Been a project I've had kicking around for a couple of years, thought I'd dig it out and get it finished. Old Rover V8 block I've had left over from a long dead project, used for storing gas bottles in for a while.... Took it down the workshop along with 4 of the pistons..... Degreased, jet washed and in the blast cabinet..... Unlike most other V8 tables that are available I'm not mounting the pistons to the top of the block, they don't look right to me there. Instead I've cut down some steel rings...... Which I've welded in part way down the bores..... So the pistons can be mounted like this (more upright when properly bolted down into position)..... Found some glass that's about the right size for the top....

Looking good. I was lazy when I built mine and bolted the pistons to the top face, but then I was living in a 10th floor apartment at the time so think getting the welder out might have been frowned upon

Excellent! And I agree that the pistons should be mounted internally.
Inspiration for me to do my four-cylinder table...

yep, that's cool! looks like it would double as a wine or beer cooler and there's space on the end for a bottle opener too...... something like this perhaps?

Cheers for the comments, yes a wine bottle will fit in the spare cylinders, putting a bit of tube in where the crank was to stop them dropping in too far, glass will need to be lifted to get the bottle out though.

Again, thanks for the comments. Table is quite low with the pistons sat inside the bores, had to try and think of a way of raising it, so I got these...... Not sure yet, it's not quite how I pictured it, if they were a bit bigger, say 3" instead of 2" I think it would look better but that's the size pool balls are.

Hi, you could try cricket or baseballs or the other four pistons.

Cricket/baseballs aren't as cool as pool balls, plus I don't think they're as easy to work with as ones made of resin. Pistons would be good but I only kept 4 of them, although thinking about it I've got some from an XE somewhere in the shed.....

Try American pool balls, they're a lot bigger than the usual UK stuff

Looking awesome! Why not make some more piston legs? Get it even higher then!

A while ago I spent sometime at MX5parts waiting while they fitted a new hood, I did some work at thsi table. I prefer your V8 version though.

^^^Nice, but not V8 cool Try American pool balls, they're a lot bigger than the usual UK stuff Never even realized they were bigger, thanks, but it seems they're only about 57mm so not much bigger - Russian billiard balls at 68mm would be good but not quite so easy to get hold of and no 8 ball of course. I'm going to get it all together as it is and see how high it sits, maybe have a re-think if it's not high enough.......

Looking awesome! Why not make some more piston legs? Get it even higher then! Only got some pistons left over from another engine which are quite thin, and no conrods either, so probably won't lift it much higher than the balls - a combination of the 2 maybe.......

Had a go at polishing one of the piston CROWNs this afternoon, hasn't turned out too bad for half an hours work, a bit of Autosol should finish it off nicely...... Struggled to get a good picture of the shine, RHS is after a little work with emery paper, LHS is polished.
