I'm going to start this thread by saying I wasn't even looking for a new car. But after going to the Porsche museum on the way back from Rome I cant not say I was swayed by the 80s selection they had. I've always liked 944s though, and my mum has had 2 which were awesome. So I actually tried to find a 924 as a project to do on the side, which turned into a full scale month long search for a car after my dad found out as he is well into his Porsches. Saw plenty cheap ones up by me but it seemed like traveling dahn sahf was the best bet as they are much more reasonably priced. Eventually settled on this one as it seemed to be a pretty average 944 price, but had a full service history and appeared to be fairly clean. Paid a deposit and arranged to pick it up on Saturday. I'd also been looking at wheels because I hate twists, especially on a 944! I found a nice set of cookie cutters on ebay, which are in fact my favourite 944 wheel, in Glasgow which would only be a slight detour from the route home so that was perfect! So on Saturday I got a plane from Aberdeen to Birmingham, then 2 trains to Kidderminster. Before I left the bloke gave me a 2L bottle off water as 'he'd never had it on the motorway really, so wanted to make sure i would get home'. Nice gesture, although it did seem a bit disconcerting. Popped the address in Glasgow in the sat nav and headed off at 1:00 to do 460 miles. Stopped in Lancaster for lunch Then after an hour or so of English motorway traffic I finally had open road to Scotland. The car was performing really well for something with 172k on it. The cigarette lighter wasn't charging the sat nav so I turned this off until Glasgow. Got to his house at about 7 and couldnt open the boot as the release wouldnt work. Luckily one of the spare keys fitted it! and the boot got filled with rubbery wheely goodness. Ended up getting home at 10:20 and then going on a night out, but thats another story. Anyway, so I had today to have a little play about with the car. Checked the fuse box and theres a single 15 amp fuse that controlled the boot glass, interior light and cig lighter. 3 things I knew didnt work. New fuse and they all work fine The radio also wasnt saving stations. The permanent 12v was all wired up correctly so I chucked in the old radio from the girlfriends civic and it works a charm. Plus I get 80s cassette playing gimicky cool points. I was going to put the new wheels on straight away but I had realised to two front tyres were a bit more cracked than I thought they were so i'll replace them before I get them swapped over. And they look chuffing ace. Way better than the twists.... The previous guy, who wasn't really 'into' cars like I am had removed the rear wiper, put a bit of tape under the hole and filled the top with silicone. Not my style so found a bung to fit! And then gave the very clean interior a quick clean as it was filled with wheels and pizza the night before The most imminent thing on my list of items to do is engine and gearbox mounts. There is a clunk when you accelerate and when you let off the throttle. Loud enough and solid enough to be felt. It feels a lot like the hydraulic mounts are well worn and letting the engine clunk forwards/backwards in those situations. Otherwise I think it might be the top gearbox mount. Either way I'd like to do them pretty sharpish so I can start enjoying the car a lot more. After that i'll probably do a cambelt to fulfil my ocd as despite being told its been done recently, i'd rather have the piece of mind! But otherwise its a really nice tidy Porsche and i'm looking forward to getting my grubby hands on it to give it some new life

That's a very nice looking car. Love the shape of the 944, I should really have one I guess, just so i can say that I have! Cheers! It is quite nice. Just needs things refreshed. It's done hardly any miles in the last few years so it's dying to have rubber bits and bushes etc replaced. Just giving it a good thrash on the way home helped it out! I'd say it's definitely a car to have on the to do list. Before they get more expensive anyway. Ordered some engine mounts anyway, proper hydraulic ones. They are definitely flattened. So much so that the rad hose going to the thermostat is now rubbing the leg in the engine bay. I'm sure new mounts will lift it/tilt it to the correct angle for no rubbing and no clunking!

Beautiful car mate. My dad's got a 944 too Cheers! It really is a fantastic looking car. I actually quite like the colour and the fact it's not red! Anyway got tyres for the cookie cutters the other day so managed to get them on. Went for 195/65/15 at the front and the rears 215/60/15. The car looks infinitely better so I'm really chuffed! The thing I did next probably won't win me any fans but I put the rear wiper back on. The guy had said to me it was broken and he didn't like it, so he 'bunged' the hole and took it off. Well I took the motor out of the boot and hooked it up to the wires and away it went, but the switch wouldn't turn it on or off. Pulled the switch to find the ball bearing had come out from the end of the spring, meaning there wasn't good pressure on the contacts. Put the ball back in and it's now perfect! The wiper is held on however, by a crappy looking bolt. Not sure if the pin is suppose to stay in the wiper or if you can by a pin with a new blade? I'll get it properly sorted soon enough anyway. Join me on my journey to fix the numpty previous owners' bodgey silly mistakes.

Well I like the wiper and it is always nice when all the switches on your dashboard do something! Might loose the 'modern' wiper blade though! New wheels look spot on too!

