I might be lucky but rust doesn't seem to be an issue thankfully. Underside is very clean and the only signs are a slight bubbling on one arch, fingers crossed! Didn't do much today, gave the battery a charge, cleaned the plates (quite bad), cleaned the fuses and the contacts. One mud flap missing, found in the boot

Axeboy The body on these are solid enough ,but wings and wheel arches are a problem .Owners just don't clean them out enough .So you end up with the rust at the end of the day First job i do with every car i purchase, is to clean out all the rubbish at the back of the arch lip and waxoil them .And for places i cannot get to spray waxoil in a spray can.You can see my car in the avitar but it also as rust in that area .New aftermarket wings are rubbish ,well i am yet to find a pair for mine .New cast £250 each .I have been looking for 3 years for a pair of second hand ,you can get them if your local to the seller .As delivery is not a good idea .Had one a few weeks ago .Original wing on ebay ,on its arival it was damaged .Sent it back for a refund. Good luck with the project .

Appreciate that, i'll do the same. Added to the list! Today I just washed it, cleaned the air filter cover which was in pretty poor state and checked the electric aerial which wasn't working. Seems the actual aerial isn't connected to the teeth/chain so I'll order a new one later. Also added the missing mudflap back on. Also checked the tyres which I didn't do properly when bought (in terms of matching) and the bonus is they are all the same Vredestein. The radio is a newish type and does the job, but again, a little bonus is it had an SD slot for Mp3 behind the face.

You will need to google it from the Google search engine.

420 Switchable Automatic Gearbox - I assume standard? - Yes, I've never seen one without the switch. 441 Electric Steering Column - I understand this to be a very expensive, unusual and desirable option. So, on my todo/done list I have: Slightly lumpy - injectors cleaned - When I spoke to the seller of this car he said he'd been told by a local garage that it could be a camshaft problem, I was hugely skeptical of that based on the symptoms he described. If the injector cleaning doesn't cure the lumpiness inspect the HT leads. Even the relatively simple M103 is sensitive (in my option) to the HT leads and rotor being in great shape and the routing of the leads gives the 'main' lead from the dizzy an unfortunate piece of metal to rub against and then arc against. Slow central locking - investigate - It's probably just an air leak. I'd ray rule out the boot being the source of the leak and then try the easy bits (under the seat etc) and just live with it. I found it hugely invasive to do. The boot is important to check because I've had W124s where the air line has failed and they available keys wouldn't unlock the boot so, err, that was that... It has a very slight rumble at speed - I find they're so quiet that rubbish tyres can be to blame. Swap front to back and see if you can shift the sound around to rule out anything more serious. door check straps going off like a gun as you open the doors I have LOADS of spares of these, I even have a choice of colours. For some reason they don't shift on eBay at all but I've sold a few via the Benz forums because lots of people join the forums when they go bad. If they're in good shape just get some grease on them and forget about it.

Appreciate that, huge help. On the injectors, it seems to be running well, I've not noticed any issues since cleaning but I appreciate the tip on the leads, I might do them anyway. On the central locking, it takes maybe 2 seconds after locking for all doors to lock.. maybe this is normal or is it too slow? I'll switch the tyres over, again, thanks for the tip. To be fair, I'm really quite pedantic about it, no-one else notices and it really is very slight. I just hate these little things

Maybe TurboDieselWeasel can express an opinion on how long it should take for perfect central locking to operate?

1-2 sec sounds normal. They don't close instantly like electric ones do with a sharp 'clunk' It should be a soft progressive noise.

I don't suppose it's you who has the Edinburgh area W124 with one odd 8 hole alloy and three 15 hole alloys? It's not I'm afraid! There are a LOT of us in Edinburgh with W124s though. I drove across town one weekend and counted 7 W124s on a trip of only a few miles a couple months ago without trying. The capital of old retro Mercness! I picked mine up from Edinburgh!

There are loads of them around Edinburgh but the owners don't seem to wave to other W124 owners. maxypriest, where in Ed did you get yours from? Oh, and I found the car with the odd wheel. Left a note with my number offering a matching wheel, got no reply...

You did say it was lumpy, did you cure it? If not i would look for leaks on a small bore vacuum pipes or elbows and joints, The mighty vac is ideal to checking these out .

Well, it seems fine now yeah. When I first got it, it did feel a bit lumpy at low revs/idle. The garage cleaned the injectors and done something else (cant remember) and to be fair it is running pretty well now.
I'll keep an eye on it though. Ive not had a chance this week to drive it much
Ive got a new issue for the list now too... air is only blowing hot, doh

Ive got a new issue for the list now too... air is only blowing hot, doh Check the sensor for the duovalve in the gap above the interior light/sunroof switch. The duovalve fails to hot but they're usually quite reliable (especially at the age and mileage of yours) so a sensor/switch/signal failure is more likely.

Finally had a little time to do some bits, been good:
Check the duovalve, fuses and connections, didn't find an issue but its been working since New elec aerial fitted, seal was brittle too, working great Had water coming in near the boot, no loads, but removed the rear lights and resealed them The number plate surround had old holes which water might have got in, sealed and plate added back on without the chrome surround Front doors re-adjusted a touch to close better
Just a load of little things, been driving it more this week. Good old thing.

Looking nice. My air filter cover was pretty dirty but I took some wire wool to it and its made a difference without taking the paint off
