Where is this invisible line ??

Another forum I frequent counts retro as anything pre 1990 but there is some flexibility and later stuff is sometimes permitted if it is a bit unusual. That said there are a lot of '90s and some '80s and older unrestored survivor vehicles still in daily use here because we don't salt the roads.

In my opinion retro is from mid 70's to mid 90's. Anything pre 75 is a classic to me.

I think we shouldn't have this argument again (weren't we just doing this the other day) and go back to posting pics of our own and others cool cars.

imo a classic car is age related, pre 80ish but its not just age because, for example, an escort cosworth is a classic, as is a mk1 Subaru Imprezza. Retro is more of a style thing, but then different people have different ideas, so its all down to what you make of it. If its old tho, its old.

For me, and this is only my opinion it as much a state of mind as anything else. The word 'retro' derives from the Latin prefix retro, meaning backwards, or in past times it can be used to describe objects, like cars, motorcycles etc and attitudes from the recent past that no longer seem to be what would currently be described to be modern. It suggests a fundamental change in the way we relate to the past. The term retro appears to be different from more traditional forms of revivalism, retro suggests an almost ironic longing consideration of the recent past. So pretty much anything that could be considered to be 'old tech' is retro, and as car design moves fairly quickly retro could be anything that is as new as a ten year old car, or possibly newer than that! I think the term retro car doesn't really have a clear definition in relation to the age of the vehicle, unlike the term classic car which in the UK atleast is a term generally referred to as a vehicle of at least 25 years old, however some people define a car 15-25 years old as a 'modern classic' which perhaps is another term for retro car? To confuse matters further you also get 'retro style' this is style that is consciously derivative or imitative of trends, modes, fashions, or attitudes of the recent past. So for examples of this in the automotive world would be cars like the VW Beetle, Fiat 500, 2005-2010 Ford Mustang, and even the styling on the Jaguar X-type harks back to Jaguars past. Retro style refers to new things that display characteristics of the past. It is mostly the recent past that retro seeks to recapitulate, focusing on the products, fashions and artistic styles produced since the Industrial Revolution, of Modernity. Does this make sense, or am i just twittering on? My current 'Retro' car sandwiched between my other two previous 'Retro' cars in my thread.

Not this again! If you have to ask "Is my car retro?" It probably isn't.

Mine starts at the front bumper and ends a bit behind the back wheels..... Damnit Dez you beat me to it. Thought I'd illustrate it using a photo of a modern car...

Like my dad said to me it becomes retro, iconic or what ever you choose to brand it as once you apply rose tinted glasses to what was ordinary or curse word cars of there time.

I said last time it depended how old you are and hence what you feel nostalgic about will differ as a result. Someone mentioned bold design or certain styling traits which are obviously no longer applied to new motors have a big bearing on it as well..i agree with that.
Pop up lights, wedge shaped designs or just slightly odd and uncommon cars all fit in for me. For later model stuff i would throw in things like the XM,Vel Satis and Multipla, all cars that gave me a WTF is that moment the first time i saw one.I had the same feeling with the Fiat Strada and the jellymould Sierra way back when they were new.
I reckon it generally takes longer for a mundane family car to become retro than a sporting car as they tend to have bolder styling. I'd class most sporting cars from the 90's as retro now.

I like w202 mercs I think there retro...others don't but I like them so that's all that matters I guess, I don't go to shows anymore due to big egos, and mines better than yours attitudes, but retro rides seems the best place to be if your into different stuff, this site opened my mind to other cars than fords I've owned a scirocco, a xj8 jaguar and today's buy an mgf, all thanks to seeing those type of cars on here, so my answer if you like it and you think it's retro that's all that matters

The term retro is used the same as the word 'cool'.
Is you car cool? To some, yes, to other, maybe not.
Retro is not defined by age, there is no magical date when a car stops being one thing and becomes retro.
It's a mind set.