Must admit it annoys me when something on the dash doesnt work. Especially when It costs free money to fix So I think my entire dashboard works now. Success! I'll be getting a more period looking thing at some point, I was just using what was stashed in the boot!

Becoming a common sight on my drive. A car in bits. My neighbours are most likely not impressed! Anyway engine mounts done. Not as difficult as it was made out to be online to be honest. I was dreading pulling the drivers side mount out but with enough room it came out easily. For some reason the old drivers side mount was hydraulic and the passenger side was rubber. Both were well worn and floppy. Really makes the car much nicer to drive actually. Accelerating from lower rpm's doesn't shake and rattle your teeth out. Still clunking however. Pretty much diagnosed as needing a new clutch as they are rubber center. The rubber deteriorates and the tabs in the clutch clunk rather than the rubber taking the force. Great idea in principal but the rubber deteriorates before the clutch wears! Tested it out by spinning the driveshaft with my hand and you can move it a good 130 degrees round with a clunk each way! Baws. Ah well. Luck of the draw I suppose! I'll be getting a spring center replacement and do all the necessary seals/bearings at the same time. Epic welcome into the world of porsche ownership haha.

Lovely car! Bummer about the clutch but it'll be nice to know that it's all fresh in there. Cheers! Yeah the price is a bummer too. Porsche tax is ridiculous! Ah well, will be nice to actually be able to enjoy her. I've been driving her very softly at the moment until this is sorted which is a bit boring. Really can't wait to give her a proper drive! New clutch will be a godsend. Motorcycles and Porsches. Super cool and the wheels look great too. Yeah I'm building a cafe racer-esque Harley Sportster and have a C90 as a daily. It's difficult dividing up all the time/money around all 3 haha. I quite fancy a 944, or even a 924 myself, great looking car mate, by the time you get the poundshop wood panelling on it look epic lol Wood panelling will not be going anywhere near this one! Nor anything else from poundland haha! I actually wanted a 924s. I really love how basic they look. Was a toss up between the basic cool of a 924 or wide arches. Those wheels and tyres have transformed it, great work, looks superb Thank you! Wheels make the car I'd say! Adjusted the slack in my front wheel bearings after work today and attempted to find the clunk I was getting over bumps. Turned out the drivers side top shock nut was slightly loose. Tightened it an all sorted. Love fixing things for free Here, have some eye candy...

Clutch and cambelt done at a porsche specialist. Brown pant mode achieved after looking at bill. In all fairness, the previous car I just sold actually made me enough profit to pay for 80% of the bill, so it more of a mere skidmark. Basically I got the clutch done with all associated seals, as well as the cambelt, balance belt and tensioners etc. When I got it back the difference was immediately apparent with no more clunk! hoorah. They'd obviously tightened up the gear linkage as the shifter was a lot less floppy. Still too much for my liking. Ordered a bottom bush for £3.50 and got to work. Copper washer on shaft - Not good for keeping it tight! And part of the reason for having a floppy knob. Yeah, you're seeing that right! Fair difference in the bushes as well... All back together with a steel washer which was the perfect size to make the washer and snap ring extremely tight on the shaft. Excellent! I also cut up some coke can and used this as a shim for the shaft to take up the slop. Result is an absolutely spot on shifter with hardly any play and all gears easy to select. Also tried to fix the electric mirrors as both don't work. Fuse is okay. Ah, adjuster wiring is not okay.. Made an attempt at soldering but I think it was trying to tell me something... Gave up and used bullet connectors just to check if it would work but no dice! Will have to check the dash switch when I have time. Also going to adjust the sunroof limit switches to get them to stop the sunroof at the correct lock position too. But these are jobs for the weekend! I'm really enjoying driving the car though and its very fun. I actually enjoy tinkering with it and making things work or feel better. Its still comfortable and quick and reliable. It also handles, now that i've given it a proper drive, really well for a 30 year old car! Love the challenge of hustling an old car round some nice roads. Had to take the well travelled Carlton home on Saturday as well, and despite sitting for over a month doing nothing it started first time and drove like its always driven, without issue. I love this car. If I didnt have to sell it I wouldn't as its been incredibly good! So comfortable and easy to drive. I'd take it to Rome again in a heartbeat and I know it would make it without issue.

Beautiful! Loves these cars to bits and this one is the business! Thank you! I do try to keep it looking clean but unfortunately where my car sits on the drive it just collects pollen and curse word! I don't really realise how tidy it is until I see another really haha. Even the blokes at the local porsche dealership like it. Just waiting til payday then I can do some worthwhile updates!

Your 944 looks really good. The cookie cutters make a massive difference - I don't like those twist wheels, but the black centre and shiny silver dished rim looks so good. The clutch/cambelt must have stung - still, at least it's done and you know it's not going to need doing again for a good few years. Now you can just look forward to driving it and polishing it (and modding it)! And it could be worse with the parking - my car lives under a tree that has a pigeon nest in it! Cheers Duncan
