I'm lucky enough to have had the previous owner of my house build an inspection pit in the garage and fit an RSJ in the ceiling for an engine hoist.
Only downside is the houses were built in the 70's so it's hard to fit modern cars in width of the garage. Retro stuff fits easy enough though, oh and I have to empty everything out the garage before I can use the pit.
To be honest it rarely gets used, quicker to do most things in the drive.

Is that because new house garages in the UK are not designed for parking cars in but rather as a place to stow things? You certainly couldn't fit a lot of new cars in them and actually get out of the door thats for sure ! I'm pretty sure the new "Mini" Traveller thats lives near me is wider than the garage Most houses on my road have a garage and i don't think anyone has a car in one, just used for storage. Thats partly because the houses are too small as well so there is nowhere to store anything like bikes,BBQs,tools etc.The gardens are tiny too,so unless you want to lose that bit of space even having a big shed is difficult. The developers just want to cram as many "rabbit hutchs" in as possible on a small footprint. Some owners have lost the garage altogether and had them converted to an extra living room. Older houses with a garage tend to be much better and 1960's built bungalows are often really good as they are usually on big plots.

Typically, I've always been a driveway worker, come whatever the weather; I'm lucky enough to have a double garage now, but until I remove a centre column in it I still can't actually work on vehicles inside.

I rented a garage workshop unit that I later found out I could't get my van into. I ended up buying and not finishing more curse word off. I feel your pain.. Luckily for me one's come up that I can actually use, and that's where most of my stuff is getting done now.

In the garage at home, but the space also houses bikes, push chairs, lawn mowers, tumble dryer etc, so little space to work on the car Used to work in the farm's workshop where i grew up, complete with pit, overhead RSJ with block & tackle etc, but since got married & moved away

I use a council garage which I rent and the space outside it providing the garage neighbours don't need to get in/out. I have used an abandoned car wash as shelter before to change the waterpump on my old Toledo, luckily it was down a road where normal traffic has no reason to go otherwise I'm sure I'd have been shoed out of there. If not at my garage then in communal carparks at mine/friends/nans places, where ever really.

When at my mum and dads in late teens and early 20's I worked in the road, up the drive in all weathers... Even rebuilt my EJ22t lump for my Impreza Type R in the living room!!! Since buying my first house in 2007, most work is carried out under a carport or in a garage.

I started off my parents drive as others have, welding, building engines etc, then when I moved out I still went back there for big jobs but did smaller stuff on the road outside my house. When we moved it was supposed to be to a house with a garage, the perfect house didn't have a garage but the space was there to put one so the 7 got built and painted there. Its a bit bigger than a single but not as big as a double and it is a funny shape as it follows the property boundary. I also can use the massive workshop I run at work with a couple of lifts and my vast amount of Snap on tools but I have to fit stuff in around my busy work schedule so it tends to only be for smaller jobs.

I'm another driveway worker. I've done the basics like oil changes etc. up to breaking a car down to its bare components, removing engines, rebuilding cars, fixing friend's cars and so on. These days however I would love to work in a garage ; nosy neighbours and having a car stood on stands for almost a month does get annoying. Yes I could move it's also nice to live somewhere that you don't have to worry about not seeing your car again.
I do have a lockup but it is in a very iffy part of a town and it is tiny ; I can barely get out of it and I am not a large person. I have done some jobs there, but very very few from a security point of view.

I'm another that uses my driveway. I have a garage, it's quite big, it's double the length of a normal garage but quite thin. So a car will go in but there's barely room to walk around it so I don't ever use it for car work, plus it's full of motorbikes. A few years ago swapping a doing a 1.6 to 2.0 pinto swap. Got some funny looks of the locals and neighbours, they all drive modern cars. It's rare these days I'm out working on cars. The last few cars I have had just work and run and don't need anything done. When I had my old fords I was always out fixing something or other.

Respect to those who persevere on the drive. I've worked from a lock-up, the folks' single garage when I was still home, the carport of a damned-good mate.
The past 5 years I've had a brilliant garage, car-port and space to work from. It certainly makes life a lot easier.

Had a look through my neighbour's engineering workshop today. It's huge. He's a big time farmer and does all his own tractor mechanicing in there. I totally have shed envy now.

I'm spoiled, but it is also my Business. Room for 3 cars across the back, 1 more round the corner, two workspaces in front of them, then the ramp, I can store one under that at night providing it's mobile. Then space for 6+ in the yard. More or less every tool I ever need and a separate 'parts department' full of racking. It's always a mix of customers and my own stuff. At home I only actually have 2 driveway spaces so this is essential really.

My place. Three cars wide, with barely room for 2 projects in front. Might sound spoiled, but i really want another larger workshop, haha... They never get big enough!

True that. A man can never have to much garage space.

My biggest regret is never having learned how to do bodywork. I'm ok with mechanics, I make it up as I go along, as seen above cortina engine swap, I had no idea how to swap an engine, but I learned as I went along and it worked out ok. But I have no idea how to do body work, particularly structural stuff. So I leave well alone. It's my single biggest hurdle when it comes to working on cars.

Have a little unit, got very lucky with it. Its tight in there, sadly no matter how big a space you have its never big enough is it!

I also work on the driveway doing anything from simple servicing to engine swaps. Don't mind at all in the summer but would much rather have a garage/lockup in winter, otherwise I'll just wait for warmer weather before I do anything else. My gf's dad has a massive garage which I'm envious of!
