don't know if they'd be able to specify numbers of 80 Estates or just 80's.....

well, your Audi could be a definition of rare ;D The Audi Variant was only made for the UK and the states; i assume, they sold more of them in the states than in the UK, so the RHD variant is even rarer... even the "experts" in germany do not admit the existance of this car....

Hallo Jeurgen, I like your words..... even the "experts" in germany do not admit the existance of this car.... It put a smile on my face right now. As said before, many people who are quite or very knowlegeable about cars have never seen one of these, or heard about it. I was mainly just inquisitive.

The Taunus coupe is going to be rare in the UK. You don´t exactly see them every day on the road over here but at Ford meets there are always plenty of them (probably because i´t costs just as much to do up a coupe as a normal 4 door)
Your Audi is a different kettle of fish, I never seen one of those over here ..let alone in the UK. Yours is definately rare!!!
What are your plans for it? (4.2 V8 ?)

Is it time for an RR limit on rarity? Perhaps less than 50 or 100 in the UK is rare? Less than 20 very rare?
There's no argument if your car is believed to be unique though.

I remember seeing one or two when they were new(er!), my uncle was service manager of the local VW Audi garage so there were a few about. For some reason I remember brown being a more popular colour for the Audi 80s, but my dad had a 1978 Audi 100 5E in that shade of metallic green.

HOW ABOUT 4? ? IS THAT RARE? My mate had a Talbot Horizon in beige. His family owned it from new, it was handed down to him as his first car, it failed the MOT a few years back and it got scrapped.......... ..........picked up a copy of Practical Classic this month to find that the Talbot Horizon was their endangered vehicle of the month, apparently only 4 left registered in the UK. IMO that make them "rare", however just because they are "rare" doesn't make them desirable or expensive! So if you see a Talbot Horizon for sale buy it.

unfortunatly rarity doesnt equate to value or desirability, lots of rare stuff is rare cos it was rubbish, always nice to have something that you don't see everyone else in every day though.

Ebay seems to of made a lot of 'rare' things appear more popular IMO. If its not seen so often it not popular in reality, but when theres a few seasonally or monthly available, items are available. As an example I'd say vics Chrysler is rare, first one i have seen!

i think any mass production car that numbers less than 100 registered should be considered rare, anything under 10 should be on an endangered list and should be as coddeled as a pregnant panda.

well, the Audi wasn't a common sight when it was new, but even more astonishing is the fact, that cars like the Renault 14 (currently registered in germany = 3 !) have gone so fast... like the Horizon, they are gone....

We had a beige Horizon called 'Bonk', I hope it's one of the 4 still going! Can you class Rapids as rare considering everyone seems to own one even though there aren't supposed to be many left? Though I guess there may only be 44 left on the road, but 100,044 left in peoples back gardens.

My VW K70 is the last right-hand-drive LS 1.8 model anywhere, ever! (allegedly - there might be one other kicking round somewhere, although it hasn't been seen for a while).
Guess that makes it fairly deserving holder of the "rare" tag! ;D

It's all very well to say that rarity is no guarantee of value, but it's too easy to let dwindling numbers pass by unnoticed.
It's absolutely astonishing that there are only 4 Talbot Horizons left, considering it was a fairly common car in its day. Any car with that sort of rarity should have some value otherwise they'll go and that'll be it.
It's only people's ignorance of survival rates that gives rise to this situation and the DVLA have a lot to answer for in terms of not keeping us better informed of those cars that are endangered. No doubt central government is quite happy to let cars like this die out.
It would do well to publish a list of the UK's rarest cars (<100 say) rather than hide behind faceless legislation.
