Well I've been lurking round here long enough so I guess it's about time I contributed!
The whole desire for 914's started what must have been 6 or so years ago now when I saw one parked up in the for sale area at the Volksworld show. Needless to say this little bright yellow thing really stood out amongst the various VW's. Having perved over it for what was probably too long I decided I needed to have one and whilst this was in budget, at just shy of 17 years old, insurance was not an option! Now this was a shame, because this UK registered on the road car was £4500. Fast forward several years and I've had shared ownership of a Land Rover 101 which I followed up with a Standard 8, insurance has plummeted and I'm getting the sports car itch and start looking for a MK3 Spitfire to take the place of the Standard. Nothing is coming up anywhere near budget and I start to just search the ebay classics area where sure enough a local 914 pops up... Now the desire has been reignited but this car is over £8k and it needs a full respray, recommission and an interior, looking at 914's in the UK and the case was the same everywhere, it's looking like I missed the boat on getting a car at a decent price years ago!
Fast forward a few months and my dad is heading to New York with work for a week so I get him to check the local classifieds there for me, low and behold a few days later he sends me a link to one in North Carolina, phone calls were made, money was paid (a very long way under £8k!!!) and the rest is history, I own a 914!
Delays with paperwork, Thanksgiving, Christmas and then the weather mean it's been a couple of months since I paid for the thing and I'm starting to get impatient but on the 19th on January, I'm finally stood at the docks in Southampton waiting for my car, and here it is...
Now the last couple of weeks worth of photo's I will need to upload later, but they will include suspension console replacement, engine tray replacement, battery tray replacement and soon to be floor replacement! Thank god it's still only cost me half that of a UK car...
