Well I've stripped and rebuilt the front end, lost a coil and done the camber mods and it's feeling better already.
I think the rear is running soft self-levelling springs and standard shocks, so some replacement shocks should see it a lot firmer and where I want it.

How much does one coil drop it for future reference ? I had a problem spending out on springs when none of the manufacturers or suppliers would give me and technical info on what they were selling. By removing a coil you have more than likely ended up with what you would get in a spring kit. The car is a bit lower and the spring rate has been increased. Glad to hear it feels better though, did you fit new shocks on the front ?

I have just ordered some 40mm springs for mine, will probably get some Bilstein B4's too - is there anything else I may as well replace while installing them? I was going to buy some new top mounts for the front end.

Only things I can think of are the bottom ball joints that are sort of part of the job. I unbolted the struts from them when changing the springs and shocks as it saves breaking the taper. With the strut off you will be able to tell how worn they are. If you have ABS you can disconnect the wires to the sensors at a connector inside the engine bay and then pull the wires through. Another thing I found useful is to bolt the strut back into a spare wheel to make it easier to work on, you can stand on it when undoing the shock retainer as well.

Not sure I forgot to take measurements prior to cutting d'oh! It still looks factory as the bottom coil is slightly smaller, happy to get measurements against yours if you give me a reference point. I imagine it's 20mm or so.
The front shocks pressurised fine so I left them.
Topmounts and bearings are worth it, the bearings will most likely separate and ball bearings will go everywhere. I cleaned, regreased and reassembled my original ones, but only £20 for new.
Definitely disconnect ABS sensors and don't try to remove, as I've just found out it's a costly mistake when they break.

I could probably manage another broken one, I will just see if I can get it off my car.....
How much are they ? Having never taken mine out which bit is it the breaks I don't think the bolt looked like it would ever undo on mine.

26 quid cheap unbranded foreign one then 60-100 for proper Bosch.
Bolt is fine it's when twisting them out the plastic separates and leaves the magnet and pick up in the hub.

Partsforvolvo have top mounts pretty cheap - are they an OK company for parts?

They list the strut mounts as being made by a Swedish manufacturer so I guess they will be Scantech ones.
Scantech parts get mixed reviews so I am never sure what they are like. I wasn't keen on the saucer shaped bushes I bought for mine but the propshaft mount I got has been OK.
I try to get parts from the OE manufacturer if the Volvo version is more expensive. Not sure about suspension parts but the Nivomats on the back would have been supplied by Boge, they might have supplied the strut mounts as well. Febi might be another company to try but it's always down to where they buy from. Hopefully it isn't the same company in China or wherever as is the case with most water pumps now.

What would you buy? Any source you know about? To be honest I don't know without looking into whats available and then it would just be a guess really. I normally find out what they cost from Volvo to begin with. FRF Motors, a Volvo dealer in Wales, do discounts for Owners club Forum members so they are a bit cheaper than a lot of dealers and are very helpful as well. From there I would check out companies who were likely to be OE suppliers like Boge. IPD in the states supply Mayle. I did an extensive search to try and find out who supplied Volvo with water pumps for the 940. I bought a genuine Volvo one thinking it would last as well as the original. It turned out that Volvo found a new supplier a few years ago and I was rather shocked to find it was Quinten Hazell ! If you buy a Quinten Hazell water pump that costs a fair bit less do you get the same spec bearings and seals that go into the Volvo one ? I wasn't able to find that out. To make things more complicated Quinten Hazell sold off the water pump devision so the new company called Mark Water Pumps now supplies Quinten Hazell and Volvo ! Sorry this has gone off on a bit of a tangent but I spotted Quinten Hazell supply top mounts. I couldn't say if they have ever been supplied to Volvo though but it just goes to show you can never really tell what you are getting. By the time you have spent ages looking round you could have probably bought and fitted some !
