Quite possibly the wankiest term in 'modern customising'. Ok, I accept that, like a few people here, I'm in a minority of old duffers that remember a time when building a car wasn't about seeking approval or being part of the 'scene' but was about doing something that made you happy because it was for you and nobody else. You can truly trip over the amount of 'moderns' with false patina and wibblepoo roof racks on them. Its almost like they haven't given any thought at all to what they are doing to the car but have placed utter importance on doing exactly what many others have done equally as bad because its 'THE SCENE' Look, I realise that negativity is the destroyer of threads but just looking at some of the builds on here like THAT Thames Camper, the Allegro getting modern power, the Harvest Gold standard Maxi ( an absolute honey ) and Dr plums keeping the classics of the future on the road, not to mention umpteen other creative builds says that the 'Scene' is not where you really want to be if you want to be driving something cool. Individuality rules, right? It would be hard to disagree with you, hence it was in quotation marks in the first place! This is exactly the problem: Its almost like they haven't given any thought at all to what they are doing to the car but have placed utter importance on doing exactly what many others have done equally as bad because its 'THE SCENE' I'll openly admit that whilst I thought long and hard about what shade of grey to use, there was little time where I thought about how I would feel driving it. I guess it comes down to insecurities whereby the person can only enjoy their own car if others accept it. I've been there, it sucks.

Individuality rules, right? But you could say much the same about the legions of pastel painted "Cal look" bugs in the 80s or all the Jacked up, slot mag equipped cars a decade earlier. You could probably apply it to all the 50s yanks on 5 spokes. Each one looks good (if you like that sort of thing) and stands out among the regular daily traffic but when you see a row of them at a show then it gets a bit dull.

I too hate the way in the car modifying 'scene' different always equals good
When someone says they're going to do something different, it normally roughly translates into, "I'm going to do something really stupid and the only reason nobody has done it before is because it's a really stupid thing to do"
It will then invariably be followed up with comments like these from fellow scenesters
"Oh that's great mate nice to see you doing something different" "Not to my taste but good to see someone being individual" "Proper tidy that bruv"

IMHO, the fake rust looks better than some of the horrendous body-kitted Max Power type cars of the late 90's/early 00's
