ive jsut bought my first diesel in 22 years of driving too! also late 1980s tech see, the thing that surprised me is that back then there was so much hate for diesel engines, the noise, lack of power, tractor this and that. mine is a 1.7 normally aspirated and has the same power as a 1.3 petrol, that said it has 1.6 levels of torque from nothing and gets a lick on with a fairly flat torque curve. now diesels are more de rigueur and will do 70mpg while tugging our retros round, its all good. do you find that the acceleration is the same with a small bit of pedal as it is with foot to floor? weird sensation, its like the pedal is no longer an accelerator, rather foot adjustable target speed Excellent choice Sir! I totally agree with everything you've said about the way it drives, and yes I find the same with the throttle pedal I think this applies to most old cars tbh. I'm guessing yours is a GM 1.7 Diesel? EDIT; Just noticed your signature Doh!

Amazing you've squeezed 15's under there. Have you had passengers in the back? Looks spot on by the way! Thanks mate Yep I've had 2 adults in the back and there was no rubbing at all even on a motorway journey at high speed. So I will lower it now as I think even with the wheel arches fitted it will need it. I have found a chap named Kris B in PSA circles who lowers the car for only around £90 labour! That's less than £25 a corner (I know the rear is not independent) so not even worth getting your hands dirty for! I've also got 15mm spacers on the rear (as the 10mm items were not in stock at the time) so will change these for 10mm types if there are issues with clearance with the current ones.

A little update for those who may be interested A few weeks back I am driving to work on the M25, foot down in the fast lane (yes it can hold it's own here!) when I hear the engine suddenly become louder!! The exhaust had just broken! It was raining, I had my shirt and tie on, and had to tie it up with some spare speaker wire I had in the glovebox. This dark pic I took in the rain explains.. I limped the 20 miles back home down the lanes and took the E28 to work. A new exhaust was ordered and while I was at it, I thought I'd fit a new brake hose as was getting binding brakes on the N/S front wheel. Yes I had cleaned/greased the slide pins and even the 'ears' on the pads to ensure free movement. The exhaust went on eventually after many cuts and injuries to my arms due to it's tight location at the manifold. The brake pipe which was connected to said brake hose was not so straight forward. I have a proper brake pipe spanner but even this was no good. The pipe nut was so rusted that it was like one made of cheese. So a new brake pipe set was ordered as I thought I would eventually do all of them. Next step was to see if the bleed nipple on caliper was now cheese or not. Yep, it bloody well is. Hardly took any force for it to just sheer straight off. A common issue looking at the PSA forums. So a new caliper was ordered. I thought I may as well do the O/S front as well so ordered a brake hose for that too, but could I find a Bendix caliper for a 205 O/S?? Hell no. None of this work could be carried out without fitting new discs and pads so they were ordered too. Once all this was on the car it was looking like this. During the week or 2 it was off the road, the MOT expired. So off I went with my new parts fitted, and considering the advisories last year (with previous owner) were only related to the brakes, I was confident a pass was imminent. But No! It failed on N/S front wheel bearing, O/S inner CV gaiter, O/S headlamp beam pattern incorrect (no bulb was not upside down) and broken wheel bolt in hub O/S fron wheel. I admit I knew about this last point but I was buggered if I could get it out. Even when I had the discs off there was nothing to grab hold of and it was rusted solid in the hub. So as I had manflu at the time and had already messed about with the previous jobs, I gave it to a local trusted garage to carry out the work. It was more expensive than I anticipated but I just wanted my Pug back on the road asap. A new flange had to be fitted as well as the bearing due to my high speed commuting on a knackered bearing. The broken bolt could not be extracted so a new flange was also fitted to the O/S front, along with a new bearing! Of course the gearbox oil had to be renewed as the CV gaiter meant pulling the shaft of the box. I fitted a new headlight also. So all is now well at last

excellent! i expect the new caliper would fix the seizing. only think i've experienced that has enough force to actually slow the car or make the brakes heat up is the actual piston rusting.

I think it was actually the hose collapsing which was causing the seized brakes. The piston was free and not rusty. I had many attempts at sorting and the hose was the last thing to try. A caliper had to be bought due to the bleed nipple breaking off Could be worse I suppose At least it's on the road saving me shed loads on fuel costs.

Looking good mate, how much drop is that? I have just bought bilstein shocks and some 40 lowering springs for mine. Hoping to get it all done in the next few weeks.

Thanks mate, I'm not sure on how much it's been lowered. I bought Apex springs and had a choice of 30mm or 50mm lower. After some thought, I went for the 30mm springs as theya re the same item for the GTI models too. So I figured if it lowers a GTI 30mm, then it will probably lower mine 50mm! The new springs were nearly half the length of the originals So good job I did not get the 50mm ones. Although I had read a few guides on lowering the Rear of the car, I found that this chap www.krisb.co.uk/ does them for not a lot of dosh. It was a no brainer for me. I visited him with my springs in hand, and left 2 hours later with a lower car. Kris knew how much to adjust the bar after he fitted the front springs.

Nothing major to report. Car still going strong, it's on 169k miles now so has covered 17k miles in my ownership. Had the fuel lines replaced a couple of months back due to corrosion and leak. I removed the PTS stripes also about 6 months ago as didn't like them.

now diesels are more de rigueur and will do 70mpg while tugging our retros round, its all good spoke too bloody soon there didnt i. nothing but headlines and hate the last few months. hoping retros/historics get a bit of leeway being statistically insignificant (compared to euro 5 diesel cars i mean)

That's the way I like a 205 with white steelies. The car looks great now although I did like the stripes. Ps that's a nice looking Mk1 Golf parked beside yours.

Yep I also hope that classics will not be ruled out under any new legislation. I'm sure my non turbo, low fuel pressure diesel, is cleaner than all the modern cars I see on my commute chucking out huge clouds of black smoke. I won't be giving up the Pug if I can help it.

Nothing exciting I intend to keep a log of all work done to the car on this thread. Car now on 179k miles but will not be clocking at the usual rate as I left my job. I've managed to find a caliper for the driver side now, so as per further up the page, this was replaced along with hose and brake line. I wanted to do these as the original calipers had sheared off bleed nipples and brake hoses that would not come out no matter how much I tried. It's also had the starter motor rebuilt but I didn't take any pics of that. I think I now need to replace the driveshaft intermediate bearing (joy of joys!) as it's making a bit of a racket.

Very nice car! My N reg is on a post on here too. Had it since 96 and cant let go! Peugeot clearly had loads of car parts left over and merrily carried on putting M, N and even P reg cars together before shutting shop and concentrating on their 106 and 306 models. Mine is great fun still.

You are right, they are still fun and hats off to you for keeping it so long.

It's a typical bearing that fails and is often overlooked. I should have had it replaced when I had the 2 wheel bearings done. Not making good noises at the moment

Love what you have done with your 205! I have just got one and bought some 15x6 steels for it (see reader's rides). Looks like I'll need spacers on the back like you, did you have any issues at the front? Thanks.
