alright guys. i plan to go to the states next year, for 6 mths/year. just to look around mainly, but i want to be able to work to top up funds etc. i plan to take my miami blue peugeot 309 gti with me. because ive always wanted to go on an adventure with my car. (i know a rental would be easier but thats not the point.) my question is does any one know where i could look about shipping it out there, and what papers id need. i can find info on permanantly exporting it, but obviously id want to bring it back at some point. (if someone understands their visa's too, id like to chat to you too.) pug by sportshatch man, on Flickr pug2 by sportshatch man, on Flickr pictures to sweeten the deal on a reply.

its an awesome idea but i think the cost would be crazy compared to renting something while your out there - renting a car in the states is dirt cheap if you have it over a long time
you would have to pay for the export costs - including all the loading and handling at the port and probably pay duty on arrival - and then the same costs when you ship it back.
i work in importing and exporting but have never dealt with anything like that but the comapny we use is called Neptune Shipping Agency - they are a smallish family business and will be able to do it for you and failing that should at least be able to provide you with advice
failing that the other company we use is Banks&Lloyd same deal but a slightly larger company - both of these companies have helped us ship in and out of the states.
i wouldnt use a large shipping company like DHL. companies like that are so big you will probably not be able to track your shipment properly because your shipment will be borderline ignored because its so small fry to them - and i guarantee that if something were to go wrong you would never get it rectified

Personally if I was going for to that expense and for that length of time i'd get a left hooker from France. I'm sure being rhd in the states would be a p.i.t.a. Oh and I think it has to be 30+ yrs old to be allowed in on historic reasons as it almost certainly is not type approved (i.e sold there originally meeting their regs and laws etc)

No age limit on vehicles to bring in,drive round and leave ,so to speak. If you look up ExpeditionPortal.com amd go on the forum, there is loads of info on there about what you're asking. ( i'd paste a link, but my Ipad and I don't see eye to eye when trying that!!)

I had visions of taking a quick Ax 16v turbo over and driving it around beating everything and confusing Americans but it would probably end up very broken and i'd be shot in a Redneck drag race for pinks (no good sir it does not have a pink slip, the V5 is red these days......) ^_^

What about buying something silly out there instead, you could always ship it back to sell on

You would be looking for a B1/B2 visa, but you won't be able to earn any money whilst in the US.
The visa process can take up to six months. At a minimum, you will have to visit a US embassy (either London or Belfast in the UK) for an interview. You'll also need to prove means as to how you will pay for things whilst you're in the US (bearing in mind you won't be able to be employed), and an address that you'll be staying at.
Your other option is to enter with an ESTA. That allows you to stay for 90 days at a time. Again, you won't be allowed to earn money whilst in the US.

I did this last year, but I bought a 2.6(!) litre 190E when I got there. DO NOT BUY A USED CAR IN CALIFORNIA. The "Cash for Clunkers" scheme means anything worth under a grand gets traded in for a grand, so the cheapest cars you can get are $1400ish. Unfortunately, it also means the cheaper end of the scale are curse word cars... It did a big-end on the I5. Thankfully, outside a Hertz rent-a-car. So I had to do the rest of my trip in a Chrysler 200, which sucked big time. Rental place wired the TC on full-time, so it wouldn't even skid.

Cheap, used American cars under $4000 are 90% of the time complete garbage. We severely overvalue junk here sadly. Such as all of the engine-less, rusted bodies of miatas for $2000+ in my area, for example.

I did the same a few years back, flew to Detroit and bought a LT1 Buick Roadmaster estate there. Fake wood and everything. Got it for $2000, sold for $2300. RWD, V8, plus a two-person bed fits in the back easy which saved a lot on the trip. I had to get new tires for it and bypass the immobiliser, other than that it ran 22mpg (US) without fault for 18000 miles. Can't recommend it enough, plus it was pretty quick for what it was.
Buying as a non US citizen is possible, insuring is quite a bit trickier without an address.

I love the idea of getting a uk reg car over here for a hoon, however costs are high for such things! I'd go for book your travel to somewhere, and get on Craigslist and eBay to see what is available and arrange for a view / purchase when you land or get someone like one of us to inspect something and get it in advance.
do not buy something that you haven't seen in person. as above Americans overvalue curse word. because curse word must be worth something, right? plus repairs done to cars here tend to be a little questionable. And people are dishonest.

No Idea but sounds fun! I am hoping to move to Oz by end of next yr and hopefully take my car with me but haven't looked into shipping etc yet. We looked in this about 10 yrs ago .... And if successful we were going to take our car over, but friends over there said unless its a valuable model not to bother, the costs out weigh the cars value, and what it would have cost me in shipping it,import duties, cleaning charges* etc .... I could gave bought a car over there! *no matter how much you try to de-contaminate the vehicle, customs say its not clean enough, and get it cleaned when it arrives ..... And charge you. I know overlanders have this issue a lot!

Aus and NZ take their Bio security a lot more seriously than we do, which is fair enough to be honest, I have known cars and bikes get into NZ without needing cleaning again though, not looked at Aus for a long time.
